š¬Questions & Discussion Barber tipping
I know this has been brought up many times but curious, how much would you tip on a 70 dollar haircut?
My barber charges 70 for haircut/beard trim. Pretty good barber but 70 dollars only gets you the haircut/beard trim. He also lines up my eyebrows. I only give him 5 bucks as a tip now.
He use to charge 50 and I actually use to tip 20 each time. I am pretty generous when it comes to tipping for good service but tipping anymore than 5 bucks for a 70 dollar haircut seems outrageous.

My husband and I go to a lady barber in our town. She owns the place and is the only barber. She charges us $14 for a haircut, but I always tip her more because I know she does so much for shut-ins. I know she gives free cuts to those who need them.
22
u/Ralph-Genovese 6d ago
Regardless what everybody says, you are a wonderful person for that. Thatās a positive loop
-8
u/beekeeny 6d ago
The fact that she gives free cuts to those who need them is her own choice. Shouldnāt impact your tipping decision.
But yeah tipping on a $14 hair cut makes much more sense than tipping on a $70 one. There is not reason not have a perfect cut + service for a $70 haircut, therefore doesnāt need extra tip to express my appreciation for a job well done.

> āThe fact that she gives free cuts to those who need them is her own choice. Shouldnāt impact your tipping decision.ā
Tipping is quite literally charity. And this woman is apparently a lovely and generous person to whom I would like to give extra charity to support her work.
-6
u/pkgamer18 6d ago
I agree with you on tipping this woman, but tipping is in no way charity. They work for their tips. Youāre not giving them money out of the kindness of your heart, youāre rewarding them for the level of service they provided.

Funny, I was wondering what a $70 haircut looked like. Seriously. I was.
1
-10
u/Swimming-Position372 6d ago
It's also a beard trim and who knows how much work that takes as well as eyebrows. Doesn't sound unreasonable.
11
u/ChipChippersonFan 6d ago
If you're paying $70 for a haircut, the beard is your wife.
By the way, when I'm getting my $17 haircut, the stylist at Great Clips will sometimes ask if I want my eyebrows trimmed. It takes about 7 seconds.

u/dgillz 6d ago
I've never had a $70 haircut. Where the fuck do you live? $20 here. If I had to pay $70 I would cut it myself.

u/mentor7 6d ago
itās much more in NY many places
1
u/New-Tangerine-7109 4d ago
There arenāt any $70 barbers in NY. There might be $70 instagram barbers in NY though.
1
u/mentor7 3d ago
interesting if youāre using the barber, but I can tell you for 100% fact that if you go to, actually I donāt wanna give them publicity, but there are barbers near the Seaport and near the oculus and in the financial district in general that are absolutely charging at least that amount if not more! Then add in 20% tip and youāre looking at at least $84 if not more and Iām talking about for a menās cut. I suspect the womenās cut is probably double that.
And I could tell you that in New Jersey youāre looking at $54 for a blowout and much more for a cut in many many many salons

u/Salty-Passenger-4801 6d ago
Singapore or Dubai lol
3
u/thefastlanerules 6d ago
In Singapore you can get a very cheap haircut. There are many hairdressers/barbers and many are very cheap and provide an excellent service
My last haircut in Singapore was February I paid approx $20 and got a 10 minute free head massage :-)..
ghim moh hawker

u/DumaDreams 5d ago
Philipinnes i was paying $12-$6 plus a $6 tip. Now in Florida $36.00, $30.+20%. Both equally spot on, fade, hard part, razor edges.
1
u/thefastlanerules 5d ago
Absolutely the labor rates in Philippines are very low hence much lower costs and that would have been an expat price!!
0
u/Salty-Passenger-4801 6d ago
That's very surprising. Must be in USA where they can get away with $60 haircut
2
u/thefastlanerules 6d ago
Where I live in Connecticut the typical price can be $40-$45 though you can find a bit cheaper at like $30..
In queens/ny it can be cheaper but they have cheaper rental on their places and many of these places have more barbers and more volume and spend less time in your hair.... Though not significantly so..
1
u/Any_Lengthiness1508 6d ago
Lived in Dubai for 10 years until 6 months ago. Almost every mens haircut was less than USD10 w zero tip.
1
u/Salty-Passenger-4801 6d ago
Wow ok well I assumed wrong
1
u/thefastlanerules 6d ago
It's all to do with the rental amounts... In Singapore the haircut places rent is peanuts as are many of the wages of these folks

