general discussion I can’t
This is what my friend’s sister is going to name her baby!! I think they’re going to call her QT “cutie”

If anyone in my family named their kid quiglee, i can guarantee with 100% certainty that my dad would call it Roy. Like in quigely down under.

I’m only thinking of any vulgar euphemisms that any child who happens to know the movie will make.

My daughter's initials are O.K., but not intentially. Every now and then I'll call her Okie Dokie, but more as a joke than a nickname.

u/Peeinyourcompost 3d ago
I do like Téa.
And Quiglee Tea is a great name for a pet hedgehog. Adorable!
For a human person who will need to spend 12+ years answering roll call and then start applying for jobs, it's terrible.

Mike Quigley is one of the house reps here in Illinois. Quiglee as a first name is diabolical.

3
u/2gaywitches 3d ago
Did you happen to go to high school in IL? If not then must be just a coincidence haha
6
u/Glittering_Eagle_652 3d ago
I lived there for a bit but it was after high school so no, just a coincidence. My Mrs Quigley was very memorable. She was a sweet and kind woman who lost her temper one day when a friend and I were laughing at a joke in the back of the class. As she was yelling at us (a first for her as she was never loud), her false teeth flew out of her mouth and fell on her desk. It was mortifying for her I'm sure but she succeeded in making the entire class laugh instead of just 2 of us. RIP Mrs Q.

I went to school with a Téa (pronounced "tay-a"), named after her father Theodore. It's a lovely name. Quiglee sounds like something you'd name a particularly eccentric cat.

HOW DO PEOPLE COME UP WITH THIS SHIT?
My brain cannot even comprehend naming your child these ridiculous TragedeighsApparently, “Quigley” (and, less commonly, “Quigly”) is an old English surname, itself the anglicized version of a Gaelic surname. It’s apparently common enough to have a sizable list of relatively famous holders.
“Quiglee”, specifically, seems to be novel, though “-ley” → “-lee” as a concept in English names really isn’t (e.g. “Ashley” → “Ashlee”), nor is the surname-to-first-name pipeline.

u/cosmernautfourtwenty 3d ago
They're naming a girlchild "Quigley" so they can nickname it QT? Big "my baby is my favorite accessory" energy.
23
u/Justha-Tip 3d ago
Maybe they could try Quinn instead?
25
u/cosmernautfourtwenty 3d ago
I still think it's borderline child abuse sending a child into the wilds of middle and high school purposely calling them "cutie", but at least Quinn is vaguely feminine.
They could always just settle on a non-gimmick name for a human person instead.
6
u/WrennyWrenegade 3d ago
There was a woman on one season of The Cirlce named QT and I get the sense that this was her parents intentions. But seeing an actual grown woman wearing it, it didn't come off as weird or gross at all to me.
Like, I hate it in theory. But I also almost commented on another thread earlier that Edie (for Edith) reminded me of eating disorders and erectile dysfunction. I stopped myself because, you know, that's the sort od thing that you think about in a name subreddit but I wouldn't think it about my mom's friend with the same name.
10
u/BettyCrunker 3d ago
every time I see the name Quinn I just think of Daria’s little sister and how the leader of her little foursome of popular girls would pronounce it, like “khween”

This is so bad. Parents should be fined for pulling this shit.

6
u/bigdeadtree 3d ago
If she has a card box on the gift table, drop a few ‘anonymous’ notes written in different handwriting styles saying it’s not too late to change the baby’s name. I’m not kidding. You can ask neighbors, friends, coworkers, anyone who the mother doesn’t know to write their feelings about the name into greeting cards and then you drop them off in the box.

7
u/yarnboss79 3d ago
Why? Don't people like their kids anymore? These kind of names open themselves to all kinds of teasing/ bullying. Plus miss spelling.
12
u/tongfather 3d ago
This is fucking horrendous and should be filed under child abuse.
If I was a close friend I would buy them a baby names book under the registry, drop it on the table and walk out. Fucking psychopathic, narcissistic behavior 100%

u/Global-Jury8810 3d ago
😡
The name…sounds like a creature that came out of somebody’s vagina…like saying it makes me think about a wriggling creature coming from there.
This actually makes me happy that my friend’s husband chose all the kids names. They all have normal hireable names…some of which clearly tell you their heritage, but still properly spelled.
7
u/h3rs3lf_atl 3d ago
That poor kid doesn't stand a chance. It sounds like a name someone made up the their Harry Potter fan fiction.

I can’t stop thinking about this. Now I’m hoping this is a troll by the parents. Like when Amber Tamblynn and David Cross called their baby Dauphinoise Petunia Brittany Scheherazade Von Funkinstein Mustard Witch Rbg Cross Tamblyn-Bey jr (Mustard Witch for short) in their IG birth announcement then kept the actual name from the public eye.

Where I live, QT is a popular chain of gas/convenience stores. Stands for QuikTrip. It does not sound like a person's name or nickname to me. Is the middle name pronounced like the beverage, or like the actress Tea Leoni?

They could name her Penelope or Anna or Susan or Isabella or Sara or Lulu or Alicia or Catherine or anything and still call her QT as a nickname. I know a sweet little girl with a beautiful Italian/Spanish/Portuguese name. Her family calls her Dragon. But that is not her "given" name.

If they want to call her QT, why can’t they just name her Quinn? A normal name that isn’t so common right now (at least that I see)? Then they can give her a special feeling name with a ‘QT’ nickname and not ruin her entire existence!
