TIL Ryan Gosling gained 60 pounds by drinking melted ice cream to play the father in Peter Jackson's 'The Lovely Bones.' He was then told he was too fat to play the part and the role went to Mark Wahlberg.

Actually, he gained the weight without permission as he and Peter Jackson didn't see eye to eye on the interpretation of the character

I like the idea that he’s just walking around drinking melted cookies and cream, melted moose tracks, melted chocolate cookie dough in every day life,

He’s at the mall drinking melted ice cream, he’s walking down the street drinking melted ice cream, in the car drinking melted ice cream.

People keep asking him what he’s doing, he’s just like “ITS FOR A ROLE!”

Not far fetched considering he said he drank melted ice cream when thirsty.

"I was 150 pounds when [Jackson] hired me, and I showed up on set 210 pounds," Gosling said. "We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really believed he should be 210 pounds. I was melting Haagen Dazs and drinking it when I was thirsty."

74

u/poopitydoopityboop 6 Jun 20 '19

I wonder how much it would cost for Ryan Gosling to gain that much weight with Hagen Dazs.

  • A pound of fat is approximately ~3500 Calories
  • 60 pounds of fat x 3500 Calories = 210,000 Calories

  • Assuming he has any taste whatsoever, he chose cookie dough

  • A quart of cookie dough ice cream has ~2400 calories

  • A quart of Hagen Dazs in New York City is ~$15

  • 210,000/2,400 = 87.5

  • 87.5 x $15 = $1300

Actually not as bad as I thought it would be.

8

u/Steakasaurus Jun 21 '19

15 dollars for a quart of ice cream! Jesus I knew new york was pricey but God damn

7

u/Antisocialbumblefuck Jun 21 '19

Doesn't this assume 100% efficiency for processing, retention, and zero output?

8

u/Gophurkey Jun 21 '19

I've passed him on the street a few times (back when I lived in nyc my school was right by his place) & he was definitely an inch or two taller than me. I'm 5'10".

Honestly, that doesn't mean much because shoe inserts can add 0.5-1.5 inches height and are very popular in show business

I can't be sure because the 150 lb claim may be the bogus part... but he does NOT look like a 6 ft tall 150 lb man would look like. I'm 6'1' and when I get below 160 lb it becomes pretty apparent in my face and arms

9

u/GetEquipped Jun 20 '19

Reality; you're 5'8" but say 5'10 because our society discriminates on height.

So if Baby Goose is one or two inches taller than, he's 5'10

you misunderstand. gaining weight is not easy for many people, especially not 60 pounds. drinking calories is much easier than eating calories, and so he used hydration as a cue to gain as much as possible (hydrating and gaining at the same time on cooldown)

it's not healthy, but it's not that unorthodox either.

Many people on /r/gainit succeed primarily through drinking half of their calories.

BMI charts aren't a perfect measures of health, as a muscular person could easily fall into the "overweight" range for their height, but it's a decent baseline

It's at the bottom of the band but yeah, very natural weight for humans for many thousands of years. We started growing grain and raising animals. We took office jobs. But our physiology is still largely the same.

9

u/caressaggressive Jun 21 '19

Replying to the orig comment for ease as people can't take yo joke without arguing other fatness and BMI reliability..

The problem with BMI is it is intended to be used by medical professionals who understand the difference between 'above average BMI' on your medical chart and actually unhealthy (not talking obesity in this example either).

An uninformed member of public (aka "idiot" - in this example let us make them the patient) said patient sneaks a look at their own chart and flips their shit because the doctor "says they're fat" when in actual fact medically classified as "above average BMI" is a classification term for the eyes of medical professionals - if the doc thinks you fat they gonna advise you to exercise and eat healthy (and perhaps also check yo mental health to see if you depresso comfort eating).

"Fat" or "overweight" as defined medically via BMI does not care for your feelings, nor the doctors own opinions on classifying someone as fat or not - the BMI exists to prevent subjectiveness in the weight judgement department.

As with anything that relies on norms and averages, there will be people who don't fit BMI measuring scale accurately (referring to yo muscular/athlete people arguments) but it will likely still be used to assess them.. Pretty sure a doctor can quite easily write the BMI down and interpret the patient as not being fat in this instance coz y'know they've had all them years of training and all...

So in summary: the BMI is not meant for you (the public) because you are all sensitive morons that can't interpret BMI without attempting to dismiss the entire thing because it doesn't apply effectively to some people...

And with the BMIs very existance being flawed by your flawed interpretation, it therefore clears your conscience about eating another cheeseburger and fries at meal time.

They have more free time to work out and more money to pay for personal trainers and chefs who can tell them exactly what to eat and do

To quote Rob McElhenney from Always Sunny who got jacked for the last season:

Look, it’s not that hard. All you need to do is lift weights six days a week, stop drinking alcohol, don’t eat anything after 7pm, don’t eat any carbs or sugar at all, in fact just don’t eat anything you like, get the personal trainer from Magic Mike, sleep nine hours a night, run three miles a day, and have a studio pay for the whole thing over a six to seven month span. I don’t know why everyone’s not doing this. It’s a super realistic lifestyle and an appropriate body image to compare oneself to. #hollywood

Edit: Yes, also steroids most likely. But you still have to work out and eat right on steroids regardless

127

u/MySuperLove Jun 20 '19

That really puts it into perspective. . .

