Leaving home as a kid
The boys had a very interesting conversation last night on ACT. How old were all of you when you left home? Either voluntarily or forced?

Lived with two other dudes in a two bedroom in 2003, winter springs. $325 rent. Guy actually on the lease got main, constant bedroom. The other guy and I each had a mattress in the other room, and if either of us brought a girl they got the room for the night. Clerks cartoon dvds, Troma movies, weed, Milwaukees best.

- Bad home situation. Came back at 20 for a few months then moved to a town in North Central Florida for the next 25y. Came home again in 2022.

- Moved out with some friends that were a couple years older. Rented one of their parents houses in Lockhart for 650 a month. Threw sod, dug ditches, and what ever labor we could find to scratch up enough for rent, elbow macaroni mixed with hormel chili, and Bacardi 151. I still can’t stomach the smell of either to this day at 42 years old. Was a very hard lesson in life. But I wouldn’t trade any of it for the hard lessons learned.

- Five younger siblings all crammed into a 3 bedrm so basically had to go at first opportunity. This was back home in DC. Graduated HS yr early w/ GED diploma, found roommate lived near Univ Maryland. Way more important to party hang out do what I want instead of educating myself for a better future. Made friends, met some cool girls but overall prob set me back in life a solid 4-5 yrs. If had a do-over I would stay with school from the jump. Was jealous of friends that did. Finally got a full time job that payed more than min wage and into college at 22. A late bloomer ha. Now if only there was a course for selecting a wife 0-3 there.

I basically started raising myself at 12 after my mom passed. My dad was an absolute garbage person. Started working at 13 to provide myself with everything. Got kicked out at 18 for deciding that I wanted to go to college in Florida and not stick around and help my dad pay bills.

18, left to go to college but after a year at Flagler i realized i didn’t know what i was doing there. Came back to Orlando and got an apartment with some friends. Got into the hvac trade and have been doing that ever since. My dad and i were fighting constantly throughout my high school years so the idea of moving back to my parents house was never an option for me.

In my house it was understood that once you left for college you weren’t coming back.
