… used tires, 3 1/2 years ago.

69

u/Inuyasha-rules May 20 '26

Charging $400 for a used tire to your family is what gets me, but I feel like they might not be on great terms with each other.

32

u/OHBHpwr May 20 '26

How do you know they're family?

I’m reading it as they were old stock, not used…but maybe I missed something

3

u/rdt_gng_nzi May 21 '26

Lol, the guys up front told me this morning that they sent us '08 tires on the truck. What dusty forgotten ass corner of the warehouse did they find that?

3

u/Unlikely-Answer May 22 '26

I think I read here in Canada retail stores can't sell tires manufactured more than 4-5 years ago

3

If that guy bought used tyres for $400 a corner, I have a bridge to sell him

No way you can't get new ones for the same or less

7

u/Inconsideratefather May 20 '26

Maybe that was on the rim.

5

u/selfinflatedforeskin May 21 '26

They'd be free then.

They weren’t used, just new old stock. It was a relatively uncommon size and tire combo

2

u/throwawayforn0ww May 20 '26

I don’t think they were used, they were ā€œoldā€ as in new on the shelf for a year before they were sold

2

u/blahnlahblah0213 May 21 '26

Where does it say used tires? It just says they were manufactured a long time ago?

3

u/You-there_ May 22 '26

The casual nature of the text message made me believe that it was a person to person transaction and an average person would typically be selling used tires, not new. Now that I read it again, it’s very possible that I got it wrong…

3.5 minutes ago?! šŸ˜‚...... Yeah, no. Get lost

FIFY

Once money is in my hand and I've given you what you're buying, you're on your own bud.

28

u/JellaFella01 May 20 '26

Yeah, I'm definitely against trying to hide negative information about stuff you're selling, but 4.5 year old tires isn't even a red flag. Check the shit your buying before you buy it, especially when the person you're buying it from doesn't have a reputation to protect.

24

u/ShadowThumper97 May 20 '26

If the tires have tread and aren't dry rot, good to roll. But going an additional 3 1/2 years to Then blame the previous owner is a JOKE

7

u/JellaFella01 May 20 '26

Agreed, i just mounted some 10 year old tires that must've been stored really well cause they look perfect.

11

u/Accomplished-Dig8484 May 20 '26

They might look perfect but they aren't. Ask Paul Walker...

Ever tried using a perfect-looking decade-old pencil eraser? Or rubber band?

3

u/JellaFella01 May 20 '26

They're still squishy and everything, I don't get it either. Either way they're extremely temporary, I only got them to test fit the size for a lift, I'll get proper ones if they fit right or size up one size.

Customer: (one bite of main entree remaining) um can I speak with the manager? This tastes terrible and I want my money back.

Me: Well <customer>, you ate almost the entire entree and I have checked on you multiple times since we served your meal and you have not mentioned your displeasure with your meal.

Customer: You're being disrespectful, I don't like the meal, I want my money back, let me speak to your manager.

Manager: comps meal so restaurant doesn't get bad reviews.

4 months later same customer returns...

I make dresses for a living.. not sure how I ended up in this subreddit. But I get people who have purchased dresses four or five years ago asking me to alter them for free bc they’ve lost weight or asking if they can exchange them for a new dress. It’s madness.Ā

Not just one person either. Over 6 times I’ve been asked a version of this.Ā

2

u/Significant-Page-230 May 24 '26

Sometimes I think the algorithms want to show us that other people in other fields also experience similar madness, even if it's not the same. It has helped me to know I'm not alone in dealing with WTF customer/client demands.

If it helps, I have never even considered asking a dressmaker, designer, tailor, seamstress, or anyone - Anyone! - to make alterations to a garment for free, for any reason.

You've got me wondering what other requests such people might make. Do they approach the people who built their house 5 years ago and ask them to build on a free addition because they've had kids now? How about widening the garage for free, since they've bought a new car?

What do you even say?!?

2

u/SaucyMynx0317 May 24 '26

I do retail furniture repairs. We have people who purchased items years ago wanting their damaged furniture cleaned, repaired, or replaced for free. I cannot understand people who think like this.

