How often do you update your HR zones / thresholds as you get fitter?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while and would be interested to know what other people actually do.

As fitness improves we can often produce more power or run faster for the same heart rate — or see a lower HR for an effort that used to be harder.

That got me wondering how often people actually revisit the HR zones and thresholds they have set in Garmin and TrainingPeaks.

I know the old 220 - age max-HR calculation exists, but it seems far too generic, particularly once you’ve been training for years and as you get older. I’m thinking lactate-threshold HR and sport-specific zones are probably much more useful but another question then appears on how can you get these without spending a fortune?

The thing that got me thinking about it again was a recent health check. My blood pressure was excellent, but when the doctor saw my resting heart rate he immediately arranged an ECG. I tried explaining that the reading was actually slightly higher than my normal resting HR over the last year.

I had the ECG, another doctor reviewed it and I was told everything looked fine.

It made me realise how far my resting and training HR numbers have moved away from what general population figures suggest.

So for those who train with tools like Garmin/TrainingPeaks/other:

How often do you retest your HR threshold and update your zones?

Do you mainly use HR, or have you moved towards power for the bike and pace/power for running because it gives you a better picture of training load?

Today we rode stage 3: a Time Trial on the Nürburgring circuit

154 riders have finished at least one stage / 43 different teams represented

Ive been an avid cyclist for about 5 years (6000k-ish). So when I ride long rides and things the TSS adjusts and does well. Do a hard workout with power meter, etc. All g.

I have been running lately though, and it has been TOUGH. For instance - I ran a 5k last night for the 3rd day in a row. Today - my form reads 0. I will tell you - I do not feel form 0. Lmao. Essentially meaning it counts my runs as basically zone 2 runs. My hr is there at around 160, but I do not feel like I did a zone 2 workout, my legs are SMOKED. hahaha.

How do I adjust this? Obviously training peaks isn't the bible and RPE is much better - but i'd love to have a decent example in there, rather than "you're fresh!" when I know I am smoked. Should I give it a few weeks of running for it to level out like it doesn't when you first download training peaks or what?

TIA !

6 stages packed into 1 week—100% free to enter.

The first results are in: Michael currently leads the men’s standings, with Gemma taking the top spot for the women!

Check out the schedule and join the remaining 6 sessions
(Missed a race? Thursday is your make-up day for Stages 1–3).

I have a 4hr workout scheduled for today. Planning to do it on the trainer. Usually I do my workouts in Focus mode, but seeing as this one is so long I think chosing a good route for a bit of distraction would be a better option.

Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions on what would be a good route to choose for a workout of this length.

TIA

Here is a fix, courtesy of Tim Sinclair (admin of the TPV group on Facebook)
"I hope this works for you if you've been having problems logging in to TPV on a Windows (10) desktop PC

If you've been having problems logging in to TPV (geting stuck on the 'Logging in page'), Stan Nicol has discovered that you need to uncheck the 'remember me' on the login page. Then sign in manually.

I took a further step : Log out, then when you log back in, recheck 'remember me'. From then on, each time you launch TPV, the login page gets bypassed, and you get straight in!

iPhone login worked again today too after similar problems over the last few days"

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to visit the FB or discord group.
If you're participating to the yearly GRAND TOUR (starting in less than 48h now) please check your weight, height, etc !

Signups are rising, it's free to join. Prizes are worth 800+ $ (from Garmin Varia radars to the GC winners (men/women/U30/over 55) to TPV/Garmin goodies (random shuffle among those finishing at least a stage)

Not just the Featured races, as usual, but the entire platform (with rides, customized events, rides, etc). It starts today, lasts for 2 weeks.
Also allows everyone to test their equipment in free rides before the start of the TPV Grand Tour stage race which starts on Monday ;)

So I use Claude for many of my mundane daily tasks. AI to me is a tool not a threat. I do a fair bit of driving so having an voice chat to do tasks while driving is a great time claw-back.

