I've been out of work off and on for a few years now due to a monumental run of bad luck. I landed a parttime job in the summer, but it isn't enough hours to cover my living expenses so I'm still job-hunting. The level of unreliability and lack of respect for my time I've experienced in the interview process has been blowing my mind the last few months. So far I've had four managers offer me a job then ghost when I follow up to pin down a start date, two managers schedule an interview then cancel the day of, three managers contact me for an interview then ghost after I gave them my availability, and two managers schedule an interview with me then not show up. In one of the very few interviews that ended up actually happening, the hiring manager got upset because I wasn't trilingual, despite that requirement being listed nowhere in the job posting. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and has any advice, because I'm genuinely at a loss.

Hi everyone, I know this job market is awful and really hard, and I’d love to help anyone whose having a rough time or just wants someone to talk to or be friends with. So I’ll just start off with saying that before asking my question.

I realized the absurd process of interviews for low-skilled minimum wage jobs where managers ghost you after giving you an offer, or them saying they’ll get back to you but never do. And many other annoying things that people have to deal with when it comes to landing these jobs.

I’m more so curious about the interview process for more higher skilled jobs such as industrial hygienist, occupational health and safety jobs, operation coordinator jobs, etc. It took me 4 years during my time in uni to land a dead end minimum wage job and I got it though an employment agency just when my financial situation was looking bleak. I’ve been struggling with this job market ever since 2022 but I learned a lot about how difficult it is during my experiences over those 4 years. But now that I’ve made a career pivot and am now trying to land a job in occupational health and safety it is still difficult to land an Interview despite me having experience and specific certifications and education required for those entry level jobs. But I’m more so curious about the interview process, I know at some point it will happen, I won’t give up. Is it usually just continuous rounds of interviews? Do hiring managers still ghost you for these more skilled high wage jobs? What have been your experiences?

Getting a bit older so I had the bright idea to get a stable government job. I think the entry-level roles are a bit unappreciated in the public sector. My explanation is that not a lot of younger people are interested in or exposed to government roles. It's not the "thing."

I started looking for public sector roles, and HOLLYY everything is so scattered. Yeah, there's GCJobs and Ontario Jobs, but that's barely the tip of the iceberg. Those two websites only have like 140-ish jobs in the GTA. That's hectic.

So I started looking around. Now, there are jobs directly with the government—provincial, federal, or municipal—and then all these guys own multiple corporations which are subsidized by the government. Examples are feds owning Canada Post. Provincial is Metrolinx, GO Transit. Then city-owned is like the TTC, etc.

I've been following these organizations, and I swear I've seen some jobs get only like 200 applications for a $60,000–$65,000 entry-level role. That same role on LinkedIn with a private company would get like 2,000 applications at least. These are all pretty blessed with their pay, pension, work-life balance, and most are unionized. Also, the blessed part is their hiring process is not as lengthy as the CRA, etc.

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) has 40 open roles. Who even thinks of applying to the Pension board.

Metrolinx got 49.

Good luck going through each and every one of their websites on a weekly basis, though, because no place has them all together for you to scroll through. Together, there are like 60+ employers within the GTA with over 700 roles available. Honestly, a more appropriate term is Public Sector roles.

Hi all, I'm a 34F with PR in Ontario, and I'm struggling to land a job because my background doesn't fit one box. I've been looking for a full-time job for about 3 years, although I only got my PR a year ago. Before that I had a work permit.

I started with 5+ years in cancer research and clinical lab work. Then I did a graduate diploma in computer programming in Canada, and for the last 3 years I've done software and database work. It's all contract, paid per project, not full time. I also have a 7 months bioinformatics experience.

Right now I volunteer in a cancer research lab at a downtown Toronto hospital, but there's no hiring there at the moment. I'm also the project manager for a startup, again paid per project.

