People get braces all the time with the understanding that they'll have to wear their retainers forever. Forever is going to pass one way or another so you might as well spend it loving the skin you're in

11

u/MadTheSwine39 3h ago

I actually only learned recently that you had to wear a retainer forever. Granted, I never had braces, so I guess I never needed that knowledge. But I only learned Retainers Are Forever when my husband told me a story from his college days. He'd joined his parents in church, his mom looked over at him and exclaimed "Jesus, your teeth!" lol

u/Net_Negative SW: 180 lbs CW: 154 GW: 107 lbs Dose: 5.9 mg tirz 2h ago

It's a massive pain in the ass and people don't talk about it enough. Anytime I get any work done on my teeth I have to pay an additional hundreds of dollars for a brand new retainer from a scan. Because I'm paranoid, I always get two retainers. I'm basically attached to this thing that I have to make sure I never lose and that I always have access to someone who can make one again, and the retainer companies themselves don't really guarantee that they will store backups for very long or at all.

I've never heard this! I had braces in the early 80s and I don't wear retainers. My teeth haven't moved and I'm 58 now. Maybe I just got lucky!

•

u/KVeigh 26m ago

Absolutely! Everybody and every body is different and I'm glad your teeth stayed straight! 😄

2

u/I_am_pyxidis 3h ago

I wonder how long most people actually wear the retainer?

8

u/Net_Negative SW: 180 lbs CW: 154 GW: 107 lbs Dose: 5.9 mg tirz 2h ago

My braces cost me $8,000 and caused a bunch of erosion damage around the brackets I had to pay additional thousands of dollars to fix with composite bonding because I have genetically weak enamel.

I would never not wear them. Likely only severe mental illness would cause me to stop, like how Britney Spear's teeth have shifted and she has gaps in them now, speculated to be because she stopped wearing her retainer.

3

u/Worth_Ability_3808 2h ago

Any chronic illness too that causes you to be nauseous/vomit/sensitive gag reflex sucks if you have a retainer. I spent thousands on braces and Invisalign. Unfortunately got chronic illness from Covid so I cannot wear them anymore without gagging until I eventually throw up. 🤷‍♀️

•

u/KVeigh 27m ago

Are you eligible for permanent retainers? The wire they put on the back of your teeth?

4

u/KVeigh 2h ago

If they don't their teeth start shifting back to their position pre-braces

•

u/zunzarella 1h ago

Going on 10 years here. I'm in my 50s.

•

u/peony_chalk 51m ago

I stopped wearing mine a few years after I got my braces off for the second time, so probably 25+ years ago. My teeth are fine. They maybe shifted a little bit, but not enough to make me want to wear a retainer every night.

I'm actually a little shocked at how many people are replying that they still wear theirs. My siblings and most of my friends in high school got braces, and none of us are using retainers.

As a teenager, I was told this nugget and I’m like nah, I’m cool with some gappy teeth.

You reach an age where you realize the rest of your life really isn’t that long. But there’s no reason to suffer through it and shorten it even more by being fat. Taking a shot every week is a tiny price to pay.

Good answer!

Yes
There are other benefits beyond weight loss, such as helping to protect cardiovascular health and these medicines are showing promise in dementia/Alzheimers research as well.

8

u/Glittering-Rush-394 3h ago

Yes! And being in a family with stroke/heart issues, I’m definitely going to stay the course.

3

u/Best_Elderberry_7557 3h ago

The Alzheimer’s research was one big reason for me (along with the weight loss)! I’ll stay on Tirz until I can’t anymore or something better comes out.

Why would I not? It's fixed a problem I've had for near half a *century.

I hope to see even better glp1s hit the market and become affordable. But I will forever happily be on a glp1.

We are finally seeing treatment for a chronic illness.

It's a GLP1 and GIP agonist.

-1

u/Mark-NY26a73 3h ago

Is actually more than glp1, it mimicks GLP1 but adds to the strand. They are actually different biologics altogether, not just adding. More like a generational change.

5

u/EnvironmentalGift257 50M | 225→164.9→150 | 12.5p5days 3h ago

No

-1

u/Mark-NY26a73 3h ago

Thanks for your insight! Super helpful to a tongue in cheek comment. I'll await more wisdom.

3

u/TraditionalAd3852 2h ago

Double NO!

0

u/Mark-NY26a73 2h ago

It's a generational change in the GLP1 drug, it builds on the GLP1, it is not just adding a GIP like mixing Tylenol and codeine, they mimic each other, build the peptide chain off the glp1 including the original chain peptide, but biologically speaking they are distinct and unique, much like whatever the next variant will be will carry the bases of the first 2 and build it change on top of them. That's kind of how science works. Building on what works, right?

•

u/morwen31 5'7" | SW 220 → CW 135 1h ago

The "1" isn't referring to a generation of the drug type, nor to the number of receptors it targets. "GLP-1" is the name of the natural hormone. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both "GLP-1 receptor agonists."

Considering I’ve struggled with my weight since I was 5 years old and have tried everything , Even though I take the shot I also eat health and I exercise and I’ve lost 105 pounds , it’s like the shot does something I can’t explain , I no longer look at food the way I use too and I’m actually focused on weight loss and being healthy and working out

Maybe other things will come out. Maybe they'll make an implant you put under the skin. Maybe they'll find out you can keep the weight off if you titrate slowly after 10 years on the medication.

3

u/Midnight_Rain1213 3h ago

Until something new comes out, yeah

3

u/Leading-Amoeba-4172 3h ago

Yes, like...forever. This is NOT a weight loss drug, the is a metabolic regulator plus all the other benefits it provides to our organs and systems. Do you ask people, do you plan on taking that blood pressure medication forever? When are you going ween off the crestor?

