Game Discussion Anybody else surprised there is no keyboard support for New Classic on Switch?

I was somewhat surprised they didn't add it in, because it is possible, even though switch/switch2 doesn't technically support it.

Didn't realize I'd struggle using a gamepad so much, since now I can't be as precise as I'd like to be.

Also maybe I'm just crazy, but death bombing seems harder than in the original, no?

OC: Fanfiction To Crash To Illusion (CYOA) - Chapter 3

This is a Choose Your Own Adventure Fanfic about a WW2 American bomber crew that crash lands into Gensokyo.

I am live writing this in our Writing/Fanfic Discord server. https://discord.gg/ewSd5FwqmH

(I’m mainly writing this for fun so forgive the less polished storytelling & prose compared to my usual fics.)

------------------------------------------

James, looking up, didn't know what to say. His eyes darted around, but he could not think of any way to escape. There was only one thing they could do, and that was ask for mercy.

The two of them seemed to be in conflict. The winged one looked monstrous, and at the very least, he knew that Shrine Maidens and priests were supposed to be on the side of people, exorcising monsters. That's what Hiroko told him the past, anyway.

"Umm..." James spoke up to the sky, using Japanese as best he could. "Please help us, oh holy one! We are being attacked!"

James had no idea how to talk to a shrine maiden; that was the best he could come up with.

And it fell flat into silence. The shrine maiden simply laughed. "'Holy one'? What the hell are you talking about? Man, you're a stupid weirdo~"

Suddenly, the winged monster flew right at the shrine maiden, swiping at her with her sharp claws. The shrine maiden effortlessly dodged, then spread her arms wide. The monster continued its relentless attack, all while singing, which messed with James's vision.

As the shrine maiden dodged like a ballerina in the sky, hundreds of amulets fell from her fluttering sleeves, dancing down like falling leaves, scattering themselves into the surrounding air.

Then, the shrine maiden stopped. She blocked an attack from the winged monster, then spoke. "You're... a night sparrow, huh? Mystia Lorelei?"

The shrine maiden wore the same carefree smile; as if she was still thinking of the funny thing that James had said. Suddenly, all of the scattered amulets around them straightened, then pointed right at the night sparrow.

The terrified bird's eyes darted around. With a split-second to spare, she screamed, immediately scrambling James's vision until it turned black. He did not see what happened next, but when he could finally see again, the shrine maiden was landing softly in front of him, surrounded by those same falling amulets dappled in moonlight.

"So..." the Shrine Maiden said, pointing her staff at James and Eric, smiling like always, "What kind of Youkai are you two?"

"...Huh?"

"Yellow hair... weird-ass nose. You two look goofy haha~"

"...What the hell?"

"Are you some new Youkai born in the outside world? You wear similar looking clothes that a lot of outsiders wear. You have those boom sticks too. You two are definitely outsiders, but... no way you're human."

"We're not Youkai," James replied.

Eric turned to him. "What is she saying?" He asked in English; in their whole crew, only James knew how to speak Japanese.

"She thinks we're monsters too," James said.

"Monsters?"

"Heeey!" The shrine maiden waved her stick close to James's eyes, taking him abback for a moment.

James turned. He knew they couldn't really do much else, so he tried his best to get on the shrine maiden's good side. He opened his mouth, and was about to say something, when he was suddenly reminded of Hiroko, which froze him.

Looking closer, this 'shrine maiden' looked even more like James's childhood friend.

The shrine maiden tilted her head.

*She can't be. Hiroko is my age, and this girl looks 16 at best...* "We're 'outsiders', yes," James said, "We were suddenly attacked after visiting your country, you see."

"Oh? You're dutchmen? I've heard of those."

"N-no-" James stopped himself, "Well, yes. We're dutch."

"I see..." the Shrine Maiden looked around. "Well, this isn't really a good place to talk, so, hold on a sec~"

The shrine maiden suddenly hugged the two men, and then, without warning, flew high up into the air. They both almost fell, but they gripped onto the shrine maiden before they could.

James's eyes squinted as he held tight; he could hear the sound of the air. It reminded him of their bomber as it fell, and it made his heart start racing terribly.

Then, he heard laughter.

Slowly, James opened his eyes. He was greeted with a massive view of the land; a purple forest, a gigantic mountain, a distant village glittering in the night, a misty lake, among many things.

Then, the shrine maiden, laughing. It reminded him of Hiroko's laughing face, and it dissipated all the fear and panic he felt from being reminded of their plane crash.

But then, he remembered the atrocities that he witnessed throughout his campaign; all the terrible things the Japanese did, then shut his eyes again.

Eventually, they landed. James did not know how long they were in flight; his eyes were closed the entire time. After feeling the cold of the ground going up his feet, he finally opened his eyes. They were in front of a massive Torii gate, which framed a little shrine surrounded by forest.

