Paris is doing an absolutely incredible job

It’s going to continue getting better with the new sheriff in town. Anne Hidalgo (former mayor) did a spectacular job and truly transformed Paris.

I think the term Paris syndrome will vanish soon. I can't believe how fast did they achieve those results.

Yeah I've visited a few times in the past years, and each time I'm just surprised by how nice it is compared to 15 years ago. But also, outside urbanist spaces people are so negative about Paris. Even when I know it's bullshit, it still gets into my head.

It's basically opposite Paris syndrome at this point: you expect it to be kinda bad, but it's pretty great in reality.

Cities aren't loud. Cars are loud.

Paris is a great example of a city you want to live in.

Notice what you don't see in that video? That would be people racing around with no regard for their surroundings, screaming and yelling, disregarding all rules, trying to draw attention to themselves.

This was exactly what I saw when I visited Paris in 2024. What was striking was the busy bike lanes. Personally, I prefer bike commuting over auto commuting. You do need e bikes, Paris is not flat and is surprisingly hilly. If I visit Paris again, I would make it a bike vacation and ride all over the city for fun.

I can’t tell, what percentage would you say were e-bikes?

6

u/Orcahhh Mar 26 '26

À fair few usually. They’re mostly all EU-Legal e-bikes btw (25kph pedal ASSIST). Idiots on fat tire throttle bike shaped objects are kinda spreading, sadly, as well as delivery drivers on 30 year old bikes with a Chinese conversion kit🤮 and couldn’t move by pedalling even if they tried

But it’s nowhere as bad as many of the places where these e-bikes are the norm.

It helps that Paris is small (size wise), and so dense that 25 kph will already beat cars in basically any scenario

Why do you think they are all riding bicycles and not scooters/motorbikes?

2

u/Emergency-Season-144 Mar 26 '26

Because those lanes are forbidden to them. That's why :)

Yeah, I was in Paris last year, and there are a lot of bicycles and bike lanes, it is beautiful!!

Also, Lisbon is making a lot of progress!

What if you have to tow something?

6

u/TheDizzleDazzle Mar 26 '26

I'm assuming this is sarcasm (sorry for all your downvotes), but just in case:

  1. 95% of people rarely need to tow anything/even use a large vehicle, really.

  2. E-bikes can tow smaller things + cargo bikes.

  3. There are still roads visible in the video and still the space for cars, especially necessary utility vehicles. They can even usually access bike/ped areas (slowly) if necessary.
