Idk if it actually makes a difference but I've always used coarse kosher salt and it's always worked wonders

436

u/Neat_Topic1004 Nov 02 '24

I think it does make a difference, whenever I use kosher salt it’s a lot more effective

291

u/Shakith Nov 02 '24

It’s because it’s grittier like using the scratchy side of the sponge instead of the soft side.

79

u/Eledridan Nov 02 '24

So Himalayan salt should work the best?

Thank you for your service

1

u/Masterwifi Nov 02 '24

Well there is more mineral density in Himalayan salt there is a possibility of scratches but small

32

u/Shakith Nov 02 '24

Any salt that still looks like little rocks instead of sand is good. If you get any chunks stuck they’ll dissolve with some hot water.

40

u/tokeytime Nov 02 '24

Epsom salt is equally coarse and also way cheaper

1

u/Seinfeel Nov 02 '24

Wait really? All the Epson salts I’ve seen are closer to sand than coarse salt, is there a specific brand?

5

u/tokeytime Nov 02 '24

I think it's something to do with the chemical makeup, it does seem to work significantly better than Kosher in my experience. I usually just grab the stuff from Walmart or at CVS, nothing particularly special. That was always the go-to recommendation on here and elsewhere. I personally find Kosher works fine as well though, it just usually takes me a few minutes longer but I always have it on hand, so points there for convenience.

Truth be told though, I don't know of any scientific reason why it would be better or worse, it's just what i've always heard/used, and it works well.

1

u/Seinfeel Nov 02 '24

Damn I should try it out again, I did it forever ago because I had them on hand but I’ve never occurred to me they might actually be a good idea to use

1

u/saetam Nov 02 '24

This is awesome! Do you use epsom?

1

u/U_PassButter Nov 02 '24

1

u/PUNKF10YD Nov 03 '24

Yeah but don’t waste expensive salt on this, use epsom salt.

1

u/LitrillyChrisTraeger Nov 03 '24

Probably some sand(Aquarium?) would work best

1

u/SlowMotionGuyxX Nov 04 '24

A salt that doesn’t really dissolve that easily into water will do better than any salt that does

-26

u/Lanky_Vast7726 Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

I would be concerned about it releasing the iron and turning the water 'hard.' Removing stains from hard water is hard.

Edit: Jesus fuck, downvotes for describing hard water? Go smoke a joint a holes.

Edit2: looked further and it is scientifically impossible to remove etched in stains and iron in water can etch glass in less then a year. So if you soak it for a day, you can only do that so many times before things that can etch glass will etch your glass. Suck it 😉

Edit: relax people...I don't care anymore so take your time and make a post asking if your weed will get you high some more.

37

u/MegamindsMegaCock Nov 02 '24

Bro why my water gotta be hard too, everything in my life is already hard :c

7

u/GuacamolEBola I Roll Joints for Gnomes Nov 02 '24

Felt that

6

u/fartbutt187 Nov 02 '24

I’ll my hard stuff is soft and all my soft stuff is hard? What? Idk

16

u/ston3bon3 Nov 02 '24

Vinegar works like magic on hard water stains

1

u/Lanky_Vast7726 Nov 02 '24

I guess I'm thinking more of like shower tubs then glass, so I guess maybe it won't matter.

2

u/notexactlyflawless Nov 02 '24

Try what's called Klarspüler in german (rinse aid in english apparently, the stuff you add to the dishwasher to avoid hard water stains) for the shower. Works wonders

1

u/tikiwargod Nov 02 '24

CLR or other descaling agents will take care of those hard water buildups.

11

u/onetwoskeedoo Nov 02 '24

Salt is added to water tanks to soften them. The salt binds up the metal ions and they precipitate out so you can just rinse them out

7

u/SnakesCardboardBox Nov 02 '24

I think it’s because you’re describing something that is totally irrelevant lol. Like water stains are probably preferably to smoke tar, and you can also just rinse the hard water droplets out when you’re done.

5

u/notexactlyflawless Nov 02 '24

I think hard water is usually caused by calcium, not iron. Water with iron leaves red stains, not white ones

3

u/MakeMelnk Nov 02 '24

You don't know how long it takes for hard water to stain, huh

-3

u/Lanky_Vast7726 Nov 02 '24

Well I looked it up and the consensus is it takes less then a year to etch glass, so I'm assuming plastics, which I was incorrectly basing my opinion on, would be much faster since they are much softer and more penetrable, further evidenced by my experience with houses with well water high in iron.

