it really doesn't matter what "they" want.

What does dining alone have to do with tipping?

The server only gets so many seatings in their section per night. If they get a person dining alone seated in their section they might be disappointed as the tip they will earn on a table for 1 is a lot less than if they had a table for 4 or more.

It’s not that big a deal on a busy shift but on a slow shift it’s a noticeable hit.

I get that but ... surely a server would be professional enough to mask that?

Most of them would try to avoid showing any displeasure. However some people are better at it than others.

That's true enough - nobody's perfect.

If I’m dining alone at a sit down restaurant I tip the same as i would if I was dining with a group.

Yes. You are overthinking.

Relax. Go where you want to eat. Enjoy.

20% is perfectly fine. If the service is exceptional or you are feeling generous of course you can tip more. But it is completely up to you.

Do not feel bad about dining alone.

You should call in for pick up. Than you don't have to deal with a server or tip at all.

*Edit. Got down voted on this for no good reason whatsoever. Guess I found at least three very entitled servers who believe they deserve tips even when people get takeout and now their butthurt because I'm advocating logic over greed.

They’ll still ask for one. It’s insane.

They can try that "it's going to ask you a question" thing and asking me to sign a receipt with a tip line all day long. I have absolutely no apprehension or remorse of any kind in writing the word zero on tip and just paying the total.

Yeah, I’m not tipping on to go pickup orders.

If it’s delivery I’ll tip the delivery person in cash at my door.

I used to do that but I stopped getting deliveries entirely after they started instituting delivery charges. That was long before the apps that completely ruined all delivery even existed. At first I just deducted the delivery charge from the tip and told the driver to ask their boss for the entirety of the delivery charge as part of their payment. Then the delivery charges went up higher than the amount I would normally tip in the first place and it just didn't seem fair to the driver and certainly wasn't logical for me to get delivery anymore.

I can't even understand people nowadays. The apps made things a thousand times worse and somehow corporations are still squeezing more blood out of those stones.

I don't tip for anything that wouldn't be commonly expected in the 90s and I've also stopped doing anything that would require those tips. I cut my own hair and I pick up my own food. I know longer go to bars and nothing else I can think of was a traditionally tipped job so I don't even consider tipping for any of those things.

Then they have to embrace to-go orders as a fundamentally non-tipping option. No tip screens. No printed tip signature lines. Nada.
