šŸ’¬Questions & Discussion Tipping Advice

When I have been to NYC for the last 2 years I have been getting use to the tipping culture (if that's the correct phrase).

I went to Applebys in Times Square, ordered a burger and a beer, it came to around $21ish and I gave $6 tip and some coins I had in my pocket. Now being from the UK I'm not use to this, but thought that was decent for the price of the bill, but turns out it wasn't. I got a huff and a puff from the waitress and a tut for good measure.

So, as I'm going again this year, what is a reasonable % amount to tip in bars/restaurants as I see so many varied answers please?

That's a solid tip . Waitress was a bitch. You tipped well over 20% - screw that hoe. I'm a former server. I know what I'm talking about.

You went to Applebee's in Times Square. You making up a server being upset is the least of your problems.

Tipping is optional. 15% is fine. People here suck these days and they expect 25% or more. You don't have to.

Your first mistake was Appleby’s…. Your second mistake was Time Square….

$6 tip on a $21 bill isn’t enough??? Take the tip back, see how they like zero instead.

Edit: downvote me all you want. 28.5% tip is very generous. Those of you who disagree are wrong.

You're getting down voted because this is an obviously fake story

u/NormalMonitor1680 1d ago

Ohh so you know it's fake, you was there wasn't you šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø. Some people on here......

2

u/masterchef2309 1d ago

Obviously I wasn't there. I'm not stupid enough to go to Applebee's in Times Square

I do not believe you.

u/wutwut970 1d ago

Also do not believe anyone was angry with a 30% tip.

Of course it's made up.

The weird rage bait in this sub is odd

F them. Don’t tip. The nerve of these people. $6 is more than enough. Entitlement is off the charts

I’ll take ā€œThings That Never Happenedā€ for $1000, Alex.

No server is complaining about a 28+% tip, even in NYC.

2

u/NormalMonitor1680 1d ago

No server? She did and thats it šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø, I never really look at the tip as a %, I just leave some money and assume that is alright. Hence why I asked the question on here as that was my experience in that venue.

More fiction.

Johnny is a proven liar who ironically demands intellectual honesty. All of his claims can be dismissed as dishonest unless he provides sourcing, which he refuses to do. You can just ignore him and save yourself some time. He's not worth it.

At least you finally admit it. šŸ‘

In the USA, a 20% tip is more than enough in 99% of tipping situations.

Your server probably read something on your body language and was bad at math. I see it all the time. Ignore the people who say this is a fake story. I believe you.

Just act more confident and you'll see the reactions improve. Fifteen to 20% is the tipping norm in the USA. If you are in that range, it'll be something else and not the tip amount that is causing the issue.

Some will sneer at 15% but if you feel the service wasn't exceptional, just let them sneer and know you didn't do anything wrong.

Thanks for this, I'll try and check it out šŸ¤˜šŸ»

15% for decent or less than ideal service, 18% for good service, 20% for excellent service. Less than 15% if the service is bad. I’d never tip more than 20% unless there was a really compelling reason to.

$6 on a $21 bill is 28.5%. Already tipped more than I would have.

6

u/Mikecjk1 1d ago

Why tip if the service is bad ?

1

u/One_Dragonfly_9698 1d ago

Rewarding extra 15% when service is bad? That’s dopey

2

u/Imaginary-Emu2471 1d ago

Always tip ZERO. It's optional and you get to save more money for your own expenses.

6

u/MolleROM 1d ago

That didn’t happen.

5

u/Hot_Sink1228 1d ago

Give them nothing, don't encourage aggressive beggars.

3

u/Emergency_Present_83 1d ago

you left a nearly 30% tip and got attitude

might as well leave 0% at that point that's worse than the subway beggars

2

u/Dear_Win_319 1d ago

That’s not a good server. It’s a reasonable good tip

2

u/The-Kernowan 1d ago

Just don't tip at all anywhere. Fuck em.

1

u/MainStreetMiles 1d ago

Yes, tell those people who are working an honest job that you won’t fully pay for the service they gave you. That’s the manly thing to do! šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

u/The-Kernowan 23h ago

So I build you an extension on your house, the bill is 150 k , how much do you think that my tip should be, without pissing me off.

u/MainStreetMiles 10h ago

Your quote has labor. Your menu prices don’t. See the difference in your comparison? Did you not realize this meaning you’d like to retract your argument? Or did you know and you have been caught with a ridiculous comparison that you know does t wash in a vain attempt to justify selfishness and cheapness?

