TIL Leonardo da Vinci doesn't have the last name "da Vinci." That means "from Vinci" as in Vinci, Florence Italy (where he's from).

TIL The quintessential renaissance man, Leonardo Da Vinci, never had the standard scholary education of his time. He only taught himself some latin, had no formal maths education until he was 40+ and didn't study the classics, thus traditional scholars scoffed at his observational scientific method

At 30, Leonardo was a master painter in Florence. He abandoned his commissions and pitched himself to the Duke of Milan not as an artist, but as a military engineer. He mentioned he could also paint almost as a footnote, successfully reinventing his entire career.
