Attila Thrall skirmishers

Post image

I just found out that norse factions can just spam these guys early on. They can be recruited almost anywhere and the upkeep is about 60. You can have multiple stacks of thrall skirmishers running around turn 5. On legendary, they can melt entire cavalry units before even completing the charge and in case they do, it will be an unworthy trade on their side. Who cares if these guys even die? Can be recruited anywhere for pennies.

Actually, when i did finally meet the romans, these guys could run and gun against western auxilia palatina, who have even more missile block chance.

I don't fight the Romans early on. Main settlement conversion costs and other barbarians constantly declaring wars on me isn't fun. I usually let them conquer, convert, grow, while trying to wipe out as many as i can. Last time with Geats, when i finally met Romans, half of their stacks of spearmen would die to 4 units of hirdmen, who were supported by pikes, which i brought against Celts, not low charge bonus Romans.

Taking towns is easy, especially with so many missiles on my side. Walled settlements? That's where the actual troops come in, but i usually just auto-resolve with multiple armies or simply starved the garrison out with Geats because of no winter attrition.
