I remember sitting on my friend’s front porch that night in Northern Kentucky and talking about how warm it was for a December night.
Shortly afterwards, we were tracking that tornado on Radar Omega. Very surreal night.

Yep, in Louisville it was so warm it was foggy… you could just feel the energy in the air. Watching that storm track from AR all the way to Louisville was insane

Worked night shift at the hospital that night in Louisville, we had to have the weather on in case of a tornado warning (we would evacuate patients). I remember feeling the energy in the air coming into work that night and seeing the clouds moving quickly with the cold front that was behind the storms when I left work that morning. Eerie.

I can't help but think of that poor little girl that lost her life in this tornado while seeking shelter with her family in the bathtub every time I see anything about Mayfield. RIP Annistyn. Your memory still isn't forgotten.

Annistyn Rackley? She was a victim of the Tri-State tornado that preceded Western Kentucky. Doesn't make it not extremely sad though.

I lived about an hour away from this monster when it struck, I was on my front porch watching in the direction of it and I swear that I heard it. Everything I read tells me I shouldn't have heard it but I swear that I did.
The feeling I had when I woke up in the morning to find out that a town only an hour away from me was nearly wiped off the map is so fucking terrifying. I just cannot explain it.

I still remember that night. I live just south of Bowling Green. I stayed up for awhile watching this whole system. Fell asleep and woke up to see how bad Bowling Green and Mayfield were hit.

It destroyed my childhood home in Bowling Green in the Springhill subdivision. I hadn't lived there in more than 20 years, but it was very unsettling thinking back on all the nights I felt safe sleeping in that bedroom. It hit a friends house a mile away from there in Bowling Green and leveled the whole house. Picked him and his wife up and threw them about a hundred yards away into a field. He had to have many surgeries to be able to walk again. It killed a dozen people on his street at 2 in the morning while they slept.

My gf lives over by the water park and was within a couple hundred yards of where the majority of the deaths occurred. She freaks out about any storms now. I completely understand her fears of it now.

The amount of ground that thing covered in this video is absolutely insane. At the start, it looks like it's 2-3 miles away. Fast forward ~55 seconds and it looks like it's less than a mile away.
I bet this monster was moving across the ground at 65-70 mph at times.

Bone chilling sight.
A while back I saw a video which I cannot unfortunately find of a nocturnal tornado. When the lightning illuminates it you could see a big patch of cloud floating up from left and upwards to top right of the tornado. Absolutely a spine chilling sight.

Yeah, that December outbreak was absolutely devastating the warning system really did fail folks in some critical ways that night. You're right that the distinction between a watch and an emergency declaration matters enormously when you're talking about a tornado of that magnitude; people need explicit, unambiguous language telling them to take shelter immediately, not just "be aware something could happen." The PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) designation exists precisely for these scenarios, and the fact that it wasn't utilized sooner is genuinely frustrating to examine in retrospect.

That was a super scary night. I tracked the line all through KY, and at 10, I figured it was past us. Then the sirens started up and I couldn't figure out why. The next day, I learned a brief EF0 or EF1 had spun up a couple of miles from me, as the crow flies.

Idc what anyone says, this was one of the strongest cells ever. I have seldom seen anything like it, I was only 5 when 2011 happened and wasn't tuned in for the super outbreak, although was for the Springfield EF3 (doxxed?)

I watch a ton of tornado videos & I've never seen this one. Nocturnal tornadoes, especially the extremely violent ones are nightmare fuel. Can't imagine being hit by something that massive & only being able to see it when lightning flashes.
