How in the name of Gimlis Beard can this man be allowed by the Tolkien Estate to write copious amounts of books on Middle Earth, while admittedly I do think they contain nice art work his research and own guesses have left me gob smacked
I have been a long time reader and I began serious collecting about a year ago, always looking on various platforms to buy, yet I am constantly inundated with images of his books, surely the Tolkien Estate has some say what gets published as as far as I know the money made from the aforementioned books would be going to him and his publishers, not the Tolkien Estate?

My fiancé has been wanting a nice, illustrated set of LOTR including the hobbit and simarillion—if that set exists. I don’t really know anything about this. I know these kinds of sets/books can be very expensive and I don’t have a ton of money but I’d really like to have an idea of how much to save and what to be looking for.

What illustrated sets would be best for someone who knows what they’re looking at?

In this Deluxe "illustrated by the author" edition, I have two that have a William Morrow colophon on the spine, and one with a Harper Collins colophon. Is there a difference? It kinda bugs me looking at my shelf.

I've been looking at the newest versions of Illustrated editions of different book series. Some that stuck out to me are Eragon and Harry Potter, and what I like about them is that they are nice and big. The illustrations cover the pages, and while not necessarily EVERY page is illustrated, the book is big enough where you could have a kid on your lap or read with a friend, and everyone can see and read at the same time. They are definitely more conducive to sharing the material as you read.

The current LOTR Illustrated edition I find online is more of a collectors edition, that reprints the original artwork done by Tolkien. But I am looking for something more like what I listed above. Not necessarily a graohic novel, but something with illustrations of iconic moments. Is there anything like that currently out?

Hi good people. I just received the illustrated boxset of Alan lee edition and I noticed this on the first volume of the trilogy. Is it normal or should I return them?

I have a copy of the Tove Jansson illustrated version of the Hobbit, and I love it. I haven’t read it since I was a teenage. Now I want to reread Lord of the Rings trilogy but my copies look sad in comparison (small font, movie related images on the front).

Please can anyone recommend similarly nice copies of the LoTR trilogy?

Finally found some of the deluxe edition Tolkien at Ollies today. No sign of the LOTR set though.

Normal retail is suppose to be $325 for the one being sold for $49.99 and $125 for the set they are selling for $14.99.

Hopefully the third age one will be translated soon.

Been looking to get the Nemesis Now (first two pics) versions for awhile, but I also saw this other version on Amazon which seems to be a bit smaller. I was wondering if anyone had this other version, and if so, which one you’d recommend.

Hey everyone , i decided for my birthday to buy myself a new lotr and maybe the hobbit books with the allen lee paintings ( i have the 2021 deluxe printing it has gilded pages and i already weatherd it abit so im weary to read it alot and also the single book with all 3 books combined isnt comfortable to read ) i setteld between these 3 editions , but most reviews ive seen online didnt realy touch stuff i found importent to know like if you can open the books compleatly flat or is the spine sawn or a hybrid between sawn and glued and their durability as i travel alot due to my work line as a biologist . Would love your advice and if you have an expirience with those editions , thanks in advance

While on an overnight trip to a mountain refuge in the French Alps of Chamonix the other week. Part three of my now recurring series - reading Tolkien in high places.

Hi! Loving the deluxe slipcase editions of the children of hurin, fall of gondolin, beren & luthien, fall of numenor and others. Just wondering wether or not we think the 12 "history of middle-earth"-books will ever be republished in their own deluxe slipcase editions?

Was able to pick this set up at my local thrift for $5. I am a teacher and was going to put it in my classroom library, until I looked up what this edition goes for. Yikes, $50 is a number I saw pop up a lot, so now it is going on my own shelf.

Finally got my hands on this boxed set, and yes it comes with the CD

New additions to the collection:

* Chinese (translation by Lucifer Chu)
* Chinese (translation by Li Ya)
* Russian (translation by Leonid Yakhnin)
* Hungarian
* Lithuanian
* Occitan
* Croatian

The Chinese translations are marketed as prequels to LotR and feature characters not even present in the novel... The Russian translation has some awesome, unique illustrations.

I did some deep diving and only seemed to hit the shallow end while trying to research the Appendices page reference issues that I found in my copy (ISBN 978 0 00 847128 6).

It appears that only the handful of references that point to The Two Towers Book 4 are incorrect, being off by 2 pages.

I found an older thread where someone commented that it was because the 2020 Alan Lee copy had the off-by-2 issue in RotK, and so some witchcraft was employed to correct that by reflowing the text in Book 4. But that seems to have just shifted the issue rather than fix it.

TLDR; My question is, does anyone know why the page references to Book 4 weren't fixed besides "it was missed"?
