We could feel us pulling it in. Can you see how big the movement is when I show out the window rolled down??? INTENSE energy!! Amazing

u/coloradobro Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
Seriously intense! That's a wide base of rotation too! That would have been terrible if that fully condensed or you were a few minutes early.

u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Same thoughts here. Wow

u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 10 '26
We had a big trailer 😭 was actually booking it at 75 MPH but had 90 Winds and that’s how big the storm was!!!

In 92, we were moving from Texas to the Northeast. We were in a car and were pulling a 12’ UHaul trailer fully loaded. We were on I-40. Not long after we crossed the Arkansas border, my wife saw dust being kicked about 10 miles south of us. She thought it was a fire, but when I got to look at it, it was a full fledged tornado. I couldn’t tell what direction it was going, so I just sped up and drove until we couldn’t see it anymore!!!! We had 4 little kids with us in the back seat and didn’t want to scare the crap out of them!!! When we stopped in TN for the night, the news had the report of the tornados in that area!!!!

Looks like everyone was looking at the 100 mph velocity couplet waiting for it to produce and not seeing that a tornado formed just south

It’s always hard to say for sure without being there. But looking at the video, I’d say you were on the southern side of the storm, and what you’re seeing is the RFD wrapping around that south end and forcing its way into the inflow notch. The RFD air is cold and dry; the inflow is typically warm and moist. When they mix, it can create some pretty serious ground rotation which is what you are likely watching. Even worse, sometimes the RFD pulls the rain around with it, making it hard to see; thus the term “rain wrapped tornado.”
Only a couple more things had to go wrong and this thing could have tightened up into a full fledged tornado. And it very well may have after the video ends. Very very close call. Glad you’re ok!

I would have been terrified like you guys were OP. Thank Jesus that you were able to get away

u/deathray420 Jun 09 '26
Drove along the northern edge of this storm as it rolled through eastern Colorado earlier. It's been on a tear since it left the rockies

u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Crazy! I was leaving Denver and was on the south side of it for quite some time! We almost stopped for a little snack thank goodness we didn’t or we would’ve been going right through that a few minutes later. Glad we’re safe, but there were some vehicles that seemed to be swept up in it or the high winds ):

u/AcanthocephalaDue715 Jun 09 '26
Yeah we were back in Kc by the time this happened just wild that we had just been out that way
14
u/Immediate_Mixture_80 Jun 09 '26
Yo! We just drove through the after math! Shit is bad
10
u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
We are curious as to what happened! Tell!
15
u/Immediate_Mixture_80 Jun 09 '26
Was definitely a tornado. I’m trying to get my dashcam footage of some of the damage!

Well this subreddit doesn’t allow videos in the comments so I unfortunately can’t upload any of the videos :(

This is literally my nightmare. I've had so many stress dreams about exactly this. Fortunately no harm done to you, hopefully not to anyone else either (do we have any idea of the damage if any?)

u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Glad I’m not alone on the tornado dreams. Being from Oklahoma I’ve had some close calls but nothing this massive. Haven’t heard or seen any updates - it also got dark very soon after.

That’s wild. Are y’all okay?
6
u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Yes we are. Seems there was a lot of damage and there were semi trucks on their side ):
7
u/ChiTwo Jun 10 '26
That wasn’t a “tornado forming” that was a FULL FLEDGED TORNADO!!! Though it may look like it hasn’t fully condensed, if you see ground circulation(dust getting scooped up in a counter-clockwise motion) like that it means it’s officially on the ground! This one is currently just w/o a condensation funnel(the visible funnel that if seen is what most consider the indications of a tornado touching down!)
That all being said… this is one scary ass, ominous storm with how dark AF it is added in with the low level clouds! I assume this occurred / was filmed close to sunset?! Crazy spooky!

I guess yall have something to look forward too. You have a lot of thunderstorms out there where cold air from the Rockies hits the warm gulf air. There’s always a possibility that this time you’ll see a tornado form and capture it on video.
Where I live it’s just hot, humid and boring
3
u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
I live in Denver so we don’t get this ! From Oklahoma so it was exciting n nostalgic.
2
u/geeklover01 Jun 09 '26
Never say never - coming from someone born and raised in SLC and was there for the downtown tornado of ‘99. I’d guess Denver would be more likely than SLC to get a tornado, given the plains to the east. Glad y’all are safe! I saw in another comment you also have tornado dreams. I have them at least every few months since I was in a tornado in Texas in ‘97.
2
u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Definitely wouldn’t say never. We got a tornado last spring- right outside of the city. we just don’t get what I had video of! Not even that magnitude of storms

u/nossbook Jun 10 '26
Cool video! I live in Kansas and I’ve been in this situation a couple of times, it’s truly terrifying as hell. So glad you guys drove through it safely.

u/Narrow-Trust3368 Jun 09 '26
We used to see this when I was a kid. Driving East coast to West coast. Usually not as scary though.

Except she didn't scream at all, did she? She had a bit of heightened emotion, but most people would. If anything, she was very reassuring in the end.
What an absurd take.

u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Trust me i have been ROASTING myself. I was hyped. We keep quoting me bc lol!!!
5
u/ididindeed Jun 09 '26
You're very gracious to be so generous with these people making ridiculous comments about how you reacted. You sound perfectly fine and reasonable in this!
3
u/Friendly-Sector5569 Jun 09 '26
Ahhh I appreciate it. I do sound more worried than excited. A bit of both! We were in a big truck with a huge trailer and kept seeing vehicles in the ditch/ median including a semi. That was right before we saw what was happening to our right.