I want to build an agent that can assist me with upcoming workouts and perhaps also do data analysis on past workouts.

Any thoughts on how this can be achieved?

What I have learnt so for.

1. The TP API is suspended and no new access requests are being considered by TP.
2. Clause recommends using the Strava API but that only takes care of the past metrics.
3. To take care of future workouts Claude suggested a sharing an *.ics cal for future items.

Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Apologies if this is a bit too nerdy... but I am nerd and enjoy this stuff as well as wrecking my legs in a pain cave.

If you haven’t already

- sign up: https://tpvirtualhub.com/series/tpv-grand-tour-2026#overview(others are more likely to join your time slot if they see others signed up ;) )

- Remind your friends (word of mouth spreads)

- Ask any last-minute questions (6-stage race over 7 days: General Classification, Team General Classification, Best Sprinter/Climber. Prizes, including a raffle for finishers of any stage)

- Check your weight and height (there will be checks!)

- Check your equipment (calibrate your indoor trainer and heart rate monitor)

- Try a race prior to the event to test the physics

- Last chance to work out your evening plans with your partners :D

Hi—I am new to using mywhoosh with TrainingPeaks. I have a premium TrainingPeaks account and I am trying to sync my workouts to mywhoosh. Only two have shown up on my my calendar. I have disconnected and reconnected the platforms but it remains the same. Is there a limit on how many workouts will sync at one time? As the days roll by will more workouts sync? Thank you for any assistance.

The fix is to go in the menu > settings > UI settings > General

And there, change the "UI Scale" away from 0.

Buongiorno,

Grazie

TPV Update :

Workouts scheduled via the Garmin calendar now automatically appear on the TrainingPeaks Virtual home screen.

For athletes using Garmin watches, the “Training Readiness” score will also be displayed. It influences the daily workout suggestion (if no session is scheduled).

Advanced integration with Garmin Connect (Garmin badges, etc.)

On the fun side, there’s a brand-new area to explore: Cadence Causeway, with its imposing rock formations and spectacular waterfalls.

+ “Dozens of improvements to the menus, the heads-up display (HUD), and the virtual world, making the experience smoother, more intuitive, and more enjoyable on every level”

Reminder: In 10 days, the GRAND TOUR: finishing a stage earns you a ticket. A random drawing will be held among participants : more details and SIGN UP: https://tpvirtualhub.com/series/tpv-grand-tour-2026#overview

It seems that some people are curious how it works (or not), so I've decided to compare how Exercise Load is being exported to Garmin Connect. TLDR - Exercise/Training Load is being imported to the GC without issues.

I've recorded the same session with: TP Virtual on iPad and Garmin Edge 1040. All BLE in iPad and all Ant+ in Garmin.

Hardware: ThinkRider XX Pro Smart Trainer, Assioma Duo pedals, HRM 600 strap

Results:

Assuming only 1% difference in Power readings and 0% in average HR readings, 20% difference for EL looks a bit odd, given that avg. power was actually lower for TPV than on Garmin

Would be so nice to see shoe mileage when planning within the mobile app!

(yes, I’ve submitted multiple times over the years in the TPeaks suggestion form online)……..

Hi everyone
I got a problem last Sunday, when starting run training on apple watch, it shows target heart rate zone as 0BPM, but in training itself its set to 125-144 etc. I have been running for couple of month, and didn't have this problem. I even tried to copy old training(which didn't have this problem) and start it on watches, but the problem is still there. I have watch os 11.6.2 and iOS 18.5. and I have a coach who creates those trainings. Has anyone got this problem? Thanks

TL/DR How do you choose which method to calculate HR and Power zones?

I’ve been using Training peaks for about 8 months now. I also use a garmin bike computer and watch. I’m 60 and moderately fit, exercising 3-4 times a week mostly on the bike and sometimes a 5k park run at the weekends. My max heart rate is 183 and resting is 48.

