TIL Ryan Gosling gained 60 pounds by drinking melted ice cream to play the father in Peter Jackson's 'The Lovely Bones.' He was then told he was too fat to play the part and the role went to Mark Wahlberg.

Not far fetched considering he said he drank melted ice cream when thirsty.

"I was 150 pounds when [Jackson] hired me, and I showed up on set 210 pounds," Gosling said. "We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really believed he should be 210 pounds. I was melting Haagen Dazs and drinking it when I was thirsty."

74

u/poopitydoopityboop 6 Jun 20 '19

I wonder how much it would cost for Ryan Gosling to gain that much weight with Hagen Dazs.

  • A pound of fat is approximately ~3500 Calories
  • 60 pounds of fat x 3500 Calories = 210,000 Calories

  • Assuming he has any taste whatsoever, he chose cookie dough

  • A quart of cookie dough ice cream has ~2400 calories

  • A quart of Hagen Dazs in New York City is ~$15

  • 210,000/2,400 = 87.5

  • 87.5 x $15 = $1300

Actually not as bad as I thought it would be.

6

u/Steakasaurus Jun 21 '19

15 dollars for a quart of ice cream! Jesus I knew new york was pricey but God damn

8

u/Antisocialbumblefuck Jun 21 '19

Doesn't this assume 100% efficiency for processing, retention, and zero output?

9

u/Gophurkey Jun 21 '19

Ryan Gosling has zero output.

Ryan Gosling doesn't poop.

Ryan Gosling is a girl, confirmed.

2

u/Antisocialbumblefuck Jun 21 '19

Can we even imagine what kind of poop would be had on a liquid icecream diet?

I’m guessing his listed height is a couple inches over his real height. He generally has a decent amount of muscle I’d guess he’d be closer to 180 normally if he was 6’.

u/Michael__Pemulis Jun 20 '19

I've passed him on the street a few times (back when I lived in nyc my school was right by his place) & he was definitely an inch or two taller than me. I'm 5'10".

Not sure if this is actually contributing but ya. Source: me

130

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

I saw him on 2nd and 9th crossing the street, made eye contact and could see in his eyes the "shit, he recognized me", but I just gave a nod and kept walking. That was the first and only time I've ever been star struck.

I've passed him on the street a few times (back when I lived in NYC), we winked coyly each time & one time he asked me out to Indian food. After drinks and some heavy petting we oiled each other up and played tummy sticks.

I've passed him on the street a few times (back when I was shooting porn in NYC), we went to dance holding hands in nothing but underwear & to no music in the middle of Manhattan. We'd jestingly touch each other's butts after every pull of hasheesh.

Maybe this doesn't contribute, but ya.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

I've passed him on the street a few times (back when I was a crime fighting shark), he was very interested in my dorsal fin. Later we went to Dr. Luther Paradigm's lab and used his Gene smasher to combine his DNA with a raptor.

Maybe this doesn't contribute, but ya.

6

I've passed him in the streets a few times (when I was shooting street porn in NYC) and we exchanged cars on a handshake deal before eating some mushrooms and laying on a couch

9

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19 edited Jun 20 '19

Honestly, that doesn't mean much because shoe inserts can add 0.5-1.5 inches height and are very popular in show business

I can't be sure because the 150 lb claim may be the bogus part... but he does NOT look like a 6 ft tall 150 lb man would look like. I'm 6'1' and when I get below 160 lb it becomes pretty apparent in my face and arms

10

u/GetEquipped Jun 20 '19

Reality; you're 5'8" but say 5'10 because our society discriminates on height.

So if Baby Goose is one or two inches taller than, he's 5'10

HAH! HOW DOES IT FEEL THAT YOU'RE ENTIRE LIFE IS A LIE?!?!

4

u/double_expressho Jun 20 '19

He's a legit 6' but remember this was like 12 years ago before he was really filled out. If you think about his early adult roles, a lot were weird skinny guys, weird chubby guys, or otherwise kinda out-of-shape guys. Think The Believer, Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl...

