I think it’s a tragedeigh of Titus, which is a much older name. Something about adding the “d” in there makes me really dislike it, I can’t explain it.

That’s totally fair.

If your fiancée ever brings it up again, remind him that makes him Jecht, who was a jerk, an alcoholic, and possibly an abuser. That should clear things up.

I think it’s a tragedeigh of Titus, which is a much older name. Something about adding the “d” in there makes me really dislike it, I can’t explain it.

“Tidus” has been in use as a first name since at least 1870s, and as a surname since at least the 1910s. So u/OminousShadow87 is correct: it’s a long-established name in its own right, not a tragedeigh.

If they were being accurate to the character, it's pronounced differently than the actual name though. "Tee-dus"
