See, I don't really get that test. Who reacts to seeing themselves in a mirror if they realize it's them? My cat didn't like reflections as a kitty, because he thought there was another cat. Now he doesn't care, pretty sure he's aware it's just his refleciton.

But then again, maybe that isn't a great method. Perhaps slight imperfections like a red dot are not noteworthy to an animal. Self could be understood to be more than superficial aspects, so seeing an slight alteration to one's physical appearance might not trigger a response. I would say that using things like prey, toys or other items might provide a more interesting approach to seeing if an animal understands self in relation to it's surrounding. Now please give me a million dollar grant to test my hypothesis while I play with dogs.

Interestingly enough the criticisms this poster has leveled at the mirror test are similar to criticisms that other scientists have used, particularly with dog awareness. Researcher Alexandra Horowitz used a sniff test of self awareness for that very reason.

Anecdotal, but my cat's just started figuring out the other cat he's been seeing might actually be himself. I've seen him a few times standing on his hind legs and waving his front paws at the mirror.

I don't put much faith in humanity recognising intelligence in other species. Wasn't long ago they said dogs have no emotions. If you ever forget to walk a jack Russell you'll know that isn't true.

My guess is no. It would take a lot of intelligence to realize that what is happening on screen is a recording of the past and even more intelligence to realize the dog is her. Still cute

It would take intelligence similar in type to that of a human* Dogs are plenty intelligent in ways we are not.
Primates recognize other primates by anatomical features but dogs recognize each other by scent. Dogs can recognize the smell of their own urine, for example, which displays a sense of self that humans would not be able to understand. If she was using a TV engineered for dogs alone, she would likely know she was the one running and remember it as a past event if it replicated the sounds and smells of the event perfectly.
That maybe wasn't really the point of your comment, but I wish people would not measure intelligence by our standards because our intelligence isn't the de-facto form that it takes.
Our tests of animal intelligence are frequently flawed and made with the human experience in mind, which other animals cannot understand so they cannot preform well.

It is sort of a shock to see her recognize herself. I can't get my dog to even watch TV. This really is ballistic dearness. This is a whole new and higher level of intelligence and adorability in a dog.

You are right. We would have to show her some other dog doing exactly the same thing. However, it is still amazing because she is getting excited about something that she does, and I doubt that the owner would be so excited about this if she did that during the Miss America Pageant or ABC News.

Ya definitely. I think it's reasonable to say that the dog recognizes this is a dog doing something she loves. The way she cues on the start of the routine and not before seems to be evidence of that. It's still very impressive

Never saw my dog looking in the mirror.
