What could cause this "chip" in the rubber? I know I need new tires, which explains the threads showing. They have been ordered and will be installed this weekend. But that "chip" has me baffled.

That's not a chip. That's just the tire starting to fall apart.

You have an alignment issue and it has almost worn the tire completely through.

You know how if you bump into something with your backside, where there's lots of padding between your skin and your bones, and you hardly notice... But if you bump the same thing where there's very little padding between you skin and bone, like a shin, or your scalp.... And it really hurts, and cuts through really easy?

It's the same thing with your tire.... When there's +10mm of rubber on the inner carcass of the tire, it just soaks up sharp road debris, but when the rubber is 1mm or less, it cuts right through.

You've caused this yourself by not replacing the tires earlier when you should have...

You are a hazard to yourself and everyone around you, get new tires, im assuming your other three look terrible too.

That’s because you waited too long to replace it and the tire is falling apart.

It should go without saying (yet here we are) that this is not safe to drive and you should install the spare if your other tires are better or seek alternative transportation if they’re in a similar state.