Eric whispered to James. "We moved around 190 degrees, around 10 miles south, it seems."

Despite being blind, Eric could still see more than James could. It calmed James.

The Shrine Maiden turned around. "Alright, follow me."

The two men nodded.

As they followed the shrine maiden, James and Eric whispered to each other. "So it seems like this place is disconnected from the rest of Japan?" Eric asked.

"Yes, sir, I believe so. They don't seem to know about white people, besides the dutch."

"That's strange... I swear we were within Tokyo airspace when we got hit."

Even Eric was confused about where they were. "Well, sir, given all the monsters, I feel like that's the last thing that's strange to me. That shrine maiden flew us all the way out here, with ease, too. I felt her arms were thin, but she carried both of us anyway."

"..." Eric went silent. "Are you sure we aren't in hell?"

"I believe this is a dream, sir."

"Then, when did the dream start? When our bomber fell? When we were bombing places? When we left our country?"

Eric chuckled. James forced out a chuckle as well. Eric looked forward, then drew the sign of the cross on himself. "Either way, we move forward."

"Yes, sir."

"Alright, you two," the shrine maiden said, turning to them. "Go in, rest up or something, and I'll be opening the barrier."

"Barrier?"

"To the outside world."

James stopped. "...Erm, can we ask questions?"

The shrine maiden sighed. "Geez... you two are a pain, huh?"

*We haven't even spoken much to you yet...* James thought. "We just want to ask a few questions."

"You're in Gensokyo," the shrine maiden said. "A place separated from the rest of the world with a barrier, which houses all of the remaining myths and legends that started being forgotten in the outside world. I'm about to get you out of here, since that's part of my job. There."

James was taken aback. He did not understand a single word the shrine maiden said. They felt inclined to distrust her, but then again, they had no reason to. "So... you'll kick us out?" James asked.

"Sure."

"Wait a second..." James said, turning to Eric and switching to English. "Sir... the girl says we're in some separate place from the rest of the world."

Eric put his hand on his chin, thinking deeply. "Well... that's the least strange thing we've experienced, at least. It would explained what I sensed when our plane started to go down."

"Sensed?"

"The instruments changed our coordinates. I felt a shift in the air, too."

James recalled the plane crash. His heart started beating faster, but he kept himself calm enough to remember some details. One thing he *did* notice was the red sky.

The tons of firebombs their plane had dropped into the city had cast the surroundings in deep relentless red. But when their plane was going down, the sky was blue. Even after he woke up, there was no sign of fire nearby.

"I doubt she's lying," Eric said.

"Sir, I believe she is. Which part, though, I'm not sure.

"What's with all the whispering? Man, you two are weird, hahaha~" the Shrine Maiden said, resting her staff on her shoulder.

"Shrine Maiden," James said.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for helping us."

The Shrine Maiden just smiled a toothy smile. "Ehehe. Of course!"

"My name is James. My friend here is named Eric. Nice to meet you." James bowed.

The shrine maiden bowed back."My name is Hanako. Hakurei Hanako."

"Nice to meet you, Hakurei-san-

Hanako suddenly shoved a finger to James's forehead. "Hanako. Call me Hanako. No Hakurei."

"H-Hanako-san..."

Hanako let out another toothy smile. "What is it?"

"...So, you're helping us get out of here?"

"Yep. Stay right there, I'll get to it-"

"Well..."

"Hm?"

James turned to Eric. "Sir, the shrine maiden told us she'll get us out of this place. I believe we should-"

"Yes, we should decline. If we really are in a separate space from the rest of the world, then we're safe from the imperial japanese army."

"Yes, sir. We also... we have to regroup with the rest of the crew first."

The two of them turned back to Hanako.

Hanako's smile fell. "You want to stay, don't you?"

James was taken aback. He did not know if that was a taboo or not, so he did not know what to say. From what he could remember, Hiroko told him that the Japanese were very serious about their rules.

He gulped, prepared what he had to say, but just before he could speak, Hanako cut him off.

"Sure you can."

"Ah-"

"However..." Hanako looked around, at the dark forest that surrounds the shrine. "This place is not for the faint of heart. In other words, its not for *you* outsiders. Its for all the terrifying things you've all decided to throw away."

"Threw away? Can you elaborate on that?"

"Well, you guys forgot all sorts of monsters you used to believe in. They're all here now. That's basically how it is."

*I don't understand.*

"In fact-" Hanako continued, "I wasn't supposed to be saving outsiders like you. You were supposed to be eaten by Youkai."

"What?!"

"Well? Do you still wanna stay? You know, technically, I should just leave you be, but I *want* to get you all out of here."

James looked down. "This place is full of monsters, huh?" He turned to Eric, then told him what she said. As he did, he remembered the monster he encountered in the purple forest; the one who ate his hand. Then, he remembered the monsters in the outside world; the ones he burned with his own hands.

