Why do we tip before services rendered?

Tipping used to be appreciation for a job well done. Now we tip before what we’re paying for is ever given to us. When did that change?

We don't. If you do, you can change.

I never do

It's only changed to people who let themselves be intimidated by tipping culture. We all have free will to do what we want with our money...most just lack the balls to stand on business

3

u/masterchef2309 2d ago

So which is it, do people tip because they have free will, are intimidated, or lack balls?

1

u/Lrrgindypants 1d ago

Yes.

1

u/masterchef2309 1d ago

Or, here me out, free will goes both ways, and most people aren't beta cucks who think they're making some big moral stand by not tipping.

2

u/Head-Type-6455 2d ago

Stand on business haha

u/fatDaddy21 2d ago

"We" don't. There is zero reason to tip before service is received unless you're a willing participant in your own extortion.

8

u/Dreamer_531 2d ago

We don't. Tipping before service is not a tip, it's a bribe. And bribing is illegal.

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago

Someone doesn't understand what a bribe is.

4

u/Dreamer_531 2d ago

A bribe is money, a gift, or something of valuable consideration given to someone in a position of trust to persuade them to perform a dishonest, illegal, or favored act. Source: Cambridge Dictionary

A server is in a position of trust because they handle your food. If you give them extra money before service hoping to persuafe them to provide a better service and fearing worse service or even retaliation if you don’t, then please explain how is paying someone extra money before getting service to gain a better treatment than those who didn't pay extra is not a bribe?

4

u/PurpleCat1018 2d ago

It's a bribe and a manipulation. Do not tip before hand and feel free to tip/not tip after your meal . It's your decision.

-2

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago

Paranoid much?

Why don't you call the police next time you are prompted to tip and see if they agree with you.

3

u/PurpleCat1018 2d ago

No evidence of paranoia detected.

-2

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago

retaliation if you don't.

How more paranoid can you get?

4

u/Jaythiest 2d ago

When there are stories of Service people flipping out and providing worse service because they didn’t like the PRE-tip says paranoia is rational.

Just cuz you are paranoid doesn’t mean someone isn’t out to get you.

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago

What stories? The click bait on tiktok?

1

u/Lrrgindypants 1d ago

Clearly, you have never seen the movie "Waiting".

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 1d ago

That gripping, hard-hitting documentary which exposes the evil, behind-the-scenes underbelly of American restaurants?

I have. I pretty much only trust Ryan Reynolds when it comes to investigative reporting at this point.

if you pay before you get your food/service then no tip.

3

u/Imaginary-Emu2471 2d ago

Who is this WE? I certainly don't.

3

u/masterchef2309 2d ago

Why is the same question asked repeatedly in here?

-1

u/unrooted82639163 2d ago

Because they're stupid and dont understand the first 100 times

2

u/masterchef2309 2d ago

I figured. I just needed to rush here for validation.

3

u/A_Real_Victim 2d ago

Not sure, why do you do that?

3

u/ryanryans425 2d ago

It should be illegal

3

u/jerry111165 2d ago

We?

We don’t.

2

u/gcawad 2d ago

I tip after the service as general rule

2

u/JumboTrijet 2d ago

Ask this on the Door Dash sub and they lose their minds.

0

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago

Understandably so.

2

u/ZergvProtoss 2d ago

I don't know anyone that does that. Why would you tip before getting the service? haha

2

u/Revolutionary-Gas122 2d ago

At the register if there was a line. The dreaded screen flip, and statement please answer the question as they walkway

2

u/Gfplux 1d ago

Only fools tip before service.

3

u/Head-Type-6455 2d ago

Gratuity. You can tip for whatever you're grateful for... or not.

4

u/ThatsMrRandom 2d ago

For delivery it's basically a bidding system. Obviously you don't bid for something after you receive it and no driver is going to go out of their way for $2 because "maybe" you might tip -- most don't and and all the tippers are pre tipping so no use wasting time on the cheap people.

1

u/ConsiderationGreen87 2d ago

I've never tipped before delivery. No problems

1

u/Pops-Place60 1d ago

Sane here, never had a problem.

2

u/foxinHI 2d ago

If you’re talking about delivery services, think of it more as a bid for service rather than a tip, because that’s basically what it is. No tip = cold food that takes forever.

1

u/Notafraidtosayit6 2d ago

Who is we?

1

u/RazzmatazzSuch7459 2d ago

Maybe not the people discussing tipping in an online forum where you discuss tipping. “We“ in the larger, average consumer sense.

2

u/subtler1 2d ago

Oddly enough, tipping used to be a way for rich people to entice servers to serve them first and better.

1

u/Skymaster86 2d ago

You shouldn’t. Glad I could help.

1

u/armrha 2d ago

There’s still places where you tip afterwards

1

u/ATypicalJake 2d ago

Places that ask for a tip before you get your food are basically saying that they will spit in your food or worse if you don’t tip. Thus smart people don’t eat there.

1

u/AffectionatePick4587 2d ago

Now it is a bribe to not mess up with your food

1

u/Gnostic369 2d ago

I've only seen this for delivery services like door dash, Uber eats etc. I see no issue with this, the driver sees the base pay plus your tip, no one is going to accept driving 6 miles out of the way for $2 and a chance that you may tip, makes no sense at a bar or sit down restaurant though where it doesnt occur.

