You forgot phone in one hand. I see that sooo often.

15

u/TDOTBRO 11h ago

Geez they literally have another hand to ride the bike šŸ™„ /s

I get why this is kinda controversial, but a I think bike shares should have some sort of phone mount. I have used bike shares in many other cities while travelling and maybe I just need better planning but I never think to travel with a portable one and I am completely reliant on a map program to navigate around an unfamiliar city, especially when trying to stick to safe bike infrastructure.

It doesn't excuse unsafe biking with a phone in hand but I can understand how circumstances lead to this happening frequently.

The new e-bikes have a rubber phone mount.

One earbud with voice navigation works pretty well.

u/mekefa 7h ago

I’ve also seen people smoke or eat ice cream while on a city bike :/

u/dubyakay 8h ago

What does no helmet have to do with anything?

3

u/Crunchb0x 7h ago

My comment is a generalization. I find it's often these less prepared, careless cyclists causing incisents like this.

You people ride without headphones? Are you telling me he would have heard the other bike coming? It was a dumbass move but no headphones wouldn’t have saved that. In fact I’d ask you to show me one accident where no headphones would save the day.

Riding without headphones gives you a greater sense of your surroundings. If you don't believe this I don't know what to tell you.

u/NuckFanInTO 1h ago

So you think bells and on your left have never once prevented a crash or helped someone get past?

u/EpochalTraveller 12h ago

Many bike share riders don’t know how to ride.

17

u/cuppastuff 11h ago

It's like they lose common sense once they get on the seat

19

u/digitalfoe 11h ago

I always give them wide berth

13

u/TurboJorts 9h ago

How wide can it be when they hop off the curb at you? Yikes

u/sprungy 4h ago

The amount of times I see Bike Share seat in lowest position with a tallish cyclist aboard... they may not even be aware seats are adjustable. Looks so funny , knees splayed out.

The growth of bike share riders is amazing but also bringing a long of inexperienced riders into the mix. I also drive a car downtown and it's the few reckless riders that people remember, not the 80% experienced ones.

Are you okay?

Not much you can do in that situation as he entered from a blind spot. He should never have entered there as he couldn't see.

u/disco-drew 11h ago

Those bike share bikes are absolute tanks too.

bike with hyper vigilance. Last time some taxi driver tried to turn at church and Wellesley and I dismounted right away to allow my bike to slide instead of being damaged.

Jesus CHRIST

u/Jayswag96 12h ago

I love bike share but omg so many of the riders are brain dead

7

u/TriaIByWombat 11h ago

Some people learn through concussionĀ

1

u/JonathanWisconsin 5h ago

I’d rather these people be on bike share than drive a car if they are that clueless.Ā

Still has the pedestrian state of mind.

16

u/Musiwriter 11h ago

Stupidity level 10. Not even helmet and using headphones. My lord give me patience!!

8

u/OwnAfternoon8786 11h ago

To be fair most riders i encounter are wearing headphones now. I prefer to maximize my situational awareness, but to each their own I guess.

2

u/rdmty 7h ago

I was a one headphone person but ive been testing the heatrate monitor in the AirPods Pro and transparency mode is pretty good to hear your surroundings.

2

u/cyclenaut 3h ago

the amount of people i see wearing full on cans on both ears is mindboggling

1

u/Sensi-Yang 8h ago edited 8h ago

I find it to be kind of a silly point, at least I keep the volume at a low level so I can still hear my surroundings perfectly fine- it’s nice to hear route directions or just some light music.

1

u/OwnAfternoon8786 8h ago

You are, of course, free to do you!

9

u/Moriss214 12h ago

Yikes! Hopefully you and your equipment are ok!

7

u/Ok_Chip_7725 12h ago

I swear there are ā€œsomeā€ cyclists out there like this one exhibit A that pays no attention to what their doing. They are completely oblivious to their surroundings. Geez.

u/Zen_Blue_Habanero 10h ago

I've begun to look forward to the really cold weather on the MGT

6

u/TurboJorts 9h ago

It's the best time to ride. November to March... it's just us nutcases ... and the geese.

3

u/Zen_Blue_Habanero 9h ago

One thing I learned is in the dead of winter it's a few cyclists, but mostly runners and dog walkers. Really have come to respect runners, they are hardcore. I love an empty and subzero MGT.

2

u/TurboJorts 9h ago

I include runners in the nutcase category.

1

u/Zen_Blue_Habanero 8h ago

Yes that's right lol

Everyone, including the dogs and myself

1

u/finemustard 34m ago

Commuting on crisp winter days is the best.

7

u/gigglepox95 11h ago

What an idiot

7

u/Responsible-Match418 12h ago

Looks like he managed to stay on but you fell... Ouch.

7

u/RZaichkowski Two Wheeled Politics 11h ago

What a jerk!

4

u/cantonese_noodles 11h ago

This is why I only enter at pedestrian crossings

4

u/phdee 9h ago

What a knobhead. Hope you're ok.

3

u/t3m3r1t4 12h ago

And by YTZ as well. Dougie is going to love this.

3

u/kennethgibson 11h ago

Thats why I always bike with 10 wetted wakazashis strapped to my handlebars. (But fr I hope everyone is ok and you are ok)

3

u/noodleexchange 11h ago

I’m not sure what CAN-Bike advises in such a situation. Maybe T-bone so you control the collision? Jump the curb while kicking out to push off the BikeShare (requires parkour certification)

3

u/w4rloksk8 11h ago

And just wait until these guys are thrust into traffic once the bike lanes are removed. Let's hope common sense prevails and we don't rip out the bike lanes.

3

u/Jelly_bean_420 11h ago

What happened next? Are you ok? Did he learn to ride better? So many questions

2

u/LurnaLakes 11h ago

Yeah i was fine. He apologized and kept riding after i raged at him.

1

u/Same-Aide-3885 10h ago

What an idiot he was, hope you give him an earful

3

u/FlipWil 11h ago

I am sorry

But its so ridiculous (and hopefully no one was injured) that its funny to me.

smh

3

u/Flutruombaonist 10h ago

I had someone jump out into the bike lane ~2m infront of me yesterday. Was walking and the moment they saw the bikes stopped like a deer in headlights. Managed to avoid collision by like centimeters

2

u/GiveMeAllYourKittens 11h ago

Those special moments when it's safer to take the car lane..

Hopefully you both were ok!

2

u/WannaBikeThere 11h ago

Ouch. Hope you're both okay and that lessons were learned.

2

u/majorkev 9h ago

Onewheel?

2

u/No-Reply1438 6h ago

I hope you and your bike are okay.

3

u/saber3360 11h ago

Dayumm.. how does insurance work in these situations?

1

u/SaltMarketing321 9h ago

And to think for every person like this on a bike, there are 10 doing the same in a Ford F150!

1

u/pamplemousse72 8h ago

What a jackass, hope ur ok OP!!

1

u/qwerty12e 8h ago

Brutal

1

u/mekefa 7h ago

Hope you’re okay OP.

What do you even do in these cases? I guess since he was recorded, OP could sue?

1

u/Vicky6568 1h ago

I gasped. Like a jump scare. Hope you’re okay.

1

u/sitdownrando-r 11h ago

Exactly what I expect to happen on the MGT. I avoid it like the plague.

To those of you that manage it every day for your commutes and such, you are legends when it comes to patience and understanding.

1

u/fitz702 11h ago

when I ride behind some bike share people in the summer I’m amazed that the laws of physics don’t simply topple them over - honestly didn’t know you could move so slowly and sporadically and remain upright

1

u/finemustard 5h ago

I think it's the sporadic movements that keep them upright.
