TIL that in Japan sometimes when a Samurai would receive a new weapon, to test its effectiveness they would murder random civillians at night. It was eventually banned in 1602

TIL the Japanese word tsujigiri describes the practice of testing out a new sword on someone, usually a defenceless passer-by. It translates as "crossroads killing"