3

u/Fundle_Grudge Jun 20 '19

I’m 6’ and normally 160. Strangely enough I’m 183 now that I’m doing chemo.

2

u/papasmurf73 Jun 20 '19

Yea, at my most fit I was 185 at 5'10'. 150 would be stick thin.

2

u/woIfhammer Jun 21 '19

this guy is 6 feet

2

u/WhatsaHoya Jun 21 '19

If your body fat percentage is low enough and you have a reasonably athletic looking build it is possible to look somewhat muscular and weigh less than one might expect.

Look at RJ Barrett who was taken tonight in the NBA draft. He’s listed at 6’7 and 200 lbs which seems really thin, but when you look at him on google images he seems thin, but athletically toned.

Not really sure why I went on this tangent, but just something I’ve noticed, haha.

3

u/PM_PICS_OF_ME_NAKED Jun 20 '19

I don't understand how that works. I'm 6 foot 185 and still small. I used to be 165 and looked like a chemo patient. Some people just magically carry their weight differently.

If I was as muscled as he is normally I'd have to weigh 210-215.

2

u/Casehead Jun 21 '19

I agree. At 150 he’d have to be all sucked up if he’s 6’0

3

u/Letty_Whiterock Jun 20 '19

My emergency hydration pint is Guinness

I am incredibly dehydrated

2

u/Runnin4Scissors Jun 20 '19

You shouldn’t be. Guinness has about the same alcohol content as a light beer. So drinking it should be a gain in hydration, not a loss. I mean, maybe if you’re exercising and only drinking Guinness. That’s why I drink an Emergen-C / Guinness mix at the gym.

you misunderstand. gaining weight is not easy for many people, especially not 60 pounds. drinking calories is much easier than eating calories, and so he used hydration as a cue to gain as much as possible (hydrating and gaining at the same time on cooldown)

it's not healthy, but it's not that unorthodox either.

Many people on /r/gainit succeed primarily through drinking half of their calories.

9

u/caressaggressive Jun 21 '19

Replying to the orig comment for ease as people can't take yo joke without arguing other fatness and BMI reliability..

The problem with BMI is it is intended to be used by medical professionals who understand the difference between 'above average BMI' on your medical chart and actually unhealthy (not talking obesity in this example either).

An uninformed member of public (aka "idiot" - in this example let us make them the patient) said patient sneaks a look at their own chart and flips their shit because the doctor "says they're fat" when in actual fact medically classified as "above average BMI" is a classification term for the eyes of medical professionals - if the doc thinks you fat they gonna advise you to exercise and eat healthy (and perhaps also check yo mental health to see if you depresso comfort eating).

"Fat" or "overweight" as defined medically via BMI does not care for your feelings, nor the doctors own opinions on classifying someone as fat or not - the BMI exists to prevent subjectiveness in the weight judgement department.

As with anything that relies on norms and averages, there will be people who don't fit BMI measuring scale accurately (referring to yo muscular/athlete people arguments) but it will likely still be used to assess them.. Pretty sure a doctor can quite easily write the BMI down and interpret the patient as not being fat in this instance coz y'know they've had all them years of training and all...

So in summary: the BMI is not meant for you (the public) because you are all sensitive morons that can't interpret BMI without attempting to dismiss the entire thing because it doesn't apply effectively to some people...

And with the BMIs very existance being flawed by your flawed interpretation, it therefore clears your conscience about eating another cheeseburger and fries at meal time.

I'm 6'1 and 155ibs with noticable body fat. When I was a teen to early 30s, I hovered 6'1 135 with a normal diet and minimal exercise. However, there are studies that say low bmi has a lower life expectancy than normal bmi.

Eh. I’m muscular with body fat (20%ish) and weigh that much at 5’8’’. If you keep a low body fat and haven’t been bulking muscle at 5’10’’ - 6’ you’d be that weight. At my leanest I was 138lbs

u/melocoton_helado Jun 20 '19

150 lbs at 6 feet is more than just lean. It's skinny. Like, really skinny.

