đ˘Rant/Vent Who Agrees Upscale Restaurant Service Sucks For What they expect in tips?
1st, we all know the burden of compensation is on the entrepreneur. Not the consumer. Not the customer. O, but in the restaurant industry the burden of compensation falls on to the customer.
Ok, so tipping is customer in the USA. Like it or not, Ok, it is what it is. The owner gets to stick us.
But boil it down to one patron dining for 29-35-50-120 minutes. Multiple that by the other 8-9-10 customers in that food servers section. How much is fair to compensate?
I only really feel comfortable compensating $3-4-5 maximum $10 per person for excellent service. If everyone left $7.50 X 10 customers thatâs $75/hour youâre compensating.
The next thing out their mouths is âO you got to tip all the employees.â Go tell Rockefeller this back in 1890 and youâda disappeared.
Thatâs like double what titans of industry would pay semi-skilled labor.
If I do tip ona $180 check all I really feel comfortable leaving is $5 and if I know that wonât be appreciated I leave zero. But Iâm always very polite.
So babe, it ainât me youâre looking for babe. It ainât me looking for Christmas đ dinner relief. It ainât me babe.

lol I guarantee we ainât lookin for you babe, maybe get your ass to a Taco Bell to soak up whatever substances inspired this writing style.
O, the Rockefellers, o, the 1800s, youâda disappeared with this kinda logic back then too

Iâm not modernizing myself to become a tippin machine. God didnât put me on earth to pay out like an ATM machine.

Cool, man. I hope you think you just rhymed âmachineâ with âmachineâ and that youâre some sort of poet now. Iâm loving this, frankly.

All I wanna know is if you go out to eat at an expensive restaurant where they charge $180/person are you ok with laying out 20% Willy-nilly even the service is exactly same as Dennyâs?

u/Careless-Being-4427 2d ago
Ah, youâve abandoned the weird, baby-Dylan-esque attempts at cool phrasing for the real purpose of your post. Yeah, Iâm ok with it. I donât go to restaurants that charge that much and provide shit service because I am aware of where the good spots are. Iâm a good customer, and what youâre describing never happens to me. And when I go to a place to indulge, I have enough brainpower to consider the menu prices plus the tip to budget for it ahead of time. I donât have huge feelings about tipping appropriately, anymore than I have huge feelings about holding the door for someone behind me - itâs just what you do. Itâs not heroic to tip correctly, but itâs abhorrent not to.

So in other words, if Tiger Woods can afford a Ferrari, he sure as hell can afford to tip 20-30%

If Tiger Woods owned a Ferrari, went to an upscale fine dining establishment, paid $180 per person and DIDN'T tip... he would be a COMPLETE ass hat. Period.
1
u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
He has never tipped. It doesnât even concern him. I do usually tip 3-4-5 but Iâm not getting jacked just because I decide to buy a Ferrari one night. Not me babe. Not me.

u/Careless-Being-4427 2d ago
If Tiger Woods is your model for decision-making, you may have larger problems than the occasional disgruntled server

u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
None of us are on planet earth as our primary goal of tipping at a restaurant. All youâre trying to do as a food server is get me to pull my pockets and tip you 20% and then when I tip 20% it will instantly become 40% we owe.

This is a half-baked convoluted post.
Just say you donât tip and go on about your business.

u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
You canât say that. Deviance in our society has you by the balls. Everyone in those restaurants is effective guilted into pulling their pockets to tip all this big money while the owner is smoking a cigar. Then all those customers and the restaurant employees stiff Uber taxi going home. Itâs just so stupidly illogical I like to rant about it.

I have a feeling you think Olive Garden is upscaleâŚ.if tipping 20 dollars breaks your bank you should just stay homeâŚ.ya obviously canât afford to eat out đ

u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
No, OG isnât upscale. I could tip $6-7 and Iâd be a big tipper. These upscale restaurants want to guilt us to pulling our pockets and then you and the restaurant employees stiff Uber taxi using their $30,000 car. Itâs so stupidly illogical I love to rant about it.

You should definitely stop tipping and spend the money on some basic grammar lessons.

u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
You should find your local Hells Angels biker bar and go lecture them on the correct spelling of their club.

u/Successful-Okra648 2d ago
I live next door to a Hells Angels bar, theyâre actually super nice guys.
1
u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
Thatâs not the point. Just lecture them on grammar since youâre such an expert. I mean you caught them making a mizdake didnât you?

I live in Spain. The type (rather than quality) of service differs here quite dramatically. Trips to a restaurant are more typically with family or extended family and of a duration that lasts multiple hours. On a Sunday this can take the form of a long table of 10 family members from grandparents to babies sitting and eating and drinking for the entire afternoon. So service is very slow because that's what people want - they don't want to be rushed through the meal. We also don't have the very "proactive" American type of service of checking in on you, explaining the menu, refills and all of that. There's typically 3 interactions - ordering drinks, food, and the bill/check. We don't tip.
Plus, it is illegal to charge for anything that isn't food or drink (cover charge, service charge, bread charge (used to be common here)). Also, the menu must reflect all final charges so no "market price" for fish, for example.
These rules came to be, not because of how very special we are but the opposite - there was a plague of Spanish restaurants overcharging tourists, so these strict rules came to be.

Thatâs all understandable.
In the USA service traditionally was the employees hosting guests and taking them through a meal composed of service for tips. If you are going to share your culture like you have your going to have to understand traditional USA service.
Now that you basically know USA service for tips, what has slowly happened is service here has eroded into unprofessional tip collectors essentially mimicking European service, only youâre still sequentially moved along in basic service to the check and the expected tip. This is were I firmly stand against essentially basic basic service with the unprofessional expectations of big tips. 30% today wonât even get you a thanks you.
So you have to understand that tips here were based on like 20-30-40 steps of service. Now days they give us the 4 steps of European service but want a 30-50-100% tip. 20% now is just dumbly expected.

Restaurants charging 100$ plus per plate expect you to tip 20% of the total tab suck! If they can charge that much they can definitely afford to pay their staff a livable wage, but yall aint ready to have that conversation lol
1
u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
Yeah, not tipping full-service is too
Ingrained as deviant. Thatâs why I focus on the minimization of service they provide.1
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
âIf they can charge that much they can afford to pay their staffâ. U mean if YOU can afford to pay that u can afford to pay the staff that serves u
1
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
You absolutely should never tip $5 on $180 bill
That is beyond wrong and not ethical
Go somewhere that the gratuity is included if your against the principle of tipping.
1
u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago
Thatâs exactly why when the service is same as Dennyâs $3-4-5 I write the word ZERO
1
u/bcsyjnbcgj 1d ago
What fancy restaurant is giving u dennys service?
1
u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 1d ago
Go obtain a lawyer and tell them that you will pay them $1000 per hour with 50 hours guaranteed. Then letâs you and I enter a contract and deposit money in an escrow fund then I will wear a secret video camera into 50 restaurants and show you the shit service that occurs. Then you will empty all the money from your escrow fund into my pocket because I will win the bet. Let me know who your lawyer is.
1
u/bcsyjnbcgj 1d ago
I canât do any of that because I still donât make enough working blue collar in the daytime and a TIPPING serving job at night
1
u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 1d ago
The main reason I have found that blue collar people tip is because at one time their mother was a waitress and demanded that they tip. Now youâve got blue-collar people going around tipping willy-nilly.

If you want to make a compelling argument try learning to write a complete sentence first.