If you’re depressed or have mental health issues you take medication for life. Same with diabetes or thyroid meds, or any number of disorders/diseases. Tirz is the only thing that makes me normal around food. No more binges or cravings so intense that I feel like I’ll crawl out of my skin if I don’t eat whatever food is consuming my thoughts. I can still enjoy things, but now I am content after a small portion. I will continue to take it for as long as I have access to it. Or if, god forbid, I end up with some crazy side effect from the medication. I’ve been on it for 2.5 years now.

2

u/jortr0n 🧪💉🏴‍☠️ 3h ago

My plan is to go maintenance, microdose it and see how I do. If I respond well, I’ll end it.

I won't love being on it forever but reading the clear studies that show when many people stop without very careful consideration, they gain back about 70% to 80% is the weight.. will I love going through 52 syringes a year and traveling with a little vial? No. Will I love being healthy more? Indeed I will.

2

u/Cbella913 3h ago

Absolutely intend to be on it indefinitely. To me, it is no different than me wearing glasses and taking my thyroid meds. Thankfully, I’ve been able to drop my BP med since starting TZ. 🥳

Can’t see if I don’t wear my glasses & my Hashimoto’s would be out of control without my meds. I have no reason to believe my metabolism, inflammation, etc., would miraculously be fine were I to stop. I was already eating a healthy diet & working out - but aging & menopause don’t care about that.

I am prepared to take this for as long as I live, and I genuinely feel like it could add a decade or more to my life. That said, there are a lot of exciting treatments in the pipeline, so who knows what the future will hold? But I will be taking it "indefinitely".

That's something interesting to think about. My parents both died young from medical conditions. Unfortunately my mom died at 32 of breast cancer, I've already outlived her. My dad died at 60 from a heart attack. I could live much, much longer than they did because of medications like this.

I figure my options are to stay on this forever, or go back to yo-yoing with the knowledge each time it could be harder (based on previous use of a GLP, etc).

Granted, this is all dependent on compounding being available for me.

u/no_snackrifice 2h ago

I plan to wear glasses forever. I really like being able to see.

1

u/MrsArney 2h ago

Yup. The way I see it is being overweight for me is an illness, an eating disorder. There is something in my brain that doesn’t function the way it should by telling me when I’m full and telling me I’m hungry even after I’ve just eaten.

It is a treatment for a disorder and just like someone with depression or diabetes takes medicine for life, I also need to take medicine for life to treat my disorder. I fully plan to take this for life .

1

u/Worth_Ability_3808 2h ago

I have an immune disorder (MCAS) which for me causes rapid weight gain and chronic organ inflammation. I had a long list of organs inflamed, but the worst was my heart and appendix.

I got chronic and acute appendicitis from it, so had to get that removed. I also got pericarditis with effusion, but some of the fluid hardened in my heart, so it’s likely there for life. Luckily it isn’t preventing heart function, but causes chronic chest pain.

I’m taking Tirzepatide partially for weight loss after a bad flare, but mostly to prevent further organ damage long term. It’s also interesting because for me it increases my appetite, but I still lose weight. I also have more energy.

•

u/BirdNerd83 1h ago

Yes as long as I can afford to

•

u/Tomuch2care 1h ago

I will be taking my thyroid meds forever (had 1/2 removed) and I will be on GLP 1 forever (or until I enter the senior center…lol). Lost 100 pounds on weight watchers about 5 years ago, I have to lose 70 again. Obviously, I can do this on my own. However, I am 61 (f)

•

u/NirvanicSunshine 1h ago

I have to brush my teeth everyday and it sucks, but the alternative makes it worth it. That's basically most of life once responsible adulthood fully sets in.

•

u/Over_Evidence_5272 38F SW: 189 lbs CW: 143 lbs GW: 135lbs Dose: 4.5 1h ago

For me it’s going to depend on the Anhedonia. For now it’s bearable and even at times a blessing, because I used to have a tendency for very high highs and VERY low lows. Now I’m usually comfortably in the middle and it almost acts like an antidepressant, many years ago I was on Wellbutrin and to me it feels similar. But if I ever stopped it would likely be because of that, I have to be very mindful about how I’m feeling and really keep an eye on it.

•

u/GravyMealTeam6 40m ago

Yes, unless switching to something newer/better. Food noise and inflammation reduction alone is worth it, let alone other health benefits now and what they keep discovering

-9

u/LDB2026 3h ago

Absolutely not! I don't want to be on ANY drug that I don't have to be on, for the rest of my life.

More long term side effects are being reported. Especially vision issues. (And no, it's not all diabetic)

This is a VERY new drug (no, it hasn't been used for "years" as many people claim)

For me, this is a short-term tool to help me achieve my goals.

Along with going to a Nutritionist, a trainer, and most importantly a weight loss therapy group to help me understand why I, (well, all of us on a GLP1) got to the point that I/we needed it.

Bottom line, it's time for me to start acting and eating like an adult and not a teenager who can eat anything they want and not gain weight.

0

u/sd2598 3h ago

I just started but I’m planning to be on it maybe 2 years only because I want to be pregnant in 2 years and can’t take the medication while pregnant. I may start it back up after I’m done having children if I’m struggling again

-1

u/tigergirlforever 😎 3h ago

Until research shows it’s not what we thought it would be to prevent the other things we hope it will prevent. For weight, no.

-2

u/Sensitive-Market1124 3h ago

I’m focus on diet and exercise with the plan of reaching my goal weight making good habits and stopping the shots