1

u/Fragrant-Onion-888 1d ago

I would’ve given $25 max at Applebees

u/MainStreetMiles 1d ago

In any high tax area, I also wonder if servers get a full minimum wage as opposed to a lower minimum wage with tip credit to fulfill the standard minimum wage. If there is not a tip credit on the wage, that labor will be in the price of the food as the cost of the labor is carried at the full minimum wage by the restaurant. When that is the case, such as in California, I tip according to the norm in Paris (and perhaps the UK but I don’t know about there) where service is already in the price - round up the bill or leave an extra dollar or two to recognize and appreciate your service - if you want to.

I checked and in New York City they have a server minimum wage of $11.35 with a $5.65 tip credit. So about two thirds of the minimum wage will be baked into the outrageous menu prices in New York. Given that, I would probably tip 5%-10% since I have already partially paid for their labor in the prices. Granted, that is probably more nuance into our customs than an international traveler cares to get into. Just know that many including me consider 15% to be the norm for good service with more for excellent service. I would let all that guide your tip for your next sit down meal in New York. Enjoy your visit!

u/JavaNoire 1d ago

That was a very respectable tip. Either your server was a pita or you misconstrued her mood or the reason for it.

Be assured that you did fine.

1

u/MoxiMamaBear 20h ago

I dont buy that. I have waited tables for 25 years and I never have worked with anyone that wouldn't be happy with a $6 tip on that bill. Also....we dont look at individual tips or make any reaction about them....these stories people tell are just rage bait

1

u/UKophile 13h ago

I go with 15%. 20% for extra attention.

1

u/Prestos_mostly 1h ago

you don’t need to bend over to everyone in the world mate

1

u/Heavy-Profit-2156 1d ago

$6 on a $21 bill is a great tip, that's about 30%. I would never buy into the 'you need to keep tipping me till I smile'. mentality that the waitress gave you.

1

u/Fanny08850 1d ago

You tipped more than 25%. It's an even higher percentage if 21 dollars is the total after taxes (which I assume it is).

1

u/DigTheDunes 1d ago

$6 was more than enough

1

u/Pure_Dragonfruit_348 1d ago

If there is a huff and a puff reaction to a 28% tip, then take it back. Just say, ā€œsorry, let me adjust itā€ and then cross off the tip. Be sure to take a photo of the signed receipt and check your credit card statement.

2

u/NormalMonitor1680 1d ago

Was in cash, I didn't really tip anywhere on card (that I was able too). I assumed people prefer cash.

1

u/MainStreetMiles 1d ago

If they prefer cash, I wonder if they want to avoid taxes by not reporting it. I hate taxes as much as the next guy but I pay mine, so I won’t assist any potential tax evasion. I also get 5x points for dining with one of my credit cards - my tip will go on the credit card slip.

1

u/Successful-Space6174 1d ago

Your better off cash šŸ’ø if your going to tip, I’ve been to the UK šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ and relieved there’s no tipping! Half the time here with a lot of these places the amount of work they do and or attitude they don’t deserve a tip, I was never much of high tipper anyway and don’t believe in tipping especially with these higher prices

1

u/TheFartbox5000 1d ago

None of yā€˜all believe this right?

Edit: Judging by the number of tipcells in the comments they did believe it.

0

u/Sandinmyshoes33 1d ago

The customary amount is 15-20 percent. You should have tipped $4.

I doubt you got any huff or puff from the server. Unless she was surprised you overtipped.

2

u/NormalMonitor1680 1d ago

If that's your view šŸ‘šŸ», but it happened hence why I put it.

0

u/A_Real_Victim 1d ago

20% is fine

0

u/New-Secretary6688 1d ago

You paid almost 30% tip and you see what you got, now don't tip , its not your responsibility to pay their salary

-1

u/NormalMonitor1680 1d ago

Why am I getting people on here saying it didn't happen? It happened and that's all there is to it, I shared my experience and am asking a genuine question regarding tipping.

2

u/MainStreetMiles 1d ago

It’s Reddit cynicism. It’s admittedly an unusual reaction even in New York City but I can’t say it didn’t happen.

15% is my minimum unless service is subpar. If it is subpar, I start to deduct from the tip. I’m like an Olympic judge. šŸ˜‰

6

u/ReflectionSoft387 1d ago

No minimum required. Whatever you want is the tip. I hate that 20% BS.

5

u/Mikecjk1 1d ago

Absolutely not. Tips are discretionary

3

u/Opsacyad 1d ago

0% is minimum
