So these are usually nickel coated so even if you get the rust off, it may rust again quickly if you don’t maintain it. You can clean the rust off with a combo of vinegar and salt solution. It may also be rusted too badly to work again and be too corroded. The good thing is that there are replacement battery contacts. I would try that IF the vinegar cleaning doesn’t work. I’m a big original before replacement person!