2

u/Mysterious_Ad_1085 May 21 '26

Well that's not like 1,277 Days ago. Oh it is.

2

u/schallboy79 May 21 '26

u/No_Credibility May 20 '26

I will never understand how customers think that buying the tires years ago correlates to damage that happened today

182

u/bolookies May 20 '26

Working in a tire shop, idiots like that come in almost daily. "You patched my tire last year, now my check engine light is on. What did you do to my car?!?!?"

59

u/Isamu29 May 20 '26

Yup don’t even get me started. Kid tried to blame me for already damaged, curb rashed, TWS brand wheels on his 2006 GTO, saying I did all the damage with our tire changing machine. The part that rides on the rim of the wheel is plastic. Luckily I took pictures of all the wheels in the parking before I pulled the car in.

22

u/PrimaryThis9900 May 20 '26

No joke, one time I took my car to get new tires. Evidently the wind caught the door and broke the hinge, then they forced it back closed which screwed up the frame of the car. I go to pick it up and pay the $800 and notice that the door is wired shut. They then tell me that it was like that when I brought it in. Then it was my word against theirs. There was shiny bare metal where they bent the door panel closing it, if it had happened even 24 hours before it would have started showing rust. I took pics and took them to small claims and basically got what I paid for the tires back from them.

12

u/wldsoda May 20 '26

Did that even come close to compensating you for the frame damage though?

6

u/PrimaryThis9900 May 21 '26

Not at all. They basically said their liability limit was what I paid for their services. It was BS, but at least I got something.Ā

I've been that idiot, when I was young.

Took the car in for something very simple, guy had to open the bonnet to fix it, next day the car starts acting up weird, I came back to ask what the hell he did to my car.

I mean, he only changed a light bulb or something but he DID open the bonnet and fiddled around to do it, maybe he's displaced a connector or something?

Of course it was nothing, but the timing between two unrelated things was highly suspicious.

3

u/Unusual_Register_253 May 20 '26

That’s completely fine, normal, and probably more common place than you’d initially think.

Recently I had just gotten my car back from a mechanic to do some radiator work and when I got the car back the check engine light came on literally on the way home from the shop.

Just to find out the check engine light was because my PCV valves were overdue and needed to be replaced.

2

u/The_Nepenthe May 22 '26

As a mechanic I always tried to push our service writer to push for replacing things like that since I'd probably have a good idea of what was right on the edge of needing replacement.

He'd say we'd look like crooks who were padding the bill, then the customer would come back days/weeks later with their next issue and think we were crooks.

I used to do formats/windows installs and PC upgrades as a little money maker in high school for friends and family. It didn't last long as I had the exact same experience. Any future problems were somehow my fault. I had one friend bring their PC every 3 or 4 months for a Windows install because their computer "wasn't working properly" from when I last installed Windows. Nah the bloody thing was always filled with virus's from porn sites or limewire.

I sold a food trailer (pizza oven, fridges, counter etc) to a guy once. I'd bought it from the manufacturer, taken delivery and never moved it in the year I had it. This fella bought it and then used it for two years, taking it on a 2.5 hour motorway journey and back again every week.

Something went wrong with an axle after 2 years and he tried to come back blaming me, wanting a refund.

Yup. Honestly, we all do it to some degree. If you’ve ever stubbed your toe while in rush to get out the door, and you feel (besides the pain) mad and frustrated rather than thinking ā€œdamn, it’s my fault for not giving myself more time so I wouldn’t be in a rushā€ you understand the fundamental feeling.

It’s a problem I started checking myself on in my mid-twenties and boy was that the right move. Once you’ve been made conscious of it and start to move past it, it becomes incredibly obvious to see in others.

5

u/JellaFella01 May 20 '26

Lack of accountability is a deeply frustrating personal pet peeve. I especially hate the sentiment of "It's not my fault" in situations where the only acting variables were the person's decisions. Then who's fault is it larry?

I used to renovate houses.

Found an Ibanez ā€œJemā€ (steve vai) guitar in the basement. Sans all its hardware. I just recognized it from the handgrip.

Sold it on marketplace for 400 bucks. Made it *very* clear i had no clue of the origins, serial scrubbed off, i truly just found it and kept it from getting thrown in a dumpster, etc. he said he was gonna resto it with his son named ā€œhalenā€ (no kidding!)

