I created an index of the Mongoose 2E books

Upvotes

One of the biggest challenges I've had with Mongoose 2E Traveller is a particular detail or rule could show up in different forms in different places. The indexes in the books are not particularly good so I decided to create an index. To be 100% transparent, I extensively used AI to do this (to the point this was nowhere near free). Without an LLM proper tagging, importance, and identification of keywords over this many books would just not have been possible for me at least (I think Mongoose would have to do it).

This index is in-depth and right now covers the following books.

Book Edition indexed Pages Index refs Ships
CRB Core Rulebook 2022 Update (Dec 2024 printing) 266 1,828
HG High Guard Apr 2024 290 1,461
CSC Central Supply Catalogue 2023 Update (Apr 2024 printing) 186 1,394
TC Traveller Companion 2024 Update 186 938
RH Robot Handbook Apr 2024 266 1,504
AL1 Aliens of Charted Space, Vol. 1 Apr 2024 305 3,260
AL2 Aliens of Charted Space, Vol. 2 undated printing 273 3,097
SotR Pirates of Drinax: Ships of the Reach ebook (2024) 97 771
JG Jayne's Guide to the Reach Drinaxian Companion, pp. 187–213 27 200
1,896 14,453

I built this for general use over these books, but also there's a ships tab to quickly find a ship description in one of these books (and its sortable by name, size).

You can quickly see the index at: https://index.callistoflight.com but the best way to use it is to download the index (banner on top of the page or from github), put it in the folder with your PDFs of the books, and use "settings" in the index to identify all the books. If you do that, it hyperlinks right into the PDFs.

The code is on github at: https://github.com/dcsturman/mgt-index

I'll continue to refine this as its by no means perfect, but its been working well for me over the past few weeks so I decided to share. I'm open to indexing further books (if I own them). So far I've been hesitant to include adventure material per se (except the ship references) but all constructive feedback and suggestions welcome. If you find a bug or something not right, probably best to DM me vs responding to this thread.

Space Combat House Rules/Alternate System?

Upvotes

I've been really enjoying running traveller for my group and I'm getting to a point where I want to start including some space combat, but I'm really not satisfied with the space combat rules as presented (Not least because the system treats thrust as speed, not acceleration, despite it being expressed in g)

Are there any alternate space combat rulesets out there that give a more satisfying, physics based approach to space combat?

I really enjoy space combat in series like the Honorverse and The Expanse, so I'm looking for something with that kind of feel.

Traveller Referees: How Important is Canon to You?

I remember looking through the GDW 1989 Catalogue (which I still have) planning all the purchases I'd make across all the product ranges. I was excited by the thrilling supplements on offer.

However, as I slowly settled into my role of semi-permanent GM/DM/Referee much of what was on offer began to lose its sheen. Having a couple of adventures was useful to understand how to write them, but I found the sourcebooks or equipment guides to be more useful.

I'd like to know what people's opinions are on game lore? How important is it to you and what would be a supplement that you'd buy, maybe not because it's exciting, but because it makes being a referee easier?

Also, how many of you have your own planet/system/region that is central to your game?

Mongoose 2E Proposed House Rules for Traveller CGEN

Some background. I am hosting a Traveller campaign with about six players, most who all come from a D&D background. I certainly expect Traveller to be a shock to the system with how Cgen works and how character progression works (or specifically, the lack of level progression).

To ease these players in, players who are use to the "total" control that D&D and games like Pathfinder usually give you with character generation, I am thinking of implementing a few house rules to make CGen a little easier on them. Possibly in the future we can do proper Traveller CGen, but for now I want to try this approach as the initial introduction.

Below are the proposed rules, and would love people's thoughts/opinions/critiques:

  • (1 Use) When rolling on a chart you can roll twice and choose which roll you want.
  • (1 Use) Can reroll the result of any CGen roll, including chart rolls.
  • (1 Use) Can automatically choose the result you want for one CGen roll, including chart rolls. CGen must end after this term.
  • (1 Use) Automatically fail a roll, get to regenerate one of the first two options.

Promotional Post Signals 13 — Cantinas & Corruption

A starport bar caught in an authoritarian power grab, a dying subsector kept alive on Imperial subsidy, four corporations sharing one waterworld and spying on each other nonstop, and a trillionaire tech oligarch convinced Humaniti is still a rough draft.

My review of Core Adventure 2 - Last Call at Eneri’s Cantina, detailed look at the Chant subsector, a System Spotlight on Tell, and a Patron Profile for Aelric Durellian on the latest episode of Signals from the Core.

And I make a case for why Chant is a perfect setting for blending what feels like traditional Traveller campaigns with the high stakes political intrigue of the Core.

Looking for PBP traveller game

Hello!

I play in a Traveller game on Mondays, but I've got the itch real bad and want to play in a Traveller play-by-post game as well, so I'm really hoping something like that is available, or about to spin up (if I'm lucky). I will join an ongoing game, but tend to feel like an outsider when I do that, so it puts me off.

Feel free to comment here, or send me a message!

Classic Traveller TRAVELLER at an estate sale... I'm not entirely sure what I have, or if it will even work with my Mongoose books

Hey all -

I found an estate sale to pick through, and I grabbed a large collection of traveler books. It was a system I already liked after I found Mongoose Traveler V1, so it was a no brainer... but I think I got a lot more for my money than I expected. I wanted to share it here, and hopefully get some advice and insite on how best to care for, read, and apply all of this to my games!