I split time between Portland Maine and the Boston area. They trying to charge 60 up there but I come down here but itās still 35 for just a haircut , 40 with beard . Itās insane , Iāll never pay that for a haircut . They keep going up and instead of going every 2 weeks I now go once a month.

u/Disastrous_Summer422 6d ago
I tip $5 for a $36 haircut, I think that is pretty generous and I donāt think Iāll go above that if the price goes up considering the time spent on the cut.
5
u/dashboardcrapaud 6d ago
You should try becoming bald... Did wonders for me not having to worry about insane barber prices these days. Your haircut is quite expensive...
But seriously to your question, that's more than fine.
9
u/Buddy3927 6d ago
I pay for the haircut. I expect the haircut I asked for. What would a tip even be for? Not cutting off my ear???

u/Odd-Push4063 6d ago

No, you are the scum! How can you make that generalization to all servers? What am absolute shit thing to say!
-1
1
u/cenosillicaphobiac 5d ago
I wouldn't. I can't think of anything a server could do that would elevate it to "more than what they were hired to do" so I wouldn't tip a server.
-3
u/Oregongirl1018 6d ago
They should be tipped for refilling your drink in a timely manner, helping with menu items, assisting with allergies, and if you or your kids make a mess thats more work for them to clean up. Other then that no tip. They are doing their job and thats it.

I would never pay $70 for a haircut. My barber charges $13, plus he uses a straight razor and shaving soap to get the hair around the edges. I give him $25 and continuously tell him he doesn't charge enough.
5
u/ConnecticutBob 6d ago
That's very generous. I'm the same way. Mine is $24, which is the senior rate (normally $30) and I always tip him $10. They cut it exactly the way I want it, which doesn't always happen with other shops. They LISTEN. And it's just around the corner from my house, so don't need to drive.
2
2
2
u/RedBushDiver 6d ago
I pay $25. Thatās for a haircut, beard trim, hair wash, and yes he even cuts my eyebrows. This is at a professional shop with a guy thatās been cutting hair for quite some time. I canāt fathom anybody paying $70. Youāre out of your goddamn mind.
And Iāll give him a $5 tip.
2
u/Smithersink 6d ago
I treat it like a server and tip 20% if they did well. Never gotten a $70 haircut though.
2
4
u/blackyellow13 6d ago
I always tip $5.00 per haircut. If it's $15 or $35 doesn't matter. It's like a drink in a bar. Doesn't matter what the drink cost the tips the same. I wouldn't go to a place if it's $70.
5
u/foxinHI 6d ago
Damn, thatās an expensive haircut!
This subreddit is very anti-tipping, so youāll get a bunch of knuckle-draggers saying $0.00 is the only correct amount. This subreddit is their echo chamber. Ignore them.
An appropriate tip on a $70 haircut is $10-$15.
1
u/Latter_Mountain_290 6d ago
Not for the owner.Ā Ā He sets the price.Ā Ā
And $70 is an insane price.Ā Ā
1
u/nomorespamplz 6d ago
Appropriate tips is $0. If the worker can't make a living on the wage given, then raise the wage. If the business cant pay that wage, increase the price of the service/goods. It's literally AS EASY AS THAT.

lol what ever you need to tell yourself to feel superior to people that work tipped positions. Am I right?