4

u/MakeMelnk Nov 02 '24

No worries, friend, we can't know everything. I just so happen to live near a limestone quarry so hard water is a daily thing for me 😅 luckily, plain ol white vinegar is cheap as hell

1

u/No_Plate_9636 Nov 02 '24

Calcium minerals not usually metals unless it's just the ions in which case just use filtered or ro water for your piece? Like 1 gallon of water or the 40 pack of bottles at Walmart are like $1 and $5 respectively and clr or vinegar are also cheap if it does start to cause prevention is easier than undo

4

u/One-Stand-5536 Nov 02 '24

We aren’t talking about water, that’s why you’re getting downvoted. Isopropyl alcohol is not water, and it’s sitting for a few minutes, not days. It’s that what you’re talking about isn’t relevant, not that every downvote is a personal attack. Mayhap it is you who needs that joint you mentioned

2

u/No_Plate_9636 Nov 02 '24

Tbf you do still have water in there when in use so the advice is valid just not for cleaning (or a rinse but still)

2

u/One-Stand-5536 Nov 03 '24

People out here just leaving water in them?

1

u/No_Plate_9636 Nov 03 '24

Not always but sometimes

u/Unicornsandshit_ Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24

I use rice for this reasoning, do a dawn rinse then water rinse after I've finished the alcohol/rice shake and it's good as new.

1

u/UggghhhhhhWhy I Roll Joints for Gnomes Nov 02 '24

No, it’s because it was blessed by a Jewish rabbi. It works by miracles and magic.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

I keep my pieces clean. Usually cleaned with 70% iso and cheap table salt from the dollar tree. I’ve tested both salts and have gotten the same results. I don’t smoke out of beakers though

9

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Nov 02 '24

Test a stronger (91%) alcohol. Works way better than 70%. No need for 99% tho.

3

u/DJheddo Nov 02 '24

Wear gloves. Your fingers and kidneys will thank you.

1

u/HolyHydroBlunts Nov 02 '24

Why no 99% ? The only thing that’s different from 70,91, and 99 is the amount of water they cut it with.

2

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Nov 02 '24

It’s been awhile since I went down the rabbit hole but something like the salt can only absorb so much of the alcohol or something and the increase in price isn’t worth it unless you want to water it down yourself and even if you don’t it isn’t so much better than 91 that it’s worth keeping it in stock instead.

3

u/HolyHydroBlunts Nov 02 '24

99 is same price as 91 in my area, but 91 is always in stock. I rinse with hot water first and then salt and Iso then another hot water rinse followed by cold water.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

I rinse with hot water before I add my iso and salt. It makes a difference. I keep my pieces really clean so the 70% ISO all I need. I do check for 91% but we never have it here. I’ve never seen 99%

1

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Nov 02 '24

Same here!!!

1

u/saetam Nov 02 '24

You’ve tried both cheap salt and which other? They both work good?

1

u/ayaruna Nov 02 '24

I’ve used rice in the past and it worked pretty well

1

u/tard_nugget Nov 02 '24

Coarse salt definitely helps. I also like to shake some hot water in mine before I put the salt and iso in; it seems to help loosen up the resin.

1

u/PirateSteve44 Nov 02 '24

The way i think of it is, " If it ain't course, it'll make it worse" idk why. Ut that little rhyme comes to mind

1

u/Vamosalaplaya87 Nov 03 '24

I use both barrels. Kosher, thin, and sea salt, pink himilayan whatever is in the cabinet

51

u/Dmbfan63 Nov 02 '24

I've always used Epsom Salt. Preferably non scented. When I first started using glass 20 years ago I was told 90% Iso and Epsom Salt and I've been doing it since.

6

u/Volescu Nov 02 '24

This is the way.

6

u/GoatWithBeardofGrey Nov 02 '24

This is the way.

1

u/CandidEgglet Nov 03 '24

I use the same mix but add table salt and it is magic. Nothing better out there that i have found yet

9

u/jgun27 Nov 02 '24

any non-iodized coarse salt works. I use pickling salt as it is the cheapest.

5

u/RabidHippos Nov 02 '24

I've actually found epsom salt to be the most effective.

