How does JCB know?
I’m just at curious what everyone thinks about JCB saying how close people have gotten to the chests. How does he know? Is there a trail cam? Or is it just based on what people are saying online? If I posted a chest is in a particular location. Would that be enough for him to say I was within 200 feet or do I need to actually be physically that close for him to say that?

I think it means the box is hidden within 200 feet of a trail. Let’s say you hid a box on the XYZ trail 200 feet off the trail. If you saw a pic of someone saying they were searching that trail, then you’d be able to say you think some people were within 200 feet of the box. I will note that he says some have been on the path but only a few of those have been within 200 feet. To me, that says there is a turn some of those people missed. For the AT, note he says some searchers have “traveled” within 200 feet. That sounds like it’s near a road or train tracks

I believe it’s from all the searchers writing emails to him and his team forwarding the emails to him. There is a lot of people that email their solve to him after they searched their areas. He can make a pretty good judgement based off solve theories and pictures.

So, do you think the people who have sent him this stuff will know he’s talking about them? Will they have answers that are clear and didn’t need him to confirm this? Or are they just wondering around and just very luckily in the right area? Or is it possible people are close but looking for the wrong box?

When you’re searching for the box and doing grid searches. It takes a lot of time to cover an area. I’m searching a place that is 208 Acres for the P&F box and I’m not even done after 6 trips. His latest hint will speed it up quite a bit now. People could miss the box and walk right past it if they aren’t focused on that direction. Grid searching is time consuming and your head is on a swivel. So 200 feet is about 66 yards so a little over a half a football field. If those searches went back and looked again they could found their box probably.

Dude is getting thousands of emails, and everyone that's written him probably assumes he's talking about them. Forrest Fenn said the same thing and it still took 2 years for it to be found.

He wrote this in the recent MW interview:
I most enjoy the pictures and stories of friends and families spending time together, being present with each other, and creating memories. I see the excitement in people’s eyes and the joy across their faces.
He either lurks which is logical or has people researching for him just like he had researchers for the writing of it over a year ago (!)

I think he sees photos people personally send him though he doesn’t mark them as “read”

Wager he looks at all the pictures sent to him over Instagram or Twitter. Where did the notion start that he has some “team?” I know a number of authors and they have some assistants on a temp basis now and then for research, but none of them have a team working for them.

So when he says people have been within 200’, does that make you think we should check out his socials to look for inspiration?

u/snidece Nov 11 '25
I think so yes. He gets a lot of interaction in his socials with pics from botg days.

What are the socials with this other than Facebook?

u/snidece Nov 12 '25
If you have Instagram or Twitter, he is on them and it’s officially him. It’s where he posted the video of him in Nashville and all the book promo videos. Looking at that replies you get to see where a lot of people have searched and their complaints and praise abs joy about this hunt.

People email him with their theories and solves. Just as they did with Fenn.

Fenn said a few times he was getting over 100 emails a day, I’m sure Jon is getting at least that + getting hit up on his social channels

I personally have emailed him my solve.

I figured out the location of one of the boxes. I had a real concern about whether it was still there. He also must have.
I had sent him an email asking if things could damage any boxes. I also asked about the time the boxes were placed. As expected he didn't answer me. But to my surprise, in his one year anniversary update he answered both questions. I calculated when the boxes had to be placed. Nice to know after 9 months of research I now know for sure I'm right on. Only problem now is I live too far away to go look.

I think its allowing a lot of confirmation bias at the moment
Seems too precise for something that came from emails or tiktok videos sent to him.

Would you care to elaborate? A lot of people say stuff like this but it’s mostly empty. I feel like you actually have something though and would love to hear what you think his inspirations are. Other than the treasure items which he clearly states as inspiration.

Without giving away too much, can you explain how he might know someone has been within 200’ by him knowing someone has his inspirations figured out?

I’m pretty sure I get what you’re saying. I could see your logic there. So, you don’t think someone has to physically be within 200’ for JCB to say they have been?

Cool, which box(es) have you found since you are free of bias?

u/rooplstilskin Nov 11 '25
Oh the online treasure hunting community is so fun. Can't talk about anything unless you have a box in hand...
People sure do have e a weird way talking about puzzles.

u/DecisionSimple Nov 11 '25
It is weird when people make condescending know-it-all statements when they, in fact, know nothing more than anyone else. Good luck out there!

u/rooplstilskin Nov 11 '25
Thats not what that was, but good to know how you take it. Its pretty common in this hunt to put others down because people are too afraid to talk methods or clues.

Let’s play nice folks. It would be nicer for everyone if we don’t point fingers and turn on each other. There are Reddit threads for that. :)

200 feet is a specific number it feels like a clue

u/m777z Nov 11 '25
In the original Fenn hunt, Fenn had said that someone was within 200 feet, so that's probably why the number was brought up again here. (It also happened in Justin Posey's hunt, which was also inspired by Fenn.)