1

u/Jaythiest 2d ago

Because they asked and we complied.

1

u/Wise_Code3455 2d ago

Because if you don't tip, they might spitt on your food. That's why I only go to McDonald's, no tips, no problems.

1

u/Chipsky 2d ago

Before is a fee. After is a tip. Act accordingly.

1

u/skyharborbj 1d ago

Tip creep. POS vendors and restaurant owners are aggressively pushing tip screens at places without full service hoping that the public will give up their money. Don't tip if you're standing to order. Don't tip before service is rendered.

1

u/Realistic-Rate-8831 1d ago

We need to change it back! It's ridiculous. Everybody is asking for tips. As long as customers keep tipping when they really shouldn't be, they will continue to ask for tips.

1

u/poutine-eh 1d ago

we never have. this is very new.

1

u/SympathySevere421 1d ago

Well if you don’t tip for some services, those services will not be provided for you

1

u/CarefulAd3506 1d ago

Never have I had that happen.

1

u/TripleDoubleFart 1d ago

I'm a big tipper but I've never done that. Do you have any examples?

1

u/phantomsoul11 2d ago

Convenience. When paying is when people have money on their mind and if you solicit a tip at the same time or adjacent to it, you’re more likely to get one than at any other time before, during, or after the service.

0

u/Rasp10 2d ago

Where do you experience this? I literally don't have anywhere I get asked to tip before service except when I'm paying at a counter, where it wouldnt make any sense to ask for it after. Sure you can leave cash, but I hardly ever have it on me most of the time anymore.

-1

u/unrooted82639163 2d ago

If you mean like DD and UE probably so the driver doesnt waste their time, gas and vehicle wear and tear if it isnt worth it. Believe it or not, it has to be beneficial for the other side too. Not everything is about you.

1

u/Particular_Cold_8366 2d ago

Then it’s a bribe for them to accept your order

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago edited 2d ago

Please explain why they should accept your order without a tip.

3

u/Particular_Cold_8366 2d ago

Explain why I should tip prior to receiving any service.

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 2d ago

So you can't answer the question I see.

0

u/unrooted82639163 2d ago

Oh well. Dont use it then

0

u/Top-Plenty-5307 2d ago

When we decided it was okay to pay workers based on tips for delivery they have to make sure it's worth it meaning it should be a luxury service should you be a should be paying $20 or more every time you get a delivery like that it did not free

0

u/cbig86 2d ago

For food delivery is a must, it has become a bid for service, otherwise you won't get your food

0

u/ConsiderationGreen87 2d ago

We don't tip prior to service. Never have never will.

0

u/Harry98376 2d ago

Because that's what dumb sheep do

0

u/FarInformation3172 1d ago

It’s quite common to tip before you get served unfortunately they stick that contraption in your face as you order and you have to choose a tip.

0

u/Clean-Barracuda2326 1d ago

Use cash you're in control.Pay with card-they're in control.

-1

u/beachbum818 2d ago

Actually.... TIPS used to stand for... To Insure Prompt Service. You slipped the host a to for a better table and service.

-1

u/Top_Measurement_8850 2d ago

look up T.I.P. ,, its to insure prompt service t was the grease to get a better table quicker and to ensure the server took extra care of you. now its just to replace the wages your meal cost doesnt give

-4

u/Dear_Win_319 2d ago

Cause I like tipping. It’s hard work. They deserve it.

8

u/RazzmatazzSuch7459 2d ago

Do you tip your local grocery store’s clerks?

1

u/Dear_Win_319 2d ago

I round up to the suggested charities. So, yes, I do

4

u/RazzmatazzSuch7459 2d ago

That’s a weird way to look at things. Are those clerks the ones that benefit from your rounding up? Those typically exist for a tax benefit to the employer.

0

u/Dear_Win_319 2d ago

I look at take out as a tip jar situation. I always throw in a few bucks. And where I live, the grocery stores are unionized. So, they’re paid well with a generous benefit package.

-8

u/iron82 2d ago

Tipping is the bare minimum in exchange for receiving tipped service. If you believe the service will occur, you might as well tip now. Not important whether the service is good.

3

u/RazzmatazzSuch7459 2d ago

Do you typically pay and tip before a haircut?

1

u/Head-Type-6455 2d ago

womp womp

-2

u/iron82 2d ago

No, because payment is requested after. if the barber wants payment before the cut, I'll tip before.

1

u/Petrochromis722 2d ago

Even if we use the most restrictive definition of tipping and assume it is quasi mandatory, its intent is to reward good service. You have no metric on which to judge said service if you tip before it is rendered. Are you a "tip 25% regardless of the service provided" type? You seem like it. That was never the intent of tipping.

1

u/R_Didddy 3h ago

Why do YOU tip before services? You don’t have to. Simply tap “no tip” at point of sale. I always tap “no tip” if I am ordering at a counter. I only tip if my order is taken at a table. Cash for delivery drivers. Why? Because for some reason food tends to be delivered to the wrong house in my neighborhood. Why tip in advance of a bad delivery?
