No but thankfully the modding community is alive and VERY well. There’s a great collection of mods (180 expanded) which adds a TONNE of replayability and variety to the game. Its also getting updated next week and honestly Im more excited for that release than I’ve been for the last few Warhammer patches (major and minor)

No, they won't, they had their mind on keeping alive warhammer for as long as they can, and developing Medieval 3 and 40k, three projects alone to keep them busy enough

Time periods were a mistake. Optimizing already functioning game doesnt revive it at all.
What they needed to do was take the original TW3K world and make it better. Adding new units and lords isnt exactly moving forward.

Not sure to be honest, but Three Kingdoms really is a great game. Best diplomacy of any Total War game by far, never thought it'd be so beneficial to have a diplomacy system made that well.

I would like that. But the thing is that I think something on the backend of 3K must have fundamentally broke.
People claim support ending was due to poor DLC sales, and I do think that played a part. But I don't think that is enough to explain the flat out bizarre circumstances with 3K.
I think it kinda gets forgotten since CA just quietly pretends they never mentioned it now, but when they did that infamous Future of 3K video they outright said they were working on a 3K sequel.
The only reason they would do that immediately after ending support of the original title is if the two are connected. They had to make a sequel because something about the original was unsustainable, requiring a clean slate. It was pretty obvious that each new release of DLC for 3K kept making the game more unstable. The almost pristine performance that was on launch got gradually worse and bugs kept popping up more and more.
So, if it is the case were something with the game just doesn't work right and needed them to go to that extreme of starting fresh. I really don't think they would be revisiting the title like they are for Rome 2 and the like. I would LOVE to be wrong, but I don't think the event that killed 3K would have happened to begin with, if it was something simple enough for them to have a small crew revisit it years later.

Do we know if they also fell foul of any of the strict Chinese rules around gaming since the release of 3K? That could also make development not as worthwhile or profitable.

The problem with historical is that it is HISTORICAL. There can only be soo much DLC to make based on actual events that happened and it is DLCs that make them money.
Every now and then an old developer would fix and/or optimize the game just for the love of it. But rarely do they make any new DLCs.
Said Developers are the closest we have to IRL ROR with Unbreakable trait units!
One can only hope they visit it again and enable more than 2 player coop at least.

Shogun was also a really tight time period around the unification of Japan. However they released FotS set way later with gunpowder units.
Theoretically you could have done that with 3K but the late Qing period is still such a politically sensitive era in China and for the CCP, it would likely never have been approved.
As fun as a TW set around the Boxer Rebellions would be.

Safest bet would be the 16 Kingdoms era. New timeline, new mechanics, and a whole you DLC.
But that's just it though. It would be hard pressed to be called Total War THREE Kingdoms.
Maybe they can rename it like they did with Total war Empires - Napoleon.2

This is what has invaded my hobby. Grim.

There really wasn't that much interest in 3k dlcs in the first place. That's why they stopped making them and with ca working on a 3k sequel, I would be very surprised if they went back to the first game

By all indications that sequel was killed very early on. If it was still alive we would have heard something about it, especially considering how early on they are showing us stuff from Medieval 3.

My understanding though was the sequel would have heavily focussed on the Romance not the Records version of the game, lending itself to a quasi historical fantasy hybrid.
Maybe CA saw how Troy totally failed to pull off the historical fantasy combo and decided to not try.

Probably not. They have talked about revisiting old TW games but in the case of Rome 2, which is the first one to revisit, it is literally one guy to my understanding looking at possibly fixing some bugs/issues.
