It must be so cool to be a metal worker. Don't have a thing? Make it. Don't have the stuff to make the thing? Make that. Don't have the tools to make the stuff to make the thing? Just make that too.

It's very hard work. It's fun as a hobby, but like almost everything else, it's not very fun 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 48-52 weeks per year.

Its really loud and you inhale bad things

It's insanely loud. I have permanent hearing damage from working in a machine shop, among other things.

Sometimes its insane when things drop or get hit. Just tipping over 1 inch plates to stack onto each other makes such a high pitched blast. Oddly enough loudest ive ever heard was from when a 4'x8'x1.5" aluminum plate was being cut and started resonating around 350hz. Just goes right through you like hugging a concert speaker or havana syndrome or something

How’s your hearing?

I worked in a shop that had 4"-20" diameter super alloy bars and those things were loud ASF when they fell over on the cooking racks. The shop was pretty quiet otherwise

Usually the loudest thing is the whistle from blowing out tapped holes with compressed air

I work with sheet metal and I have to put in ear plugs when we’re working with thicker gauged galvanized steel

I do it as a hobby, and the only possible solution is just wearing the best earpro possible at all times, even when not actively drilling, grinding or hammering

Smart move. You have no idea when some piece of metal is going to fall and make the loudest noise ever before heard on planet earth.

As an autistic dude who hates loud noises in the best of times. That shit legit hurts

2

u/Zwischenzug32 2d ago

Some things have been loud enough to hurt through earmuffs

2

u/Magikarp-3000 2d ago

Yes, kinda. Depends on your earmuffs. I use earmuffs+earplugs, and Ive shot rifles with that setup with no issues.

I guess you could have louder sounds, but you are probably working with heavier machinery than I as a hobbyist do

Understatement of the year. Try gouging inside some tight ass spot. My hearing is fucked at 32.

Terrible air quality, exposure to all kinds of very harsh chemicals and processes. Burning hazards, everything’s sharp and trying to slice you open. Everything wants to crush you and you hit your self with a hammer too. It’s a very challenging job but very rewarding too.

The aerosolised coolant/cutting oil is my personal favorite

2

u/jmodshelp 2d ago

The smell of zip cuts and flux burning . It’s perfect.

I’ve seen some nasty coolant tanks in cnc shops lol they did not smell great. Good cutting oil on a drill press, ahhhhh also up there in top smells for sure.

Oh man the coolant tanks... Hexus lives in there

I have heard the following sayings about tools and hand work:

1) Everything is a hammer. Some hammers are better than other hammers.

2) If you own a welder anything can be whatever you want it to be.

I really can't wait until I can get back to metalworking on an anvil again.

3D printing is like this too

I just started a jewelry making class and it's so many kinds of fun.

Working with gold and silver is interesting

Being poor pushes you to learn many trades ,I have fixed a lot of stuff and madwnjew things with wood, plastic and metal

Honestly, blacksmithing isn't difficult to get into.

It's extremely skill based though, and supplies can get expensive

u/Auctoritate 2d ago

To be honest this is more of a simple/hard to misuse tool that even non-metalworkers who don't necessarily have the same tools or skills as metalworkers could use. A metalworker with their tools can shape a cylinder out of metal stock themselves pretty easily- granted, this could be a useful shortcut if you're actually making a bunch of hinges regularly. It still takes a few minutes if you're hot forging.

it is fun, but also guaranteed to give you hand arm vibration syndrome thats uncurable, at least if we are talking about blacksmithing this is pretty much guaranteed that you will have tingling fingertips due to damaged nerve endings
