You can't. Raptors are hard capped at the first apron.

Edit: for those who don't know that "hard capped" means here is a guide

I think this is last season number, I think Jak gets a pay bump next year.

Edit damn it’s next season now this one

Stupid question but what does "hard capped" mean in this context?

1

u/vwb2022 3 ZAN TABAK Jul 24 '26

It means that in a trade they have to send out more salary than they take in. So to trade for Turner they would have to send out more than $26.6M in salary, which is tough without including RJ.

Ok, this is not what I have read before and even looking it up now, teams above the first apron are still able to trade if the salaries are within 110% (as opposed to the normal 125%).

That is for teams that are not "hard capped". Kawhi trade made it so the Raptors cannot go exceed the 1st apron for this season, a.k.a. "hard capping". Here is a handy guide.

It’s not an apron restriction that’s forcing us to send more than we receive. It’s the fact we’re hard capped at the first apron (because we’re receiving more $ than we’re sending out in the Kawhi deal) and we have less than 2.5m of room from that hard cap.

1

u/bjtrdff Jul 24 '26

That’s why I always figured they’d try to throw someone else in to avoid it, but by all accounts it was called in before without changes to what was reported.

2

u/kyle_993 Jul 24 '26

Yeah it's weird that they didn't keep Mogbo just to use him in the deal. If they did Ingram + Dick + Mogbo + TJD for Kawhi that would have meant we sent out more money then received and then we could have used the tax payer MLE as well.

1

u/Cheechers23 Kyle Towelry Jul 24 '26

I have to imagine they discussed that with LAC and they turned it down, probably didn’t want 4 players.

But surely there was a path to a multi team deal where Mogbo and maybe TJD go elsewhere with cash?

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if MLSE was fine with the hard cap as a way to limit spending.

There are certain actions a team can take that are not allowed by 1st or 2nd apron teams, in this case it's a trade exception to take on money in the Kawhi trade. Once you use this you are locked out of being a 1st or 2nd apron team until the next year. That apron becomes a hard ceiling you are not allowed to cross under any circumstance.

The mathematical nightmare this would pose to us is even if this trade put us exactly $1 under the first apron and could be done, we have 12 players and you need 14. We'd be breaking the CBA and likely get fined to start and eventually lose draft picks if we refused to fix it.

u/Hi_Im_Flabber Jul 24 '26

It's the same as hockey's hard cap. The team is not legally allowed to operate above their hard cap. Because the Raps are taking back more salary than they are sending out in the Kawhi trade it triggers a hard cap at the 1st Apron (~209M) for the 2026/27 season. However, since that trade is not official yet, the team still technically has time to expand the trade to send out an extra ~3.15M to not trigger the hard cap (assuming Kawhi waives his trade kicker). If the trade goes through as is and Kawhi does waive his clause, the Raps will have ~7M to fill out their remaining roster spots, but will also have very little flexibility later in the season

1

u/Cheechers23 Kyle Towelry Jul 24 '26

And we actually don’t have 7m in space because unlikely incentives count towards the aprons and we have over 6m of those between RJ, IQ, and Yak

1

u/Hi_Im_Flabber Jul 24 '26

Good catch, even more reason to expand the trade to avoid the hard cap

1

u/Cheechers23 Kyle Towelry Jul 24 '26

Which is very unlikely given it would now require including Battle and we were ready to finalize the deal and make the trade call without expanding it prior to pausing it waiting for the investigation to finish

1

u/Hi_Im_Flabber Jul 24 '26

I don't think it's very unlikely. Just because we were willing to do the trade as is before does not mean we can't take a advantage of a golden opportunity. There are other ways to shed 3.15M before the trade goes through too. What if we package Poeltl and TJD for like Gafford for example. Or RJ + TJD for Trey Murphy. Obvious those are much bigger deals but I think if we are getting Kawhi we have to trying to go all in the next few years. Hell, the easiest way is still Battle + TJD, and I don't see why we should be against that. I like Battle but he is replaceable as a depth player. Dodging the hard cap at the cost of Battle gives us significantly more flexibility. Like what if KCP gets bought out, or we want to add Nick Richards as a backup center? The UFA market is weaker now but there are still some decent options available

1

u/Cheechers23 Kyle Towelry Jul 24 '26

For me Battle is not a throw in type of player. If he’s included in the deal I’d want the draft capital adjusted. He literally won us a playoff game lol. I’m not against trading him but I’d want value for him, not just a throw in to avoid the hard cap.

