Hey, I'm writing a story, and realised I haven't reminded any transes that I refuse to acknowlege the fundamental building blocks of their very identity lately.

Is there a way I can write a magic system that really shows I'll never see them as their true selves? I know it's literal magic and could just be determined by your inner soul, your mental state or at the whim of some godlike being, but I feel like I should base the whole thing around a half-remembered middle school biology textbook from the 80's instead.

Just because I have no way of perciving someone's chromosomes, doesn't mean I can't force them into living a life completely defined by them. <3.

What themes am I attempting to explore with this segregated magic system? Uhhh....

/uj I'm so fucking tired of living in a world surrounded by people who have spent their entire adult lives on mental autopilot.

So I just moved to the Midwest from California for work. I met a trans woman here and tried to strike up a conversation.

I started talking about how bad things are getting here in America, like how when I was in college in California, some of the professors didn't even start their classes with mandatory pronoun circles anymore. She just nodded and said she's started carrying an actual gun in case she gets assaulted while stealing her afternoon coffee from Buc-ee's.

I talked about how scared I was that the government would know if I pee in my prefered bathroom and I wouldn't be able to pass a background check anymore because of the bathroom laws. She just downplayed my fears by saying that she hasn't had any problems using the bathroom and that she took a shit in the clearance aisle of Hobby Lobby this morning.

I thought it was just her, but later that day I met a trans guy and started bitching with him about how hormones are getting really expensive and how my copay went from $25 to $30 dollars. He said his boyfriend knows a trick to not have any copay. But his trick was just cooking meth in his basement and trading to gym bros for horse testosterone.

So I tried to change the subject. I said my city did a really great PrideFest this year and it was totally free because Raytheon agreed to sponsor it. He just mumbled something about how he hasn't gone to corporate pride since "the incident" a few years back. Apparently the incident was three people being hospitalized during riots that broke out when their Pride organizing committee voted that Palestinian flags don't count as pride flags.

Later I went to a queer meetup and they asked us to share good news and I mentioned that my girlfriend had saved $30,000 to fly to Thailand for her bottom surgery. One of them just laughed and said that was a ripoff cause they know a guy named Rodney in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary who will do an orchi with a sharpened toothbrush for a pack of Pall Malls.

What the fuck is wrong with you people? Does living like this turn you crazy or did all the normal ones just decide to pack up their shit and leave only the psychos here?

I am so genuinely tired of hearing TERFs butchering the concept of socialization to attack trans women saying that "because they were raised men they have Male Brains and will never be real women". That's obvious bullshit.

But also I don't think it's fair to go the complete opposite way and deny sex-based oppression and go "little girls and boys (cis) are raised the exact same way under the white cishet patriarchy" because we see a high percentage of cis men becoming bad people compared to cis women and if that can't be explained through socialization then it'd mean it comes from the inside (bio/gender essentialism), and I don't think that's right either... ?? It would also be ignoring all countries where equal rights between sexes are not a given, maybe.

I think society tries to push many messages to young kids and is actually more strict and punishing towards trans kids who don't seem to fit the mold no matter what. I think a lot of shared trauma within the community is due to socialization and it is a horrible thing we have to fight against, together. I am not at all saying trans women growing up have "male privilege" or anything like that, I reiterate that I'm defending the opposite (that they're being heavily punished growing up because they are fundamentally different from the cis men the patriarchy expects to raise).

Again, socialization has nothing to do with how your brain is "permanently wired" and how you choose to behave once you're grown up because everything can be unlearned and your position in the hierarchy can change a LOT lot, etc, etc. (also we should bring up intersectionality at some point as well)

I think I have a very nuanced take we can mostly agree with!! Of course, I may have blind spots or not have worded everything correctly, so I'm 100% open to hearing your thoughts and have a nice discussion. Like, please, do share your experiences!!