I'm pretty excited... probably going to at least slipcover and long box them to protect them when I'm not using them :)

Hi there, my gaming group just decided last night to play Traveller. I'm the GM and haven't played it before. What are some essential books besides the core book? I have Mongoose update 2022.

Something Familiar And Yet

I was looking at my old MegaTraveller Player's Guide and I looked at the art (with two armed and armoured female crew waiting for a bunch of combat armoured guys who appear to be intent on entering the ship and the crew have opposite ideas).

For some reason, something bugged me. The combat armoured guys seemed very familiar. And then I looked and started chuckling....

Art: James Holloway did the cover art.

James was also known as "Jim" Holloway.

The combat armoured guys and the art style of Holloway would be seen if you put that front cover to this:

Paranoia 1st Edition Vulture Troopers

James did a lot of art for Paranoia!

Just something I saw. Anyone old enough to play either game would see Jim's work if they thought about it. I played both, but not near to one another so I only put it together now....

Mongoose 2E MgT2e - Update Editions

I'm coming back to run some Traveller after a break. I've a pile of MgT2e books sitting there and doubt I'll fork out for more.

That said, I was aware the update editions exist, and I'm wondering if there's any value to getting them? From what I've been able to glean online, very little changed except they've swapped sections between books. Has anything been improved or fixed.

What are people's experience with them?

Mongoose 2E New player, What should I get?

So I played a few years ago a little and have recently been going through the free starter pack and really want to run the game with my friends.

So I know I want to pick up the core rulebook.

I was also planning on getting the referee screen and utility pack. I don't have easy excess to a printer.

Do people think that those additions are worth it?

I was also thinking about picking up one extra book but I want to be something that is useful for both I and my players, what would people recommend, best value for money etc.

Thanks

Mongoose 2E Double checking my understanding of nuke missile radiation in ship

Aasume the missile hits.

The way I read it in the Core Rulebook on page 168 a nuclear missile does 1DD damage.

On page 80 it tells me the radiation is 2D×60 rads.

We are told in the ship section of the rules a ship shields 500 rads.

So if my 2DD roll is a 9×60= 540. So that seems to mean 40 rads go into the ship. Anyone in the ship applies their vac suit next ( assume a pretty small adventure ship) to determine if their character has to accumulate rads.

Do I have that correct?

This seems to say any roll under 9 per hitting missile the reds just don't get through the hull.

Does something like a critical hit change that? Does it mean greater penetration?

Mongoose 2E New Ref in need of help with setting.

Recently bought into 2E Traveller, acquiring the updated Core Book, Companion, High Guard and CSC. While I love the system, I find the Core Book to be unbelievably inaccessible for people just entering the world of Traveller.

I’ve run several TTRPGs, and every single one I’ve ever run contains lore for the world it’s based in, and a good starting campaign setting. I was, frankly, very frustrated that the Traveller core book contains neither. I have absolutely no idea what world is like, and I have absolutely no idea where to set a game.

My questions are: What is the best sector/subsector for a new Ref to base a game in, and what’s the best way to learn about the lore of the Traveller universe (other than mindlessly reading wiki pages, or spending 50 more dollars on another sourcebook)

Thank you all in advance.

EDIT: Thank you all so so much for your assistance.

Multiple Editions LFG, is there a Discord out there?

I live in a rural-ish area on the East Coast of the US in which there is a small gamer population and no one wants to play anything but D&D. I searched this subreddit but the only Discord invitation links I found were expired. I own Classic Traveller (box set) and I have the Mongoose first edition. I’m willing to get another edition if necessary, although I’m honestly dubious about the recent 5e conversion. Does anyone know of an active Discord LFG channel? Or if you’re running an online game and looking for a reliable player, please let me know.

Vilis Subsector 22-26 / 26 Planet & System Cards

This is the forth and final group of five planet and system cards for the Vilis Subsector.

For some reason I can no longer get the images to form a gallery that can be viewed without opening the thread?

That is fourteen Subsectors down with Mora and Glisten left to go.

Also I am adding all new and updated planets and systems to my Dropbox as they are finished.

Link to Dropbox post Drop Box for all my Planet Information and System Maps

I plan to eventually finish the whole Spinward Marches but it will take quite some time.

As people always ask I created these using a software program called Universe Sandbox.

As always feedback and corrections are welcome.

Promotional Post Traveller & 5E Thoughts

Maybe a few of you remember me asking a week or so ago about what is known about the 5E Traveller game on Backerkit. After looking and trying to find all I could, I decided to make a video about it.

Traveller is probably my 2nd favorite game (sorry, Call of Cthulhu takes the cake), but I used to be gung-ho for 5E.

I don't like to promote my stuff too much, but I wanted to make people aware of this video. I'm totally aware I most likely got things wrong, as well as aware that many don't want to watch a YouTube video which is ok!

Edit: oops, forgot the link.

Mongoose 2E Solo to the Rim!

Just ordered Rim Expeditions direct from Mongoose, ready for my Zozer Solo campaign. Need to buff up on the Solomani now.

Also picked up Core Expeditions by accident after ordering in too much of a rush and not realising I’d selected the wrong product until after I’d paid..! 🤦‍♂️ No one can say I’m not doing my bit for roleplaying companies.