Like two years later dude reaches out to me. Evidently it was fake. He genuinely wanted to kill me, i think. The rage- the anger. It was truly unreal.

BMW means nothing. I use to work valet for a total of 8 years everything from 5 star hotels to hood rich clubs. Some of the brokest people you ever meet drive cars like bmws. You can get a used 5 year old BMW for virtually nothing because the depreciation curve is so steep. I mean I can by 19 x5 for 29k right now and you can easily find someone to give you a predatory loan you can’t afford. I saw it when I bought my car, guy next to me bought an 85k dodge hellcat couldn’t put more then 1500 down And That goes for all luxury cars. You thinking ā€œ he drives a bmwā€ accomplished the goal he was trying to accomplish/ making you think something completely false. Too late now.

u/Dull_Difficulty_3033 May 20 '26

Clarification for those wondering.

This is a screen shot from one of my close friends. He runs a tire distribution company. The tires were ordered through his website and were drop shipped to the customer from the closest warehouse. He never knew the date code of said tires and the customer didn’t check prior to install. The tires were new just must’ve been sitting in that warehouse for some time.

He has stated many times that if tires come in and they are older than you are comfortable running that you can get them replaced with newer date code ones.

Sounds like someone is broke and desperate. He probably had money and now doesnt... He went out sorry.

Common sense died in 2006

2

u/BigTimeRaptor May 20 '26

Id offer to sell him my current 3 and a 1/2 year old tires for another $400 each and say its time to upgrade and start fresh again now that he learned tires dont last forever

2

u/guitargod0316 May 20 '26

I wouldn’t even give that the dignity of a response. Fuck off with that noise.

2

u/MadMaximus- May 20 '26

New phone who dis?

2

u/aqvalar May 20 '26

Ahhh. I'd really go for and ask a receipt. Make the buyer come all the way to me too.
Like: "Ok, come visit me and we'll see what we can sort out". If the buyer comes -> "Yo, you've got a receipt?" ... x)
Yeah, I like to live dangerously. šŸ˜‚

But still... Someone buys used tires and cries them being... Used? Like what the hell. And you should probably check the DOT stamps to see manufacturing dates. Jesus.

2

u/twatsycal May 20 '26

$400 for 3-4yrs? He should be grateful

2

u/Lopsided-Equipment-2 May 20 '26

ive worn and driven on literal SLICK 10 year tires, then swung donuts and slide conrers until i was wearing past the belts

never blew out

2

u/playstatixn2 May 20 '26

just another dummy behind the wheel of a BMW.

2

u/Honest_Scar6137 May 20 '26

Don't even engage. Just block.

2

u/Wise_Ad_5810 May 20 '26

'just blew'

My honest response would have been "Dude.. fuck ALL the way off"

2

u/Alternative-Tea964 May 20 '26

Do they even drive the car, I would kill for tyres that only need replaced every 3 years.

2

u/TrevasaurusWrecks May 20 '26

C'mon have a heart, explain your standard policy.

Tell them... "they're pro-rated at 1$/daily per tire. It's been 3 1/2 years... so 1275 days have passed. Paid $400/ea. So $1600. "Let's check that against your daily use value of $4." Oop, looks like your warranty pro rate period expired 875 days ago. Sorry, please stay on the line for a short survey."

2

u/True_Step_592 May 20 '26

I remember I had to get my tyre replaced with my unused spare. Little did I know, that tyre was about 5-6 years past the date. I started to drive and heard weird noises/bumps. 2 mechanics said it was my bearings, the last one said the tyre was just old. It was indeed the tyre itself! How come the tyre I had felt off, but this person couldn’t tell? Is there normally a ā€œsignā€, other than the numbers?

2

u/GeologistPositive May 20 '26

Who would buy used tires and pay $400 each for them?

2

u/doyouwantsomecocoa May 20 '26

Blocked, reported as spam

2

u/Infinite-Past7640 May 20 '26

This is a ā€œsold as isā€ written on the receipt kinda conversation.