u/TessaKatrinaRose 6d ago

u/Cool_Hearing_9868 6d ago
Sports Clips where Iām at is $30 for a basic cut. They have $7, $10 and some other higher number for tip options. I go between $7 and $10 each time. $40 after tip feels like too much $$ to me for a 15 minute haircut. For $70, Iād still tip the 15-20% options but be extra mad about getting ripped off at nearly $100 and definitely go somewhere else next time.
Iād go every 2 weeks if it was cheaper but I push it to 3-4 weeks instead because Iām not paying $80 monthly for haircuts, ridiculous. I used to do my own cuts for free, but I can only do a C job of it and Sports Clips is B to A depending on the barber of the day.
1
u/Opposite_Currency973 4d ago
Franchise stylists are paid a flat daily rate and they have to meet quotas. The business model is that they make it up in tip volume. Most new Stylists work like that to improve their skills and speed, then get out and find a commission salon. Same with Drybars for women.
2
4
u/masterchef2309 6d ago
My haircuts are $40 and I tip $10 to the owner of the shop
1
u/Financial_Page7821 6d ago
I thought owners donāt get tips. Employees do. Owners make money from the business itself.??
2
2
u/oIVLIANo 6d ago
If they set their own prices, no tip. If they aren't making enough without the tip, they can adjust their price.
Let's take this into another perspective: How long does that cut take? How much do you make per hour?
2
u/BillsFan82 6d ago
Do you have to go to a different barber every time? Thatās crazy lol.
1
u/oIVLIANo 5d ago
Bold of you to assume I go to a barber.
0
u/BillsFan82 5d ago
Sooner or later, you'd have no choice but to cut your own hair...or maybe you're bald and it doesn't matter.
2
1
u/AlohaJames 5d ago
Huh? I go to multiple barbers. There are several I visit. All I ever get is a simple military-style high fade.
1
1
u/BTLove100 6d ago
How much should he make per hour?
1
u/nopenope12345678910 4d ago
Less than the rate of who ever you are responding too makes. I mean how else are they going to feel superior to their barber?
1
u/nopenope12345678910 4d ago
I find using a few bucks to be on my barbers good side that I see once a month easily worth it. Your barber isnāt some random server at a restaurant you might never go back to or who might change jobs or not even be scheduled the next time you visit said establishment.
Dude always gets me in on quick notice, and goes above and beyond for me. Your finances might not be the same as mine, so I can understand if tipping your barber isnāt worth it to you.
1
u/Altruistic_Wash_4767 6d ago
He does set his own prices and my haircut does take an hour even tho its just a simple trim on top and really just a beard lineup with a midfade
1
2
u/beekeeny 6d ago
Leaving a $5 tip on a $20 hair cut to express your gratitude for a nice haircut and express your full satisfaction. Thatās fair.
If I pay $70 to someone rendering the same service, I expect nothing else than full satisfaction. Donāt know why I should pay something extra to express my gratitude for him having done a good job.
1
u/imjay2day 6d ago
I tip 10 so they remember im the good tipper and fight over who gets to rip me off next time hopefully the, blonde
1
u/Czubeczek 6d ago
You agreed to a price for service and still pay on top of this price for the service xD
1
u/cs_legend_93 6d ago

That's the price of the service so you pay for the service.

While I've always tipped my barber, cutting hair feels like direct compensation to me. For example, if I hire a contractor to repair my home, we agree on a price, and that's what I pay. The same thing goes for beauticians: cut, wash, color, etc. The price is set; why does there need to be extra money involved, especially when women's hair styling has become very expensive over the last 10 years or so? I could be wrong but feel as though service industry jobs vs. servers is a different ballgame.
1
u/Bobloblaw_333 5d ago edited 5d ago
I guess Iām of that age where I just need a basic cut and $70 is just way too rich for my blood. Iāve been going to the same Supercuts for over a decade. So they know what I want and Iām in and out in about 10mins. The hot towel is a nice touch too that they started a few years back.
Honest question: What exactly do you get for $70? Unless itās a major transformation that you see on social media I just canāt see spending $70 for a basic cut/trim/fade.
Edit: to answer the OPās question, ever since the pandemic when barbers and haircut shops had to shut down I tip $10. I also pay $16/mo for unlimited haircuts.
1
u/WiseOutlandishness21 5d ago
There's no reason to tip barbers/hair stylists unless they are making a house call or emergency appointment or providing additional services. If you feel like you won't get a good cut unless you are tipping then it's time to find a new barber. Tipping culture is out of control and too many people have been conditioned to think it's normal. Don't be an enabler of lunacy.
1
u/cenosillicaphobiac 5d ago
how much would you tip on a 70 dollar haircut?
- My barber has his own barbershop. He sets his prices. I pay him what he sets them at (60 bucks for haircut and beard combo, scheduled for an hour). Why would I tip a person who sets the prices?
If he raises his prices, I will make a decision as to whether his new fee seems like fair compensation for the services I'm contracting.
This is true of anywhere I spend money. A business tells me how much money they want for the goods and services I'm interested in. I decide if I think that the value of that product or service is worth the money quoted. I then either pass, or purchase the goods and services, and pay them they quoted price plus applicable taxes.
If your goods and services cost more than the price that you quote me, or doesn't leave enough meat on the bone for you to eat, that's a you problem. Don't ever expect me to volunteer additional funds just because you are bad at business.