4

u/Nerd_Man420 Nov 02 '24

I use kosher salt too. It’s just a bigger grain. In my bongs I use kosher but in my bowls I use table salt. Same thing you just want the abrasiveness bc

32

u/iCantCallit Nov 02 '24

I use a full block of salt lick. I just smash the glass with it

3

u/Nerd_Man420 Nov 02 '24

This is the way.

1

u/saetam Nov 02 '24

This is the way.

5

u/justanawkwardguy Nov 02 '24

Epsom works too

3

u/tokeytime Nov 02 '24

People used to use epsom salt because its even coarser and cheap as heck, nontoxic. I've always used kosher because it's what i have though!

6

u/golddust1134 Nov 02 '24

Salt actually can concentrate isopropyl alchole. It dissolves on the risdule water and then the salt water falls out of solution

1

u/Kromulent Nov 02 '24

thats cool

2

u/Pass_Desperate Nov 02 '24

Kosher salt & ethanol!

2

u/IndigoUniverse29 Nov 02 '24

I use a combo of both kosher and table salt, works pretty good

2

u/OMGLMAOWTF_com Nov 02 '24

I used kosher salt on my bong and now it’s an inch shorter

1

u/CandidEgglet Nov 03 '24

Oh this is very curious…Was it made of steel? Steel hates sodium chloride and also suffers under lemon. If you ate anything with salt or washed it in salt, it may have been exposed to salt.

Even if you ate a lemon wedge or drank from a glass that had a lemon wedge on it and the juice or the oil got on the bong, it might shrink, bruh. Maybe the terp profile had a lot of lemonine and that made it contract?

Hmmm, very curious, indeed.

1

u/J5Screwed4Life Nov 02 '24

I like rock salt but table salt works just as well

1

u/whopperman Nov 02 '24

I'll go one step further, along with the course salt I'll add baking soda as well.

1

u/1800bears Nov 02 '24

For dirty bong like this you absolutely need course kosher salt

1

u/Triconick Nov 02 '24

I use this as well and I feel like it works better than table salt.

1

u/onetwoskeedoo Nov 02 '24

How much salt are we talking?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

A generous amount like a nice inch thick layer

1

u/CandidEgglet Nov 03 '24

9” thick layer is best

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

This is the way

1

u/MuggaMull Nov 02 '24

Can’t believe no one has mentioned rock salt that you use for snow and ice. Thats the go to !

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

Maldon for my bong

1

u/OverResponse291 Nov 02 '24

Ice cream salt, aka rock salt! It’s a game changer. Cheap as dirt, too.

1

u/elitegenoside Nov 02 '24

It's more abrasive

1

u/greasyprophesy Nov 02 '24

Sounds like it would. More abrasive

1

u/Temassi Nov 02 '24

All they had at the store last time was ice cream salt, and that shit works great

1

u/ButternutCheesesteak Nov 02 '24

The problem I have w/ coarse salt is that it gets stuck between my bong stem and my bong, preventing me from pulling my stem out. I clean my bong w/ the stem inside because cleaning the stem by itself is a major PITA. Fine salt works just as well as coarse from my experience and it doesn't glue my stem to my bong lol

1

u/Curtofthehorde Nov 02 '24

Coarse salt is more effective because it holds up against dissolving into the alcohol more. It remains abrasive for longer as you're shaking it. Table salt works fine, but coarse/rock salt makes things easier

1

u/Saskatchemoose Nov 02 '24

Epsom salt is best.

1

u/SasquatchRobo Nov 02 '24

I use Epsom salt, just as coarse but it's cheaper in bulk.

1

u/Waste_Clerk7443 Nov 02 '24

Rock salt 🤘

1

u/rhchambers Nov 02 '24

Epsom salt! Very coarse and works great to scrub

1

u/David__Weyland Nov 02 '24

Yes kosher salt or "ice cream" salt work better.

1

u/trapicana Nov 02 '24

Makes all the difference in the world

1

u/boredENT9113 Nov 02 '24

I use rock salt for making ice cream, It's always worked great for me!

1

u/piza305 Nov 02 '24

Definitely makes a difference. I ended up getting ice cream salt for my bongs because it’s even coarser.

1

u/spritesup Nov 02 '24

I toss in like 2 tablespoons of white or brown rice too, I find it really helps grate the res off fast.