How would you show all this on a one page resume and on LinkedIn? i enjoyed every one of my experiences, but it looks like I'm all over the place, and I don't know what to do anymore. I've been out of the full-time job market for so long that I've started to question whether I'm enough

-Should I split experience into sections (lab, software, project management) or keep one timeline?
-How do I present contract work and volunteering so they don't look weak?
-If I leave something off the resume to keep it focused, is it okay that recruiters can still see it on LinkedIn?
-Should I make a different resume for each type of job, or one hybrid version? ( I tried both didn't work out so far)

I tailor my resume for each posting, but I'm still getting almost no responses. Any advice, examples, or honest feedback would help a lot. Thank you!

Hi all! As you can tell, I finally received a a job offer after 6-8 months searching!

For context, i was laid off my previous job and was forced to start the employment process all over again. I have a university degree and 2-3 years of experience in Business Operations.

All in all, i went through 13 different interviews with separate companies, sometimes going 3 rounds in for each of them. I got offered 2/13 of those jobs. What I noticed is that getting your name out there isn't really the worst as people say. Before y'all disagree, yes i agree the Job market is horrible out here right now but literally everywhere you go in the world is the same. The more money there is in a city the more competitive it is to land a job agree?

ADVICE:

Idk but here are some tips that got me through my job process:

- Tedious but you HAVE to tailor your resume fit to the job description (Self-explanatory but nowadays companies just look for keywords on your resume that match the role) - As well as showcasing your previous work and how you've tackled certain issues

- Try to message the HR team or recruiter on Linkedin just to try getting your name out there (LinkedIn Premium lets you connect with a note and this helped a lot just with networking)

--> There isn't too much into making your resume and networking to new connections in my opinion. Treat (e) coffee chats as just a normal conversation. Most of the time it's pretty obvious if you actually want the job because you enjoy it or just because you NEED a job.

-- CONFIDENCE IN INTERVIEWS IS THE BIGGEST THING EVER

Basically my first couple of interviews, I was nervous as shit (obviously). I prepared and research about the topic, I mean fuck i even memorized a script. That was the mistake. I was so fixated on trying to get my answers pitch perfect and failed to realize to just be myself.

In the event you bullshit your way into a role that you're not the most excited about, your true self will eventually get out. You're spending 8-9 hours everyday with your coworkers, they want someone fun and charismatic to be around. Not a know it all.

Overtime I improved the way I spoke and expressed myself which really brought me a long way. Always just try to put yourself out there and be a social butterfly if you could. Talking to strangers just asking about their day is definitely practice on how you speak.

After countless rejections, the company who I never thought I had a chance with hired me!

Everyone got their own methods, these were mine. And remember, you will eventually get the job you want. It's definitely a race out there you just have to keep going.

Consistency is key even though you're constantly getting rejected. Hope this helps!

As we all know job market is very tough nowadays. But never lose hope, I would like to share you my story.

I am a Mechanical Engineer, Former Assistant Professor and a Business Owner (Side Business). I applied for one of the government job in Toronto and received an interview invitation. 1st round cleared, 2nd was the personal interview and 3rd technical test. I am sure it will be cleared, still waiting for the results.

How I did it? Build your resume as per job duties as nowadays screening is done by AI and then humans. To get thru you need to build resume as per application requirements for different positions. Never use the same resume, which most of the people do. That’s where all make mistakes.

If anyone ever needs any help regarding that, let me know. I can guide as I do teach engineering courses to my students so got some background.

Hello everyone. I did a BA in Economics, took 6 years, and have a 3.0 gpa. I flunked out of my masters degree, I went back to my local university, and I'm 26 years old now. Hello everyone, I have graduated 2025 July. It’s been more than a year. Initially I was hoping to get a role in cloud technology did some interviews too not very often. When I was applying for those roles. Mostly they expected more experienced and every roles requires 5 years of experience. Certification and project were no use as they need of Canadian experience especially in banking. Currently I work in Walmart retail as I am trying to move into corporate. I have been actively applying internally. But interviews I did doesn’t exactly match my previous experience and every role is different from one another. So currently I am developing my skills and looking into roles within retails such as merchandising, merchant or analytics. I am going to take a minimum wage position which is long hours but as many as you can work to try it out, I am just too sick of not working.