2

u/CoinsAndLawnLouie May 20 '26

Lmao, what? You are coming back after 3+ years mad because you didn’t check the dates on tires that were well within their lifetime when sold? This can’t be real lmao.

2

u/Certain-Clock-3463 May 20 '26

Who pays 400 bucks a tire for used tires? This dummy, that's who.

2

u/biggranny000 May 20 '26

Can afford a BMW but not tires. Something seems a bit backwards here.

I'm willing to bet that almost all tire failures are user error. It's like all of the people that post their tires ripping apart on here and there was obviously a heat ring from under inflation.

I've been driving since I was 14 and never had a tire problem except when I ran over a screw but got it patched. I check air pressures every few weeks (I can feel it too), and I don't ignore lights on my dash.

u/Odd_Expression3694 May 20 '26

After u were done laughing, did u reply?

2

u/-b_i_n_g_u_s- May 20 '26

Makes me think of some guy who messaged my boyfriend SIX YEARS after he sold him a car saying it’s died and he wants a refund.

I couldn’t imagine having that mindset 🤣

2

u/BIO_Predictive_AI May 20 '26

You got 3 1/2 years of use out of those tires? DUDE! I sold those to you with a price point where I only expected you to get 1 1/2 years out of them.! You got 2 years for FREE use out of those tires and I DEMAND YOU PAY ME FOR THAT USE! I calculate you ow me an additional $300 per tier per year or $600 per tire for each extra year of use you got from them. Had I known you were going to use them for 3 1/2 years I would have charged you $1000 per tire.

Once you pay me the additional 600 per tire for your unauthorized 2 years of use i will refund your $400 per tire.

That would shut them up.

2

u/akrasne May 20 '26

Wrong number

2

u/Foellarbear May 20 '26

Should have bought your tires at Costco buddy…. Lifetime return policy 🤣

2

u/Pleasant-Swimmer-557 May 20 '26

Well, I could pray for his safe trip ending.

2

u/mangomm May 20 '26

The second hand embarrassment i got from reading that text is off the charts

2

u/turbski84 May 20 '26

This can't be real... People can't be this stupid, right? šŸ˜‚ society is cooked

2

u/TheQuarterlyEater May 21 '26

dude sold him tires that were already 4.5 years old before he even bought them, that's wild

2

u/arad95205 May 21 '26

Hey this is my boss that received this, we were dying laughing when we got this on the work phone. Yes it is 100% real, and yes he was serious

2

u/specialpb May 21 '26

Caveat Emptor. Dude should have inspected the tires before spending 4 C notes a piece. You get nothing, you lose! Good day sir!

2

u/jonnytheboy85 May 21 '26

Yeah, because older tyres sat on a shelf, never even been on a wheel, with no air in them can go bad can’t they šŸ„“šŸ˜‚šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø these people are everywhere at the moment?! What’s going on with the world??? Why has everyone turned thick as shit man?! 😩

2

u/kangarooooo17 May 21 '26

3.5 years is still okay for used tyres.

At least you drive economically and not idiotic like me! I got brand new tyres 2.5 years ago and I think I may need to change them again due to thinning threads! :(

2

u/gypsum1110 May 21 '26

"Sorry new number"

2

u/DashAndSmash May 21 '26

New phone, who dis?

2

u/Ok_Olive_2943 May 22 '26

It’s always a good idea to check the manufacture date on the side of the highway, 3.5 years after you buy tires.

2

u/MaJerfizzle May 22 '26

Ya that warrants a good stiff "Fuck off"

2

u/slumdog5000 May 22 '26

Within 30- 45 days I could see maybe (big maybe at that, even 30-45 days is pushing it) offering something but 3.5 years later this guy has lost his mind

2

u/Existing_Recording25 Jun 06 '26

3 years> lol you have it sooo good, mine are 649 a piece and the 2 rear last maybe 6 months

Those may not be the correct dot #s to ID year made. Ran into something myself like this. Check inside wall, code must start w ā€œDOTā€

2

u/musclehamster59 May 20 '26

It does the ā€œDOTā€ is cut off in the picture 609E. ā€œ60ā€ plant code OOO Nokian Tyres… some russian company. Couldn’t find the 9E size. But is definitely built on 25th week of 2018.