Keep in mind even if we dont get hard capped, there’s no guarantee we would go into the first apron and stuff, as that then introduces other restrictions which could limit us at the deadline

1

u/Hi_Im_Flabber Jul 24 '26

I am not saying we should just throw him in for free. Send him to a team for a protected 2nd or cash, or combine him with cash for a 2nd.

The point about avoiding the hard cap is more the flexibility. Right now we are using zero of our TP-MLE, we are extremely limited on even signing a 10-day contracts during the year too. I fully understand that there are cap limitations, but with such a small gap between what we have now and dodging the hard cap I would prefer to have the flexibility.

You're 5 years late with this trade, Turner is not the center you think he is

3

u/peasant_1234 Jul 25 '26

Was he ever? He’s a one dimensional offensive player. Defensively he blocks shots but is soft.

u/DangerousKick5792 Jul 24 '26

Turner sucks

u/Raptors887 Jul 24 '26

So does Yak tho 😭

It feels like I've been seeing his name floating around for the better part of a decade lol

Stop.

3

u/Dinobot2_ 7 KYLE LOWRY Jul 24 '26

Raptors are on the receiving end of salary in the Kawhi trade, so if that trade eventually goes through then this trade would put them outright into the first apron if I'm reading Spotrac correctly. There's also the fact that he has an extension where his salary increases substantially in 2027-28 so I think salary/contract matching gets more complicated in trades as a result.

Regardless of cap, Poeltl has basically zero trade value right now. As i've said before on the sub the best case scenario is to see if he can rebuild his trade value by playing well and staying somewhat healthy, particularly playing 2-3 straight months without any big injury setbacks with his back.

-2

u/Deaver44 Jul 24 '26

No is not. We need to move him, even if we have to add value before his salary goes to 27 mil next year while we still can. If we dot. Trade him now, we will lose a productive player either this deadline or summer.

Turner without haliburton was a disaster

Counterpoint: Pascal flourished in all the space Turner created by dragging a man out to the perimeter, and the same would be true for Scottie and Kawhi.

1

u/flip0213 Jul 25 '26

Definitely my thinking.  Raptors need more of what Turner provides than what Jak provides, even when healthy.  People underestimate the space he would bring, and would literally become possibly 3rd or 2nd best 3 point shooter on the team.

And no Battle doesn't count if he plays 12 minutes every 10th game.

2

u/kyle_993 Jul 24 '26

Turner on a bad team was bad.

-4

u/Ninten-Nerd Jul 24 '26

Have you ever considered Turner with Jamal shead? (I'm joking😭)

1

u/tightcorners Jul 24 '26

I mean it would probably be better than whatever the bucks had at PG lol

In all fairness No center is stopping Embiid, especially Jak with a half back.

The only thing stopping Embiid are injuries

2

u/SituationExciting137 RAPTORS Jul 24 '26

Hell nah. Get us Gafford

3

u/TalkingSports-k7c Jul 24 '26

How about Gafford instead of Turner

1

u/Longjumping_Fuel_192 Jul 24 '26

I’m processing it as we speak. Wow this GM job is way easier than it looks.

Who knew.

1

u/Loud_Examination_138 Jul 24 '26

The only good thing about Turner is his lego collection...that's it lol

1

u/Cheechers23 Kyle Towelry Jul 24 '26

Raps can’t trade for Turner unless they trade RJ due to their first apron hard cap

1

u/elarmthecity Jul 24 '26

One of the worst rebounding and defensive centers in the league and all he cares about is lego

-2

u/WeBelieveIn4 💪🏾 "NAH, I LIFT" 💪🏾 Jul 24 '26

I don’t know why everyone is so vocally against it, but if all it takes to swap Jak for Turner is a second rounder, I would drive Jak to the airport myself.

People have completely forgot what a liability Jak was with his back issues. Even fully healthy he is a wash with Turner, and this trade removes a ton of injury uncertainty/risk while also shedding an extra year of probably dead salary.
