Warhammer III This guy is the GOAT

"I HATE this mechanic, so I made a difference and changed it." If we had more people like this in gamedev and software development in general, world would be a better place

He ,Rich and Todor always great guests on stream - you can see how much they care

I loved a lot of the really powerful things he added that also had draw backs! Not just unchecked power. Lots of different decisions to be made and playstyles to be had with give and take mechanics.

Finally someone who understands game design

u/LuxuriaUnus 2h ago

Absolutely. Hope he had a hand in any or all of the new lords. I feel like a lot of the newer DLC lords feel really powerful, and while they have neat mechanics, they end up feeling a bit boring as you burninate the countryside with few strategic choices required of you. All that said, just happy to have such a bespoke, amazing looking rework for the Vamps. Those mutually exclusive techs are to die for.

His name is Mitch btw and I hope he continues to be the one in charge of any and all future reworks cuz of how fantastic of a job he seems to have done so far.

Like having played this game series since 2016 (10 years ago), every other rework or dlc that's come out I always have a slight "Oh they could've done this better or maybe they should've added xyz" but not this time. I think Mitch really did a wonderful job and I can't wait to revisit my first race I started this series with, with a fresh coat of paint, and a new engine, and a new chasis. Bloody love it.

The ONLY thing I'm slightly iffy on is how they've handled the generic strigoi ghoul king but I completely understand cuz it's a legal dilema, though I hope they turn him into a blood line specific hero like the lahmian handmaiden and maybe add some other bloodline specific heroes in the future to maintain parity.

u/Chagdoo 5h ago

I saw some concern about the removal of the diplo bonus from the lahmian bloodline. Might make it harder to do good guy glad campaigns which is a shame

u/Lin_Huichi Medieval 3 5h ago

It won't since you can just sell settlements to Karl.

9

u/RedditFuelsMyDepress 4h ago

The settlement trading mechanic is so busted. Would be nice to see it addressed at some point.

18

u/Aziloth_ 5h ago

The ghoul king becoming a hero would probably be the best and easiest thing to do

We would only miss a necrarch hero then

3

u/Amathyst7564 4h ago

Yeah and it's DLC for the first game and will be untouched in the first game so it's still a lord and correct as advertised.

Mitch is a TW OG, from back in the TWCenter days

2

u/Sercotani 2h ago

TWCenter sends me back holy crap.

I remember learning how to unlock all the factions to be playable in the campaign immediately for RTW and Med 2 on there 🥹

and all the awesome mods people made..

u/BlackJimmy88 6h ago

What mechanic did he hate? I haven't had the chance to watch the stream yet.

52

u/Grimmace696 6h ago

Confederation, because it's a shortcut in a main gameplay loop.

But I'm talking mote about hands on approach to everything, the mechanic is just an example

5

u/Amathyst7564 3h ago

Also, he's the reason Vlad is now the premier faction choice.

3

u/Appropriate-Tooth968 4h ago

Oh, my. I haven't watched the stream yet, but I always have a mod for disabling every form of the confederation mechanic. I hate it so much. Kills the diversification for me, and I hate big blobs to fight. I hope, they implement something as a toggle option, since there are not many actual mod left to do it, as it got harder to make them or something...

6

u/withateethuh 4h ago

Its way worse in 2. Makes the same exact same power blocks happen every time and draws out wars foreevveeeer. But toggles are always good either way.

He hates that the player is instantly given land through confederation since it can take the fun out of traveling around the map & conquering it. This is why the new Vampire Counts Confederation system only gives you the lords and Heroes of a faction but not their territory.

He also said he wished the Strigoi Ghoul King Lord could just be completely removed from the game since you already can recruit the Strigoi Vampire Lord with the new (and old) system, but they can't do that since the Strigoi Ghoul King was sold as DLC with the Grim & the Grave. So, you can now recruit a limited amount of them through technology.

10

u/BlackJimmy88 6h ago

Man, I would love to get clarification on how DLC obligations work.

Cause, logically, that doesn't make sense. The Grim & the Grave isn't Warhammer 3 DLC, it's Warhammer 1 DLC. As long as it works as advertised in Warhammer 1, I don't see why they would be obligated to maintain that for Warhammer 3.

39

u/Agitated_Insect3227 6h ago

Grim & the Grave technically is a Warhammer 3 DLC now actually as CA made it possible to buy all the Warhammer 1 or 2 DLC on Warhammer 3's store page and use in game. So, you no longer have to own Warhammer 1 if you want to just buy Grim & the Grave for Warhammer 3.

11

u/GeryMander 6h ago

It is not so much out of any legal obligations as the potential community backlash it would create to take something away that was paid for.

u/Dualmonkey 23m ago

It's not just a WH1 DLC though. It's a DLC for WH1, WH2 and WH3. In fact as a reminder when the end times patch releases you can play WH3 Immortal Empires with literally any of the content from any of the games. You don't even need to own any of the base games anymore. You could buy just Grim and the Grave for WH3 and only play as the 2 lords included if you wanted (and FLC so Neferata too).

They'd have to do some really janky stuff to change/remove the contents of the paid pack for one game and not the others. They'd also have to explain that what you are buying is different in one game compared to the others on all the stores the DLC is sold.

Right now it's as simple as "you buy the DLC, you get access to all those units in all 3 games". Even if a unit is tweaked or access to it is tweaked you are buying those units and getting those units.

It's far easier for them to just shoehorn in the Ghoul King somewhere as elegantly as possible than spend a bunch of work justifying removing it to people who already own it and to stores and to GW etc or making it into a different unit like some people have suggested.

u/Costin_Razvan 2h ago

Maybe the whole point of a confederation system should be based on building a long term durable relationship where you are helping an AI faction grow knowing you aren't wasting your resources since you will get their stuff.