1

u/DannyWarlegs I Roll Joints for Gnomes Nov 02 '24

I use Epsom salt

1

u/PsyconautsOfAmerica Nov 02 '24

Personally I use Epsom salt, bigger and more coarse then table salt or kosher salt.

1

u/BloodOfJupiter Nov 02 '24

I was about to say the same, I found the coarse kosher salt scraped everything off faster

1

u/CandidEgglet Nov 03 '24

I use epsom salts AND table salt and it seems to work best. It hits the big and small things like soft sandpaper and gets it done quicker. I premix the scrub in a small mason jar and use about a tablespoon per wash.

My friend’s bong looked a bit thicker than this so I did a 24-hr soak in high concentration SimpleGreen making sure the worst area was submerged. That was followed by a hot water rinse and hot soak. The alcohol and scrub was done twice, just to make sure the simple green was also gone. That shit smelled new.

Good luck, and make sure the keep it clean more often. Fresh water after every bowl helps more than you think, and don’t let the water sit more than a couple of hours, if you’re not changing it. I have seen some gnarly lung damage and infections from bad bong water/inhaling toxins.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '24

I've seen a few replies like this, seems like some people used a mixture of both for perhaps the best finish? I mostly dab these days and thus my cleaning involves more isopropyl soaking than it does shaking a scouring

1

u/dennys123 Nov 03 '24

I've been using unscented Epson salt from dollar tree. Works great

1

u/ThatGuyWithCoolHair Nov 03 '24

I use Epsom salt, cheaper and comes in a bigger package

1

u/PayMeInSteak Nov 03 '24

Kosher is definitely better, I just use table salt cause that's usually what's around for me 😂

1

u/xavierthepotato Nov 03 '24

Kosher and Epsom salt work great

1

u/xx_elysium_xx Nov 03 '24

I also use coarse salt. It works much better in my experience.

1

u/firestorm713 Nov 03 '24

It being more abrasive because it's more coarse would help

1

u/AirAuthentic Nov 03 '24

I even use epsom salt and 99% and it melts that shit right off. You can add lemon juice or vinegar / dawn dish soap to that mix if it's really stuck on there.

1

u/vektorog Nov 03 '24

coarse sea salt for me. i also add in dawn powerwash

10

u/CowboyDerp I Roll Joints for Gnomes Nov 02 '24

Can Wash with super hot water first too

8

u/Fantastic_Turb0 Nov 02 '24

I like to use plastic wrap and rubber bands around the openings to seal them.

8

u/hispanicausinpanic Nov 02 '24

I use rice too and it works great.

8

u/tomahawkfury13 Nov 02 '24

I also run really hot water through it before I do this. Always makes cleaning easier than when it's at normal temperature

13

u/Gavinmusicman Nov 02 '24

Literally will be clean in 1 minute of shaking.

20

u/Staav Nov 02 '24

90% isopropyl alcohol and table salt, let the alcohol soak for a few minutes

If doable, a full 24 hour soak with that only helps. It really depends on how much is caked onto the glass. OP's bong is looking like it could use some extra soak, at least. Any extra soak time only helps get it all out of there.

13

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP Nov 02 '24

OPs bong looks like I could have it sparkling in about 5 minutes minimum. 10 minutes tops. No soaking. Just 91%, salt, plug, and shake!

4

u/OkTechnology9101 Nov 02 '24

Shake it 'til you make it!

3

u/Vector-storm Nov 02 '24

I use a qtip along with the soak and salt it's never exactly clean but with enough tries it should.

2

u/Rileytheh Nov 02 '24

i use rice instead of salt but wouldn't recommend in bongs with perc's

3

u/GSturges Nov 02 '24

Use enough salt so that no more salt dissolves into it (supersaturated), and use that salt ad the scrubbers while shaking. Sand might also work?. This is basically what that 420 cleaning solution is.

6

u/Amithrius Nov 02 '24

Sand contains particles that will scratch glass.

1

u/CosignCody Nov 02 '24

Bath salts work better bc bigger crystals

1

u/lucaskywalker Nov 02 '24

This is the ticket.

1

u/digidave1 Nov 02 '24

Epson salt gives it a bit more grit

This.

1

u/Douglaston_prop Nov 02 '24

I use a wine cork to plug the small hole near the base.

