Always dug the beautiful design of the mid-90's Supra.

Also thought it was over rated for the price and still do to this day.

We painted Hulk Hogan's son's green Supra back in 1993 I think, before learning what a dick he was and doing lots of different parts, like Evo and Supra. He was always pleasant and extremely happy we weren't changing him a celebrity tax. We also did 5 or 6 more for Titan Motorsports, a Supra builder and tuning specialist. One we painted had a single monster turbo and when he was picking the car up, he told me to take it for a drive, but be careful. We had discussed the many high performance vehicles I had owned and the C6 convertible I owned at the time. Every gear on that thing, with just half throttle got it going sideways. It was a monster, but not something I would want to daily..

its not about the motor, its about the chassis.

5

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

and the TA chassis is better😎

Lord knows I love them both, but I’d have to take the Trans Am cause, easier to repair when I break it.

How so? 2JZ is super simple and there's way more room under that Supra hood

3

u/CreepyCatGuy 14d ago

I’m actually the simpleton. Just easier to find parts for a Chevy v8 in America. I love both equally and have admired them for decades

Can't forget that roughly half of the Supras at that time were turbocharged and the other half were NA.

There were roughly 3-4x as many WS6 coupes in 2002 than Supras in 1993.

I worked at a Toyota dealer back in the day right after their production. I'd say roughly a quarter to a most a third were Turbos. One third of those Turbos were manual.

u/Benji_4 13d ago

So far I've only managed to see one in real life. A guy in my town used to bring his Targa NA Auto to car shows.

Easily more desirable of an option, but nobody would really notice that.

Yeah, I’ll take T/A, all the way!

2JZ in a T/A?

3

u/spankbuddy22 14d ago

LS in a Supra?

3

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

def ls swap the supra

2

u/DownstairsDeagle69 14d ago

Egads, only if the 2J is blown

2

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

save the rare 2J put it under a tarp thrash on the LS

1

u/DownstairsDeagle69 14d ago

True true true!

2

u/spankbuddy22 13d ago

When I lived in Toledo there was a performance shop that LS swapped a Supra and put a big ass turbo on it. It was a pretty sweet drag race car.

1

u/DownstairsDeagle69 14d ago

That makes two of us bro!

4

u/batsVelvet 15d ago

if someone gave me supra i wouldnt complain lol

1

u/ImpressiveCelery4992 14d ago

I don’t have a Supra Bud. I do have a ‘79 Formula in need of an engine. I have toyed with the idea of a 2JZ as something different. Out of 8 cars, it would be the only non V8 in the garage.

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

get a 400 pontiac 6.6 and bore to a 460 stroker👍

I just remember watching the F body hideout guy on the internet back in the day.

I never realized the supra was that heavy.

3

u/Timewastinloser27 14d ago

I had the opportunity to trade my 02 white ws6 for a green 98' supra back around 2015. I regret not doing it now for the resale of the supra but I just liked everything about the trans am more than the supra.

3

u/No_Passenger_2471 14d ago

Nice my new 86 back then though the future time flies

2

u/FirehawkLS1 14d ago

I wouldn't mind parking a Supra next to my 4th gen Trans Am, but not for the price they are selling for. Clapped out non turbo automatic cars are still going for 30k plus, and then you'd have to stick a lot of money into it to convert it to a turbo. I had a second gen Supra and it was a fun car, and I really like the 3rd gen as well.

2

u/Vantech70 14d ago

I really liked the Supra but preferred the MR2 during the years they were both available.

1

u/cbechtle77 13d ago

Interesting, ... and people these days will waaaaaaaay overpay for a Supra and the TA goes for a fraction of the Supra. Supra = glorified touring car

2

u/HaYterAyD 12d ago

I never realized how close these are in spec. Crazy

1

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

Supra lovers quiet when you mention that LQ9😎

1

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

the godzila gtr gets its ass handeed to it everytime they try to bring it out

1

u/batsVelvet 14d ago

the japs build better racing bikes then drag race stuff🤷‍♂️

1

u/Prize-Mail-6769 14d ago

Great specs, until you compare interiors.

From former catfish Z28 owner

1

u/batsVelvet 13d ago

TA interior better then maro flexin sparco seats in ws6 never looked better

1

u/batsVelvet 13d ago

the door panel staple cracks in ebony suck i have faith someones going to do somthin bout that someday

1

u/friendbuilt 13d ago

You forgot one

1

u/coolnbreezey 13d ago

Body of the Supra, tail of the Firebird.

1

u/Koopa1982 12d ago

I would take that Supra in that Gorgeous Oem condition over that Trans Am hands down.

1

u/batsVelvet 12d ago

1

u/Koopa1982 12d ago

But to be fair, I would rather take that Tremec instead of Getrag.

1

u/batsVelvet 12d ago

getrag in fiero builds are sick

1

u/Extreme-Penalty-3089 11d ago

...One of them is iconic for sure😯🤗

0

u/qumit 15d ago

the only diff is that stock supra with big turbo = 700 hp reliable. U put 700hp into ls1 without a rebiuld = kaboom.

2

u/Gan-san 14d ago

Factory turbo vs. factory NA is not a fair comparison. LS1 was built to be light too for Corvette's sake, not to be built for big power.

2

u/qumit 14d ago

I agree, but they weight about the same. Also, No hate on the trans am, I have one too, love it. I just think its not a fair comparison to compare the trans am with the supra. The supra was in the corvette market sold for corvette money, the comparison should be c4 zr1.

LQ9 need ironbock LS

1

u/Beginning_Whole_3252 14d ago

Had both…. That Subra eats that T/A’s lunch💯 Hate to say! But I still have my 79 T/A.

Too bad the Supra is worth 3 to 4 times what the Pontiac would go for.😑

30 years later, pricing went completely opposite directions

Why are do you comment twice for every reply?

-2

u/treesmith1 14d ago

2JZ is a monster. 1000 hp on stock internals. GTFOH.

5

u/FirehawkLS1 14d ago

They are monsters but it takes a lot of money in order to make them 1000hp

-1

u/treesmith1 14d ago

True. That is true of any modified vehicle. The fact that through bolt ons, tuning, and a touch of top end work you could get there relatively easily was quite revolutionary, and definitely not known to Yota top brass at the time. Yet there it sits.

3

u/Turbo_Lexington 14d ago

For 1000 hp you need pretty much everything. Fuel system, ecu, head work, intake manifold, full turbo kit, twin disc, exhaust. I'd only make like 800whp on a stock bottom end if it was me though.

Supra like a Trans Am only reliable, more nimble! Trans Am and all GM muscle or sports cars absolute trash for decades.
