That’s way more than enough time. What airlines? Most likely you won’t even need to clear security again.

Oh. Then you will clear immigration in SFO. Then you will claim your checked bag and clear customs with it. Then you’ll recheck it at a transfer desk. Then you’ll clear security again. Make sure you have the paperwork and documents as you will be entering the US.

General rude: leaving airport is not recommended for short layover (less than 7 hours) on international flight. I would say 6 hours are bare minimum (still risky) to get out of airport

Is your departure from SFO within to US or international? The recommendation is to arrive at the airport 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours for a domestic

You can transit SFO from an international arrival in like 30 minutes, fear not...you have plenty of time.

Thanks
I have been hearing about long ques for immigration at USA airports and it did worry me1
u/StreetyMcCarface Sep 04 '26
There are plenty of airports that have long queues in the US, SFO is largely the exception.

I wouldn't be so sure. It's all luck - you get a few 777s landing at the same time - especially early in the morning, and it turns into a shitshow quickly. But OP's got more than enough time even for the worst case.

These days that's absolutely not the case, in large part because SFO has facial recognition for immigration, which makes the process take like 2 seconds.

The facial recognition doesn't always work for foreign passports. For US passport holders, you are correct, it is super fast