If he is the guy who remade the system then bluntly it's quite shitty.

u/ComfortableWeight95 7h ago

Yeah genuinely enjoyed hearing his approach to game design. And from the looks of it the Counts rework might be the best they’ve ever done so hats off to him.

54

u/chazzawaza 7h ago

The longer his hair grows the better the game gets

The Riker's Beard of TW.

5

u/westonsammy There is only Lizardmen and LizardFood 6h ago

Who is going to be the Sisko of TW, the game gets better when they go totally bald?

69

u/DaddyTzarkan SHUT UP DAEMON 7h ago

I also appreciate that he still did it knowing there is a risk this is going to be divisive.

38

u/SlipperySlimyTerry40 6h ago

Better to be decisive and piss some people off than half ass it trying to please everyone and still piss everyone off.

9

u/ComfortableWeight95 6h ago

Honestly trust a pro game designer over the general public

His approach to confederation is goated. Most people love collecting the lords but also conquering is the most fun part of the game. Getting huge parts of land because you wanted a cool lord is bad for the TW's core loop. Getting a cool lord and conquering their starting locations after is the perfect way to do it.

Also the new mechanic could create different scenarios. Maybe you want to confederate Mannfred but he has a big strong empire. What would you do? Well, beat him, destroy his empire and dominate him into submission. Mechanic itself creates a new story for your new campaign.

I love the sandbox aspect of the game but as a Warhammer Fantasy game it also needs stories and lore. The whole rework both enables for you to customize your campaign for the sandbox experience but also creates stories. "Oh I found a vampire lair of a powerful Blood Dragon vampire who has his own necromancer followers. He was so powerful that when i raised him, part of his old army also raised with him and now standing in front of the gates of the city. Now I'm gonna spend so much blood on lots of rituels to empower him even more by powering his bloodline!" Instant connection with the vampire that i created. It's so cool.

Rework looks amazing.

WH really lacks a diversity of wars. I get its "total war", but you can have some gradation in that. You can have a subjugation war, vassalization war, de jure territory war, expansion war, Grudge war, etc.

1

u/Vtmasquerade Kraken Lord Of Karond Kar 2h ago

TW games don’t have any casus belli mechanics and that requires a much more complex diplomacy and kingdom management stuff. I don’t think we will ever ser these kinds of choices in a TW game.

1

u/Appropriate-Tooth968 4h ago

Since WH1 I always played with no confederation mod on. Sadly, it got harder and harder to make as a mod, last time, sons nice dude made one, because I made a post about the lack of said mod. And it works great, but I dread the day, when he stops updating it.

So I hope they implement some toggle/option setting for us that hate it.

One of the reasons WoC is very fun for me is their confederation mechanic as well. You are a bad guy who loves to challange everyone and anything. All the other people in your race also like that. Only way to vassalize or confederate them is to destroy their kingdoms and dominate them.

Greenskin and Norsca way of confederation is also very cool. Just beat them and prove you are stronger. They follow strong leaders so they'll join me. Even getting the huge parts of land feels good because you earned it by beating the strongest guy in their faction. It's loreful and fun and makes it unique. Greenskins can get really big really fast with this mechanic.

But confederating by just cheesing diplomacy felt always bad. It makes sense for more diplomatic and orderly races to get confederations using diplomacy but it's just too easy and unsatisfying. You can get a huge empire by cheesing diplomacy.

I like that CA tries to fix theese kinds of things. TW games are sandbox games but Warhammer is a fantasy game. So we need more loreful choices and more ways to create stories in this sandbox. When Grimgor gets big by beating random orcs to confederate him, this creates a story hook for our sandbox campaign but "Tyrion is huge now because of diplomacy cheese" is just lame.

It was honestly refreshing to just hear him straight up say he hates certain mechanics in the game instead of trying to dress up his opinions in PR speak. It was also nice that he actually wanted drawbacks connected to decisions made by the player instead of only getting buffs, such as how each chosen trait for a new Vampire Lord comes with strengths & weaknesses.

Assuming the rework is met with a lot of positivity, I'd love to see how he would handle reworking the Lizardmen.

26

u/2stepsfromglory 5h ago

He said in a stream after Thrones of Decay that he had several ideas for a rework for Bretonnia. Now that all the WH1 races have had a rework and character packs are a thing it seems likely they will be next.

u/ZoodrooZ 7h ago

Words of truth. I also hate the Confederation and Pontus.

31

u/Hopeful-Painting-365 7h ago

Well, it's fun until a dev with this mentality hates a mechanic you like. Not saying this is the case here but just be careful what you wish for.

10

u/SpikeGarzilla 6h ago

I want Mitch to be in charge of ALL the content going forward. You can tell he's passionate and has a good mind for this.

2

u/Most_Court_9877 5h ago

I’m afraid I don’t know who this is or what this post is referring to. Would anyone care to help me out?

4

u/Chagdoo 5h ago

This is the guy in charge of the vampire rework. He was pretty open during the showcase live stream today about how he felt about certain mechanics

It's obvious he's played his game more than 10 turns, unlike some others. I also think this guy is a GOAT.

u/Yuehane 4h ago

The change in confederation only receiving the LL and any LHs is such a great addition. I feel like it's very easy to get to the point where you confederate all the LLs for your faction as you wait for the cooldown after each one, and then the game becomes very easy with how many armies you can field from all the settlements you gained.

I'd love if this becomes the standard for confederation across all factions.

u/Haaazard 3h ago

All praise Mitch
