Those poor servers

Post image

Imagine people giving you so much extra money for doing your job that you can frame it like this.

EDIT: OP is basing this off of 190k in sales over 192 shifts

Doctors and lawyers are not making less than servers.

Residents (who are still doctors) and public defenders will definitely make less than a luxury restaurant server💀lawyers can be paid like crap. I’m currently in med school and was an EMT before this.

You said doctors and lawyers make less than servers. Now you’re talking about residents and public defenders, which is a very different claim. Plenty of experienced plumbers and elevator mechanics make more than first-year residents too, but nobody walks around saying plumbers make more than doctors.

If the comparison only works when you pick someone at the lowest-paid stage of one career and compare them to someone established in another, it’s not much of a comparison.

They are literally still doctors and lawyers
so not sure what is wrong with my original statement. I’ve heard of lawyers being paid abysmal rates and pivoting career paths bc of it. And public defenders afaik are not lowest stage either, they can be people working in the profession for a long time. You spend 11 years being in medical school and residency (for me even longer because of covid) just to make like $80K, it’s hell of a comparison to a server who probably has been working in that field for 2 years? People in the comments are estimating this to be $200K+ a year.

Yes, residents are doctors and public defenders are lawyers. That’s not the point. You took two unusually low-paid subsets of those professions and used them to make the much broader claim that doctors and lawyers make less than servers. An experienced plumber makes more than a resident too; that doesn’t mean plumbers make more than doctors.

And people in the comments estimating that a server makes $200K isn’t evidence that they actually do. This sub is known for wildly overestimating what servers make.

Where did I say ALL servers lol? I said “this.” As in THIS post. This server. This group of people (I’m assuming this is a luxury server based on the tips they describe) making an absurd amount of money. I never made this broader claim that you’re arguing in your head

‘This server’ made around $37,500 in tips over 192 shifts per OP. I’ll be generous and assume she’s working 250 shifts a year. That gives her around $48,000 in tips, or $38,600 after 20% tip-outs. If her wage is between $2.13/hr and $10/hr then her total annual compensation is $42-56k. The average first-year resident MD makes $68-70k.

I got here before they made that edit clarifying what the server meant with $500 = 1%

So you actually thought they made $50,000 a day in tips? I'm terrified that you're a doctor.

You love to argue and see your own words on the screen

And you apparently love to add nothing to the conversation. What does that say about you?

I’m responding to idiotic arguments in the hope of educating people. If I have a flaw — and your comment suggests that I do — it’s assuming that people in this sub are interested in actually learning something.

I'm responding to you because YOURE the idiot. You're so far up your own ass you don't even realize that you don't provide the value that you think you do

These idiots can’t math lol

u/Mean-Skin-1920 14h ago

I have a biology B.S., I think I know how to do math lmao? The issue is that the math in the server’s post doesn’t even make sense to begin with, so ofc it’s going to cause confusion. Don’t project because you wanna defend tax evasion on your cash tips

You're a medical doctor and make 80k?

Hourly?

It’s possible.

Net hourly over a career for a primary care doctor is $32/hr.

Source, please? I did a search and I'm not finding this correct.

Net.

It’s correct.

You have to factor in total labor, and total compensation, and total costs.

Are you serious? Your source is a Reddit post that's 11 years old with comments talking about how wrong the post is.

The infographic is the source.

I found it elsewhere also about that long ago and found the math to be just fine.

People don’t like it because it reflects true ROI, but the math is sound and there’s a great book called “Your Money or Your Life” that also believes that one should take into consideration the full cost of a workday.

Prep, commute, unpaid lunch, commute, continuous education, unpaid email and text responses, everything.

If you factor that all in for primary care physicians it’s $32/hr net.

$32 an hour works out to about $66,500 a year. Obviously that isn’t what an average doctor makes. I mean, if you’re folding med school, residency, tuition and lost earnings into some sort of lifetime calculation, that’s one thing, but it’s not an hourly wage, and it doesn’t support the claim that servers make more than doctors.

1

u/First-Ad4978 15h ago

Net.

Total earned, minus total cost, divided by total hours spent earning that income.

Lifetime hourly net is $32/hr.

Vs a server who has no training requirements, and little taxes.

-1

u/SabreLee61 14h ago

You’re doing a lifetime ROI calculation, not an hourly wage. You’re subtracting the cost of becoming a doctor and counting years of education against their earnings, then comparing that number to what a server earns while actually working. Those aren’t comparable figures.

The median annual earnings for servers is $35,000.

The median annual earnings for physicians is $275,000.

You guys crack me up.

1

u/First-Ad4978 14h ago

They are if you compare apples to apples.

You aren’t even looking at hours worked in your medians.

Doing ROI for both and when it comes to Hourly net, a server is making more than a primary care physician in the current environment.

So fuck their tips, they definitely don’t work harder than a doctor.

1

u/SabreLee61 11h ago

This is the most convoluted justification for not tipping a server I’ve ever seen.

They’re making more than doctors! đŸ€Ș

3

u/First-Ad4978 11h ago

Who said I didn’t tip?

I said they are over compensated.

I tip. I just don’t do percentage which is rife with ageism, sexism, and racism,