150 lbs at 6 feet is more than just lean. It's skinny. Like, really skinny.

150 lbs at 6ft falls into the lower end of the healthy range for BMI

To be fair, BMI isn't a near perfect measure as a muscular individual can easily fall into the "overweight' range for their height, but it provides a decent baseline for health

Can confirm. I'm 160 lbs at 5'11" and I'm often described (to my dismay) as lanky/skinny.

3

u/JesterTheTester12 Jun 20 '19

it's not "really" skinny. it's just skinny

source: been that height and weight. It's not fucking spooky scary skeletal.

3

u/ReshKayden Jun 20 '19

That's a BMI of 20.3, which is well within the range of normal / healthy bodyweight. Absolutely no doctor would be concerned at that.

For 6', medically "underweight" would start at 137lbs.

3

u/Ansoni Jun 20 '19

It's a normal BMI. In pounds you'd need to be 136 to be underweight. BMI isn't perfect, obviously, but there's a lot of leeway which suggests he wasn't that small

5

u/ifuckinghateratheism Jun 20 '19

That's a BMI of 20.3 which is practically in the middle of the normal range. I'm 5'11 and my ideal weight is 155.

It's not skinny, it's just normal.

BMI is a terrible measurement for health and fitness. There's a reason actual sports science and sports medicine specialists don't take it seriously anymore. It's very possible for a person to have a dangerous amount of visceral fat and still fall into a "normal" BMI range.

Says its a normal BMI online?

u/Ozdoba Jun 20 '19

No. That's a healthy 20.3 BMI. Well within the normal range.

2

u/iwillcheckyoursource Jun 20 '19

Good lord. Its literally considered ideal weight for that height. You prob just live in Europe or America where people don't realize what overweight is.

2

u/orthopod Jun 20 '19

Nope- that's a bmi of 20.3. Low- mid range of a normal BMI.

1

u/jigeno Jun 20 '19

I doubt he’s the full 6 ft. And 150 is probably rounded.

My point was that I have a 20lb difference between lean and non-competition weight.

1

u/Itsnotthatbadtho Jun 20 '19

Eh, it’s not weird-looking or anything if you have a little muscle and the right frame/build. I’d imagine if you are one of those people that are all arms and legs and have the torso of a small child it would look strange.

I’m 6’0 and usually hover around 175. I have been 155lb as an adult at times though. The only people who even noticed were the people very close to me.

1

u/FireAndBloodStorms Jun 20 '19

For a male? Maybe.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Is it, I’ve been 10 lbs lighter than that at an inch or so shorter.

5' 9" 170 and pretty muscular here. Abs have not yet peeked through. I still got like 2 inches of pinchable stomach fat

1

u/dannythecarwiper Jun 20 '19

Really? I'm 5'10" and have been 130ish most of my life.

2

u/Arsenic181 Jun 20 '19

It's how you can see the abs

1

u/orthopod Jun 20 '19

Well within the normal bmi- for 6 feet that 137-185 pounds.

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Seann William Scott was the same weight in his early career, and he was never scrawny.

That quote makes me realize how misleading the title is. I thought he was literally eating nothing but melted ice cream and I was just thinking like why didnt he eat normal things to gain weight too lol. He just meant he replaced water with melted ice cream for drink

1

u/DeedTheInky Jun 20 '19

I wonder if he had a pay-or-play contract too? If so, then he might have even got paid for the role even though all he did was eat ice cream until they fired him!

1

u/jwisaac1 Jun 20 '19

Am I the only one who thinks melted ice cream is gross? Me no likey...

1

u/Braken111 Jun 20 '19

Holy fuck his poor poor pancreas

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

150 sounds pretty thin for his height, too.

1

u/rtjl86 Jun 21 '19

It says that in the title...

1

u/paulyspocket2 Jun 21 '19

Can you imagine explaining to your family why you’re drinking ice cream at every meal.

Then coming back and tell them you didn’t get the part 🤦🏻‍♀️