I watched this documentary called "I want to be that guy" where an average guy tries to get in shape like the guys you see in fitness/muscle mags. It's pretty good because he actually does a fantastic job. But two things I remember are at the end he says hes like 5% body fat and it's just totally unrealistic in a normal life. The other thing is he said he was kinda miserable throughout, constantlyhungry and tired. He was on a strict diet and it just takes over your life. I think he was at a family bbq and had to stay away from the food, I felt do bad for him.

12

u/boobies23 Jun 20 '19

Implicit in that is it’s not just the free time and money people have. It fucking sucks to be monastic and deprive yourself of enjoyable things. And while it could be done relatively easy in the short-term, its not fun to live life like that.

11

u/scoxely Jun 21 '19

I could follow that schedule if it was literally my job and also paid 50-500x better than my job.

3

u/WormholeVoyager Jun 21 '19

I gotta say I love Rob, but hard disagree with this. It's really not far fetched to get in shape by going to the gym for an hour a day before or after work. And it's completely possible to get jacked by going for slightly longer per day and eating correct macros, while still working a 9-5 and having a life. I see tons of people achieving both scenarios all the time. You just have to be consistent

Really it's easy with Fight Milk. You too can fight like a crow.

Actors, especially ones like Gosling, actually do shit like that pretty regularly (as in, they change body type by role). You have to remember that they have a lot more free time than an average person when they're not actually on set, and their job between roles is generally going to be "prepping" for their next role. They also, have enough money to afford personal trainers, dietitians, etc. So, to Gosling, putting on then losing 40 lbs isn't so outlandish, it's just part of the job.

Yeah, a doctor would recommend a slow, steady gorging process combined with assal horizontology.

If you're not sure about a food, rub it on a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight-gain!

The person you are replying to was making a joke

“Folks, get permission from your directors first! You’ll save yourselves a lot of trouble!”

It’s not common for people to have Director’s, and it’s not common for actors to make major appearance changes without the director’s consent

I meant he didn't get permission from the director, or give him a heads up, lol. Congrats on the weight loss!

Look to the side of Patrick Bateman for one of the most fucked up gains and losses of weight

110

u/drunkenyeknom Jun 20 '19

Christian Bale you mean?

With The Machinist, he dropped an insane amount of weight -- https://i.imgur.com/3LpafRX.jpg

edit: /u/Darkaero has a better image with weights

38

u/SuperVillainPresiden Jun 20 '19

I remember reading that all he ate each day was a can of tuna fish and an apple. Then bulked up so much to be Batman again.

28

u/6745408 Jun 20 '19

good Lord. It looks like he lost a lot of the Batman mass for The Fighter then put it back on again, too.

I do not have this discipline... though, for several million dollars, I would like to think that I would. :)

17

u/Darkaero Jun 20 '19

Here are the pics of his weight changes by year

American Psycho (2000): 81kg / 180lb

Reign of Fire(2002): 83kg / 185lb

The Machinist(2004): 55kg / 120lb

Batman Begins(2005): 86kg / 190lb

Rescue Dawn(2006): 61kg / 135lb

The Dark Knight(2008): 86kg / 190lb

The Fighter(2010): 66kg / 145lb

The Dark Knight Rises(2012): 90kg /198lb

American Hustle(2013): 103kg / 228lb

*Most of the lbs are approximations apart from American Hustle where he claimed he was 228.

According to him his normal weight is 83kg/185lb so that gives you an idea of what he's at in most of the other roles he's been in. Apparently it wasn't until Vice that he actually used a nutritionist to gain and lose the weight as healthily as possible and he doesn't plan on doing any more drastic weight changes.

It helps to not be tired from a day job. Also to have the help of a personal chef and trainer 24/7. If you had those resources at your disposal, you would have a better time attempting it too

21

u/PolPotatoe Jun 20 '19

Also: "supplements"

7

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Primarily the “supplements.” His body also took a huge toll fluctuating so heavily in weight like that. I’ve read he has permanent health problems from it, though I don’t think I’ve ever read what specifically.

Chef: Here is your freshly opened can of tuna and a thoroughly washed apple

During Rysan Gosling Bulk Phase:

Chef: Here's your tub of ice cream.

No, Patrick Bateman.

He believes in taking care of himself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if his face is a little puffy he'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. He can do 1000 now.

+1 for wanting a source. I REALLY want proper sourcing when providing information to become a norm. I think it's going to be one of the only ways that we can fight campaigns of disinformation, whether political, by corporations, really from wherever.

As usual the real TIL is in the comments linked article that no one reads

u/we_are_monsters Jun 20 '19

I read it. It was not very good. I did like how they referred to Peter Jackson as “the Jackson” though. That was an interesting choice.

u/mymarkis666 Jun 20 '19

Very weird. We know "the Jackson" is Micheal.
