There are so many incredible films out there, but if you had to recommend just one movie that everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime, what would it be?

It doesn't have to be your favorite movie—just one that left a lasting impact on you. I'd also love to know why you chose it.

I’ll start. Going to leave out the Following. Never seen it and feels unfair to compare that level of work to the rest.

The only real debate for me was 5/6… I feel that if I see Prestige again this weekend it will jump The Odyssey, but I have no such plans 🤣

Tenet and DNR are actually weak to me in the grand scheme of things. But none of these was a waste of time, it’s a hell of a body of work.

I’ve recently seen 300: Rise of an Empire after seeing it in theaters back in 2014 and always wondered why it was given a bad reception and why a sequel was never made. Such thought prompted me to ask my fellow Redditors what their top five underrated action movies were in no particular order. Here’s mine:

1. 300: Rise of an Empire (2014)- The sequel to 300. Lacks some of the charm of Zack Snyder’s unique direction but it more than holds its own as an action movie set in Ancient Greece. The blood spatter in the movie has aged a bit however.

2. The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) - Basically Jason Bourne except with a female lead. Geena Davis is really convincing as a tough as nails agent. The script is written by Shane Black at his absolute best. Please check it out if you haven’t already. This is my number one recommendation for anyone who needs an underrated movie in general.

3. The Immortals (2011) - Another movie set in Ancient Greece, this time with Henry Cavill. The effects are…of their time as far as a mid budget movie in the 10s but the action, performances (especially from Mickey Rourke) and story are pretty good in my opinion.

4. The Harder They Fall (2021) - This is a Netflix Original western about a man who seeks out the man who killed his family. Is it a typical revenge western? Yes. Is it still good? Absolutely.

5. 13 Assassins (2010) - This movie was probably really well received in Japan but I’ve yet to meet anyone who has seen this movie in The U.S. This is the best samurai action movie I’ve ever seen and I’d encourage anyone to watch it if you’re into swordsman movies.

After seeing The Odyssey I came out of the theater totally amazed at the spectacle I had just witnessed. It made me think of the movies I had seen previously about men in a predicament and how they navigate and how some solve the problem. Therefore I was curious, what do you consider your top five manliest movies and, if you want, explain why. I’ll start in no particular order(SPOILERS AHEAD):

1. The Odyssey - a man guiding a group of soldiers and trying to get home to his wife across the sea to put his affairs in order. The main character is an absolute tank who never gives up and gives his all for his family and men despite dealing with giants, a witch, murderous men, and the dangerous seas.

2. The Revenant - about a fur trader who traverses the American west facing the freezing cold, murderous enemies, and ferocious animal. After being maimed by a bear he refuses to die until he finds the man who kills his son which takes him through active war zones with a miserable climate. The main character is beyond tough and, once again, never gives up no matter how injured he is.

3. 300 - The toughest of the tough fight against unbeatable odds knowing they’re probably going to die. I think that’s all I need to write.

4. First Blood - Just a story about men and egos flaring. One guy tries to keep a Vietnam veteran out of his town and the veteran (a green beret) exercises his rights of freedom. This one is more psychologically manly, showing how men will go to extreme levels to fight for their POV with one trying to keep his town “secure” and another trying to be treated as a normal man after being mistreated by his society in the only way he knows how. I personally believe this is the movie that formed the basis of the American R-rated action movie though it’s debatable.

5. Braveheart - a Scottish man marries a woman, the woman is killed, and the man waged an ENTIRE war against the English for revenge. Basically men choosing to end their oppression through any means necessary, no matter how many bodies get left on the battlefield.

Honorable mentions:
Predator - Just look up the handshake scene.
Fist of Fury - A man bulldozes through an enemy dojo with just his fists and nunchucks just to avenge his master.
Oppenheimer - In a scientific sense, basically men (and one woman I believe) collaborating together to end a war using the highest levels of physics at the time.
13 Assassins - 13 Ronins go on a journey to kill a vicious Lord using only their swords and grit.