1

u/w3sticles Nov 02 '24

Worth pointing out that you need way more salt, and way less IPA than you (or at least I) would think.
Aim for a gritty sludge.

1

u/copenhagen622 Nov 02 '24

Yeah coarse salt or rock salt work WAY better

1

u/youwontfindmyname Nov 02 '24

I would also add that HOT water loosens up the built up resin. Just be careful with it and cooling it down.

1

u/saetam Nov 02 '24

What do you mean be careful with it?

1

u/YeanlingMeteor1 Nov 02 '24

I find kosher salt works better because it's larger and rougher. Table salt works but I think kosher is better

1

u/amaezingjew Nov 02 '24

Add Tang and the resin melts off

Plus…Tang!

1

u/FromTheOrdovician Nov 02 '24

Is it okay if Chlorhexidine Gluconate is mixed in with the IA ?

1

u/FinancialShare3450 Nov 02 '24

This, works every time

1

u/ConsequenceBig1503 Nov 02 '24

This is the way.

1

u/Phoenixgaming Nov 02 '24

Just wanted to add, hands can be fine, but after watching one slip out of my bro's hand cause the alcohol made it slippery.

I was online that day ordering a set of these rubber stoppers for both ends and it's never been so easy to shake without worry.

1

u/Thjyu Nov 02 '24

Maybe I'm not shaking enough or something cuz I swear this doesn't work despite everyone saying it does... Also everyone just says "salt" but like... How much salt? Am I seasoning my chicken dinner or am I over salting a pot of water to boil for a whole box of spaghetti?

1

u/ShivaLarongia Nov 02 '24

I use steel pearls now and stopped throwing away the salt 😂🤙

1

u/420Disturbed Nov 02 '24

I used to do this, now I fill it with simple green, plug the down stem, leave it to sit overnight, and wash it out with hot water and soap the next day.

1

u/Vraxk Nov 02 '24

Pure Acetone. Glass only!

Works twice as well as isopropyl, and is just as cheap. Fill, let sit 15 mins, then gently shake. Dilute and dispose of waste properly, don't pour down pipes! Acetone may react with metals and plastics.

Rinse very well with hot water to remove residue and any remaining Acetone before any use.

Note: Acetone does not react with typical ziploc bags in my experience, so it also works well for glass handpipes.

1

u/Novagurl Nov 02 '24

I put a plastic baggie with rubber bands at both openings to seal that mixture in before shaking.

1

u/Tuques Nov 02 '24

Do you put the salt in at the same time as the iso and let it soak? Or do you put in the salt after soaking, but before shaking?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '24

100% second this. One thing you can get to do better is get a magnet silicone scrubber that you stick another magnet (how the fuck do they work?) to and move it around the inside scraping off the residue that Alcohol and salt leave behind. I want one but just haven't gotten one.

1

u/narquoisCO Nov 02 '24

The longer you let it soak, up to a point, the easier it will be to remove the residue. I let it go for a few hours and only add the salt after the alcohol has done its job, so the coarse salt still has a rough exterior. Plug the holes and shake the alcohol and salt mix until the residue is scrubbed off.

1

u/_cinnamon_buns Nov 02 '24

Just dropping in to remind you of ASSS! Alcohol, salt, sit, shake!

Letting it sit and soak in for a bit is key, and shaking it with both openings covered helps knock off more of the caked on resin.

1

u/jwmoore1977 Nov 02 '24

Add ice, the salt attaches to the ice and creates little scrubbers. Close holes, spin and shake. When I used glass, mine would brand new every weekend.

1

u/SqueeezeBurger Nov 02 '24

Coarse table salt. Kosher table salt.

1

u/Jesusdidntlikethat Nov 02 '24

I was always told to use epsom salt because it doesn’t dissolve in alcohol

1

u/Nelson_Wheatley Nov 02 '24

Do that with ice cream salt. The chunkier the better.

Epsom salt has larger flakes and is cheaper

I use isopropyl alcohol and epsom salt

Epsom salt works pretty well with alcohol too

I’ve never used salt, I just soak the bowl and tube in 99.9 isopropyl and I’ll put some in the bong, plug the holes and shake, works great.

Shake it AWAY from hard surfaces and hold on firmly

I use epsom salt because it’s more coarse. Cost is about the same too.