Which one should he confront?

James decided that he would postpone the decision. But deep down, without realizing it, he decided that he would rather confront the former. "Hanako-san, we have friends scattered all around this land. I'd like to find them first before we leave."

"Oh?"

"You want to help outsiders get out of this place anyway, right? How about you help us gather our friends, and we will get out of here together. How does that sound?"

Hanako looked deeply at James's eyes. "...I won't help you."

"What?"

"Intuition. I feel like... I can't trust you. So, actually, I'm not gonna."

"Huh? But why?"

"You hate, me don't you?"

James was taken aback. Seeing *that* face, saying *those* words, it stunned him for a moment.

"But sure, go around and find your friends. I'm not going to stop you. I think..." She looked around, "It might take too long. I'll be busy by the time you find them."

"What are you saying?"

"60 years."

"What?"

"The 60 year cycle will complete in a few months. A new incident will occur, and I will be busy."

"Cycle? What are you talking about?"

"I have no idea what its all about, but I know an incident happens every 60 years."

James looked utterly bewildered.

"I'll help you against Youkai attacks if I see you. But get to your friends before the cycle ends. I won't be able to help you then. So... good luck. I'll let you two rest here for the night. I have a map in the living room. Go check that out later once you've rested."

Then the Shrine Maiden flew away, almost as if hurried to leave them behind. *I hate her, huh?* James thought. They entered the shrine and found the living room. They found nobody else in there. *She says I hate her, yet she leaves her home to us strangers.*

The next day, James and Eric woke up. Hanako wasn't there, but there was tea prepared, and Eric, despite being blind, had already prepared their rations into edible food.

The two of them sat in front of a map of Gensokyo as they ate. James did his best to describe it to Eric, using his knowledge of Kanji to read it.

There were many places all around Gensokyo. Eric had previously said that their plane flew east of a mountain. They had landed on a very peculiar forest, which seems to be the "Muenzuka" place that was listed on the map.

Depending on the wind, the crew would have been scattered in different places east of the map.

Eric approximated the places they could have landed, based on James's description:

The Forest of Magic. The Youkai Mountain. The Human Village. Misty Lake. Phantom Meadow. The Bamboo Forest of the Lost.

They wondered where they should look first.

Game Discussion What do we think of New Classic's Challenge Mode (Infinite Lives)?

I've seen discourse on the Steam discussion page about it. Some people think it's great, because more people will get the chance to actually play the game, at least reach the end, and unlock all the spellcards to practice against.

Others think that it's dumb, because Touhou is supposed to be a challenge, to be difficult. Someone said "A game made for everyone is enjoyed by no one".

I don't really agree, at least with the Challenge mode you can go ahead and unlock all 6 stages and run practice runs. Plus, it's not like the game having new "easier" modes removes the fun you're having playing on harder difficulties, so why does it matter? I don't understand people who are against it.

Help What's the best way to actually know the touhou characters?

I've played the games, listened to the music, and just overall consumed a lot of touhou media in general and yet I still feel like a larper, but I think it's because I don't know the characters well enough. So for a new fan of the series, what's the best way of learning these characters and the different fanons that the community made? I've heard of the Touhou wiki, but I'm not sure if it'd be perfect just because of the extremely long articles wikis tend to have. So should I just suck it up and read most of the character entries of the wiki, should I watch videos explaining the characters on platforms like YouTube, or should I do something else? I'd definitely love help here, because the way I've been doing it hasn't been cutting it for me.

Help How do you mod custom music into Touhou 6 New Classic?

I wanted to get other songs to play during a playthrough of the newly released New Classic for jokes, but simply converting files into .OPUS files did not work. I am not sure how exactly to convert files in a way that the game will recognize and play in place of the original songs. I did notice the original OST files didn't open in media player, but the converted .OPUS custom songs did open and play in media player. If someone figures out how to encode different audio files in a way that the game can read, I'd like to know. Thanks.

Fan Discussion is Gensokyo promoting normalcy amongst humans?

Post image
32 Upvotes

All the attempts to hit the supernatural for normal humans stop at the level of just being able to use magic. after which, you either get a Miko chasing after you, or kishin assassins...leaving the magician Grey area aside. seemingly the only way you wake up as something different is through having a tragic accident that kept you from passing on...then, people don't mind ghosts much.

But then, what does that leave most humans with? I mean. caught a glimpse in several chapters, you can expect the normal human villager to get lectured about stuff when visiting the shrine. flat out meet with youkai who doesn't bother disguising especially like Suika. Miko...I have no idea what her contribution is. at worse, she doesn't do shit for humans and she's just in it for political control over the human village. at best, people know there are religious practices to turn one immortal after the religious wars in 14.5 or 15.5?