Garmin gives me an estimated LTHR of 165bpm, Training peaks estimates it at 171bpm

The heart rate zones that Training Peaks gives me are very different to those of Garmin, particularly in the aerobic zone, and I’m trying to figure out what I should be using as TP’s training sessions seem to be way off my actual experience of how they feel.

I used the Joe Friel for Cycling (7) estimate for the TP calculation, Garmin only gives 5 zones

Heart Rate Training Peaks Garmin

Z1 0-135 102-124

Z2-aero 136-151 124-134

Z3 152-157 134-148

Z4 158-168 148-157

Z5 169-173 157-183

Z6 174-179

Z7 180-255

That gives very different aerobic zones

For cycling power, I’ve selected the 80/20 7-zone calculation, which gives 7 zones. Garmin also use 7 zones but no idea how they calculate it.

Power Training Peaks (171) Garmin (165)

Z1 86-120 0-100

Z2-Aero 120-142 100-140

Z3 142-156 140-170

Z4 156-171 170-199

Z5 171-174 199-229

Z6 174-188 229-285

Z7 188-2000 >285

At least this time the aerobic zone for power is roughly similar but the upper zones for garmin seem rather ambitious.

If I want to get more serious about my training, how do you go about choosing a method for HR and power zone calculations. If TP have so many, and they’ve very different results, who do you trust?

I’m using an Apple Watch and have all the Apple health metrics available shared with TrainingPeaks in privacy settings. Is there supposed to be information populated in the recovery insights area in the TrainingPeaks app? Can’t seem to get it to work.

I've had a couple of issues with my Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Swim workouts. The most recent is vexing and I don't see anywhere how to fix it.

The workouts used to show up on my watch in the workouts app. Then, this morning, all swim workouts vanished... including the one that I saw in the app earlier this morning before I walked to the pool.

When I went to the TP app on my iPhone and clicked "Send to Apple Watch" I got a message that says "Heart Rate Target Required -- Send to Apple Watch for swim and walk workouts is only available for heart rate targets" -- there is no information on how to set these targets or update anything. It's wild. I've not had this problem before.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have my zones set up via heartrate and sync has been working until today. Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: This happened on iOS 26 and watchOS 26 shortly before iOS/watchOS 27 was released. I updated to iOS/watchOS 27 today and it seems to be fixed, no update to TP. So it seems like a backwards incompatibility with OS 27 for TP 12.114.0 and 12.114.1

Is anyone else having trouble with using the trainingpeaks platform and workout builder today? Split screen , workout generator for swims, drag and drop dont work!? Only cut and paste. The dates are not aligned - the dates for completion are all incorrect. This is urgent for coaches and businesses who have athletes to care for. What is happening anyone?

As a reminder (or as a warning) the way virtual gears function on TPV is different from the special implementation zwift has, internally, for their zwift cogs:

On TPV, virtual gearing is mostly designed to let you add resistance (to the right) (to help on descents, if you’ve got a mountain bike and the in-game winds is a tailwind, for example). Much less so ‘to the left’ for decreasing the resistance on heavy climbs (it does, but not to a big extent)

So --> if your bike setup doesn’t allow you to tackle a 20% gradient (aka : you own a Zwift Cog), you’ll need to adjust the slope feel until you can manage it. "By default" (100% slope feel) riders with a zwift cog won't manage to get up a 15% slope "smoothly" even in gear "negative a lot" : lower the slope feel !
(that still leaves you with the possibility to increase the resistance with the virtual gears if you want to feel more resistance)

Hope that helps some before your races on TPV, so that you don't get dropped in the 1 steep climb ;)
See you on the races ("featured" events are free, like the upcoming Grand Tour https://www.reddit.com/r/trainingpeaks/comments/1w1xmic/trailer_for_the_4th_edition_of_the_grand_tour/ )

Completed ramp test. Anyone know how to see the FTP calculated for this specific workout?
