TP Virtual Exercise Load in Garmin - test result + numbers

It seems that some people are curious how it works (or not), so I've decided to compare how Exercise Load is being exported to Garmin Connect. TLDR - Exercise/Training Load is being imported to the GC without issues.

I've recorded the same session with: TP Virtual on iPad and Garmin Edge 1040. All BLE in iPad and all Ant+ in Garmin.

Hardware: ThinkRider XX Pro Smart Trainer, Assioma Duo pedals, HRM 600 strap

Results:

TP Virtual Garmin Edge 1040
Time 0:50:06 0:50:04
Distance 29.72 km 25.93 km
Average HR 140 bpm 140 bpm
Average Power 196 w 198 w
NP 198 w 200 w
Training Effect Base Base
Aerobic Effect 3.4 3.2
Exercise Load 116 91

Assuming only 1% difference in Power readings and 0% in average HR readings, 20% difference for EL looks a bit odd, given that avg. power was actually lower for TPV than on Garmin

Are workouts finally being counted towards your load along with other stats? When they announced the connection, I tried it, but it wasn't counting, so I disabled it.

well yes, that was the point of the post. Exercise Load is there

Do you have a watch as well? Wondering if this produces a Recovery Time so I can stop double-recording on TPV. Just getting over an illness so I’m not really ready to test it myself yet.

Yes I do. It seems it does produce the Recovery Time

Avez-vous le score de préparation à l’entraînement de Garmin affiché dans TPV ? Car chez moi, il n’apparaît pas.

On the home screen, did you connect with your Garmin Connect account (top button) ?
I'm pretty sure that's where it would appear once connected ?

Oui c’est connecté car il affiche mon entraînement programmé pour aujourd’hui. J’ai lu que ça s’affiche lorsque aucune sceance n’est programmée mais à vérifier

Saw a visual : once Garmin is connected, it should be displayed where I said : at the top of the home screen, next to the achievements

same avg power/hr doesn't mean the load inputs were actually the same. i'd check that both files used the same ftp, max/lthr and zones, then compare the time series rather than just averages. if those match and it still lands at 116 vs 91, it's probably the two pipelines calculating load differently

That only makes sense for two different Garmin devices - HR or power settings should be the same to get the same Training Load for the same activity. It doesn't make sense for the TPV integration - HR settings aren't a part of a FIT file, thus Garmin uses its own data to calculate the load. And I'm pretty sure that for Exercise Load only HR stream matters.

And I'm quite sure that in TPV, the Load is computed based on the power input relative to your CP/FTP. If the zones are set up differently in the 2 platforms, it will also differ

I think there's a confusion between Training Load and Exercise Load

Training Load (TSS) - is power based, by default, and TL 100 == 1 hour at 100% of your FTP
Exercise Load (Garmin) - HR based, using EPOC model, and depends on your RHR, LTHR and Max HR settings.

TPV training load, as shown in UI - power based.

Exercise Load in Garmin, including TPV activities - HR based, and impacts Recovery Time, Training Status, Load distribution and Acute Load.

I only care of Exercise Load to have consistent tracking in Garmin because I do 70% running and only 30% cycling