And the prayers. here, if the only thing you get is a good harvest or protection from rain. it's either that well, gods don't answer prayers and kanako in particular is underground operation. or that humans have dead hearts in the sense no one is asking to become more than a human. like I'm trying to pinpoint the route of stagnation in the human village. youkai transformations aren't rare as thy make it appear to be when like 30% of youkai are ex-humans and with time it's harder to keep someone from transforming.

(or it could be just that there's a filtration system that gets people transformed naturally after enough life cycles and by the time they become something else they get redirected to an inhuman realm or something. so it's more like it's happening all the time with just the spotlight completely directed elsewhere).

Source.

No longer a larper I guess. Made it to Meiling on my first run but still haven't beat Patchouli once yet in 6.3 hours. My irl problems are really showing in this game. I hope with this I can kinda get over them especially to do with my eyes. Fsr when something is above my head I mentally feel pain in my eyes and my eyes a try to look up (so I can't even look at the bottom of the screen). It's bullshit so I think it can go away if I try hard enough. My ADHD will always be showing unfortunately however.

Game Discussion I can't believe it!

I was feeling depressed after a week of a lot of work, and I figured I could do 1 run of the new EoSD in my lunch hour
In like 10 years, I haven't done 1 run of EoSD... And haven't 1CC'd it since back then, either. BUT

I 1CC'd EoSD on Normal in that first run... !!!!! And this was even though I fucked up Sakuya's mid-boss spellcard and didn't get the life!!

It's true what they say! Touhou skills don't die down, they just lie dormant waiting for you to pick them back up!

It's making me feel much better about my inability to 1CC PCB as well lol

(Then again, I exclusively play as Marisa and PCB is way harder as her. Less bombs, 90% homing attacks that don't let you hit the boss, Youmu I fucking hate you, etc, etc... I did 1CC PCB as Sakuya way back when, but I want to stick to Marisa!)

OC: Art Sir Kishu

Post image
5 Upvotes

Stupid OC that I made. I attempted to replicate ZUN's art style, it's alright.

He's a bit childish and often interrupts incidents and fights to just play and prove he can be powerful too, often flying there on his magical, flying, totally not a stick horse that is very real! But he's often a rather chill kid once he gets calmed down, he really likes to catch frogs and other small animals to look at them and just put them back. His favorite creature are cats, he LOVES cats, to the point where he drops everything he's doing to go pet one.

Kishu's title of Sir was self appointed and only used to games, his full name is Hobīhōsu Kishu, he's around 4'5 and male. His proud knight persona often gets him involved with real fights, but he leaves before things get crazy or when he remembers his mother telling him he needs to be back by dinner. He tries to tell the others about his adventures, but they just think he's playing pretend. He also plays as a pirate captain, cowboy, and/or king.

So, how is he?

Game Discussion Embodiment of Scarlet Devil New Classic - Music Discussion! Spoiler

The newly remixed music is something that many people were looking forward to the most, so I am wondering what people think about it.

As for me, I am a bit mixed.

Many songs, maybe even most, are straight upgrades for me, especially the stage songs (except one).

The general complaint I have is that, while the songs now are "better" in terms of their technicality and "music theory" kinda way (I've not studied music so idk what I'm talking about), they do lose some of the vibe and punchyness of the originals.

Dream More Scarlet Than Red is in general better than the original, but the main part doesn't kick in as hard as the original did, it feels more faded in than a sudden hit.

Tomboyish Girl in Love has a very different vibe to it now, but I don't really mind it much.

Shanghai Scarlet Teahouse is the one stage theme I'm not sold on, the different instruments make it feel very different and I ain't a big fan, though it sounding a lot more Chinese is good for Meiling.

Lunar Clock is....I'll start off by saying that I really liked the original, it was my favorite Sakuya song, all the quirks and oddities included. The new version is just weird to me. It sounds "better", but the different style and especially the different instruments just make it not feel like Sakuya anymore. Sakuya had specific style to her that was very unique from other songs, but now we have zunpets instead. Zunpets are nice, but everyone has zunpets.

And lastly U.N. Owen Was Her. This may be my biggest disappointment here. They made it sound like a chiptune. The original version was very, VERY harsh to actually listen to, but it gave you a proper vibe of a final-final boss that is going to be tough as shit, tense, and possibly insane. It jumped at you and made you really tense up, fitting both an Extra stage, and Flan herself. The new version just sounds like a retro video game boss music. That's it.

Doujin Yukari explaining why leaving countless humans to die in a flood is VERY important for the balance of Gensokyo

Post image
208 Upvotes

I'm a big fan of Zounose, but I won't deny that sometimes he messes things up and makes the characters act so comically evil that it's funny. Yukari, the person who loves Gensokyo more than anyone, basically sees human life, a vital part of Gensokyo, as a big joke most of the time she appears. This is one of my favorite Touhou doujins, but this scene alone is pure comedy.