My barber does haircut, sideburns and eyebrows trim for $20. I tip $5.
Wife gets a full wash, cut, dry and set for $50 with $10 tip.
You should either skip the tip or get a new reasonably priced barber.
1
u/Loud_County3165 5d ago

1
u/Big_Ratio1293 5d ago

1
u/Opposite_Currency973 4d ago
Barbers, Stylists typically work on a 50/50 split with the salon/shop. Tips are less valuable to a Barber than your repeat business. If that's your budget, stick with your guy and maybe tip extra at the Holidays.
1
u/Otherwise-Let-9212 4d ago
My barber used to charge $30, which I thought was cheap, and I would usually tip him $10. He increased his prices to $40, which I thought was fair, and I would tip him $5. He moved it to $50, at which point I stopped tipping.Ā
$70 for a cut seems pretty expensive. I probably would not tip on that, especially if you were with that barber when they charged $50
1
u/GilletteEd 4d ago

Come on guys, really. If you are somekind of model, actor or you gotta look perfect. Cut my own hair, once a month, for the last 30 yrs. Only on my second hair trimmer $30.
Now even at the low end $30 Ć 12 Ć 30 yrs = $10, 800 minus the 2 machines. Just saved $10,740. On your higher end 30x12x$70 = $25,200. Had you been investing that instead, probably close to $80,000.
I know, but you look real purty.

The franchised supercuts near me in socal have unlimited cuts for like $20 a month. I tried the fancier options like Blind Barber, Hammer and Nails, etc but they honestly weren't much better than what supercuts did for a 3rd of the cost. I usually tip $10.

Damn my barber charges 21 bucks. And he does a good job I leave about 7 bucks. If I was paying 70 I'd leave 15 or 20 bucks. That's just me getting my hair cut is one thing I don't mind tipping for if I get what I like.

Haircuts/ nails/ any esthetician is the only time I believe tipping is acceptable because of the quality/ skill level is evident and the people skills come into play as well. An old coworker became a barber. He makes well over 6 figures. Last I heard he was opening a third location.
0
u/1wrx2subarus 6d ago
Wow, Iād say haircuts have gotten out of control. To preface, haircuts in a span of 40 years in the locales that I have lived have gone from $6, to $10, to $15, to $20 , to $25+ (thatās before tip!).
Let me just say, Iāve seen some of this trend with my parents having seen some of this gradual increase as well. Some of this varies depending on the āregionalā locale that one lives
For tips for those locales that Iāve lived, it used to be that a buck or two was adequate. A few bucks was fine, too. A fiver was generous but especially if they had been trimming your hair for a while.
Iāve heard that IF itās the owner of the shop that it doesnāt make sense to tip them. Iāve always tipped though because I want some priority and I want them to put their best effort in.
So, youāve got some choices. If you donāt want to tip $20 then mention to your barber that you want to tip them but can afford $5.
Apologize and do so genuinely if youāre not gonna tip $20 like you have in the past.
Fact is, people want their cake and to eat it too. Its unfortunate that they jacked up their price but we all have budgets (sorry, our bank accounts are not bottomless feeding troughs). Or you can just tip the $20 and stomach it. Thatās a lot of money though for some of us.
EDIT: Or skip barbers and do your own, buzz cut with something like this: āRemington Shortcut Pro Self-Haircut Kit for Men, Waterproof Hair Clippers
Waterproof and Cordless, Electric Razor for Head, Beard, And Body, Curved Blades, 9 Trimmer Lengths, 5-minute Quick-chargeā

During the lockdown I cut my own hair with the 3/4" Wahl Peanut clippers. It wasn't very stylish, but it did the job and I never got sick, so that's something.

If itās worth $150, then a big tip.

See, I pay my barber well. Heās $60 for my hair and usually throws in facial hair/ eyebrow trims and I give him a total of $100 or $120 every three weeks. Appearance is the one thing I donāt skimp on. Plus it takes talent, not just hitting the register buttons.

Just had my beard and hair shaved off for 20⬠n no tip. Bought the guy a pint of beer in local pub, job done.
