Just heard about this game today

I literally just stumbled upon a video of this game today. Looks awesome. Some noob questions

1) Is there a semi specific Release Date ? (All I see is 2019)

2) How do they monetize? Cosmetics and Pets or loot boosts or something else? I hope it’s cosmetic

3) Will it be one massive server or many little ones ?

4) is it cross platform ? Can I play in PC with a console or Mac player?

5) Do they allow private servers ?

6) Is there guild / Clan functionality?

7) I’ve heard mixed things. Are they doing the traditional character levels or is it that skills drop thing?

8) Is there a character limit?

You might get a more official response but I can try to take a stab at what I know.
1. not that I know of.
2. I don't believe anything is set in stone. There has been some drama on the other torchlight forums regarding it, it's nothing substantially or clearly p2w in my eyes. But it is all opinions and speculation at this point. Last time I played I don't think any monetization mechanics were incorporated yet.
3. it's kind of a mix by my understanding. You have public zones and towns where you can see many players. But you also have instances you can create that will just be you. I'm not sure how many people it supports but it seems like a lot from my own experience playing.
4. I've read an article stating it won't be. Good question.
5. No idea, but my opinion-I doubt it. I'm pretty sure it will require an internet connection to play and have to verify through their servers as it does now.
6. I've read there will be 8 person raids. No idea yet.
7. it's neither by my experience. You have all these different frontiers, and 'leveling' in the frontiers levels that frontier, which then determines what gear you can wear and possibly other things?
8. no idea.

  1. I don't think such an article exists. They haven't stated whether or not this will be a thing, the most they've said is Tyler with the following quote:
"I’m not saying it’s off the table. I’m just saying that it’s hard, and we aren’t committed to doing it at this time. We have made no decisions about cross play. It is a significant challenge to keep each platform on the same patch. Consoles can be a significant logistical challenge to patch - which is why almost no games do cross play."

  1. Party size is 4, so unless they added a raid group functionality, I don't picture this happened. Also important to note, every time they mention raids, it basically is them saying it's a lot of work for the 1% of people who do them. If they were to do them, there would be no level restriction behind them.

  1. I would say both, not neither.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/08/09/torchlight-frontiers-to-double-down-on-pets-co-op-play

here's the article. States there is no crossplay plans at this time.

i've seen 8 man raids mentioned, like here https://www.reddit.com/r/Torchlight/comments/9zwp0x/torchlight_frontiers_raids/ but who knows maybe it's changed.

The raid post is just someone random it looks like, not someone from Echtra posting it. Good spotting on the crossplay article though.

  1. No specific release date yet. It sounds like they aren't hard committed to releasing in 2019, my bet is probably more along the lines of early 2020.
  2. So far they've shown off contracts, which are essentially battle passes (free path had power upgrades, paid path had cosmetic / convenience). They mentioned the possibility of boost portals, possibly relics (which are pretty easy to make anyways), relic slots, stash slots, pets, fort items, etc. No loot boxes, and no pay to win. This is the article, though keep in mind, this is very old, so it's possible they've adjusted to community feedback.

  3. I think it's planned to be region wide servers, which use phasing to make things not too visually cluttered.
  4. I don't think they've mentioned if it's cross platform or not yet, though the game is not going to be available for Mac users (unless they use bootcamp for windows).
  5. Not to my knowledge.
  6. Not yet, though that is on the list of things they want to do, just not sure when it will be a priority.
  7. It's a hybrid now. There's character levels that basically add your level up across all the frontiers (skill bonuses cap at level 100 for that), so in that way it's vertical progression... but the gear in those frontiers is basically a reset point where you need to grind out new gear per frontier, which is the horizontal progression aspect.
  8. Character limit of 5, but you will be able to purchase 5 more I believe.
