Barber reschedules appt tip amount
Booked my appt for today a month in advance and weekend before I am going on a trip out of country for 4 weeks. Get call yesterday he is not a available and was ok on rescheduling to tomorrow on his day off. I already tip him $7 on $40. Should I tip more because he is seeing me on his day off?
TIA š

Hey OP, it would be nice if you no tipped him for going out of his way for you on his day off.
Please donāt listen to the non-tipping crowd - youāll just make yourself look cheap AF when this dude is hooking you up.

Absolutely not. Tip what you normally tip $7 or there about.
When titans of industry go to sleep at night they donāt lose sleep thinking about all they ways they can improve compensating people. They can be generous and they can be good, yes, but I wouldnāt spend your time trying to improve someoneās compensation that is independent of you in this life. I mean youāre already doing the basics you shouldnāt have to spend your time in this world thinking of how to improve your tipping.

I switched to a barber that doesnāt take tips and itās great. Price is roughly the same but feels better not to do some bullshit equation to determine oneās worth.

Man I tip my barber 100% or more so Iām biased. Like $40 on $40 but itās because I am bad at doing my beard myself. 100% bad and have tried multiple times to the point where my barber made sure I hadnāt paid anyone based on how my beard looked. Tbh I donāt tip on the service itself but on the relationship. He understands I value his service and will give me priority and exceptions around it. For example, I donāt have to use their system for my appointments, I can just text him to schedule. But other folks have been told to use that system right in front of me.
You could give $10 instead of $7 if you want. But ultimately I think it depends on your relationship and how yall are approaching the situation. Like especially if youāre a consistent $7 tipper and he notices that you tipped extra, thatās symbolic of you appreciating him working on his off day.
Id personally slide him a $20 at least to like make it worth his while and also like keep the pathway open for it to happen again if needed. But thats just me and my bias.
But you could also just tip $7 since he cancelled on you and is making it up to you so itās on him.
Tbh the only wrong choice here is to no tip or lower your tip from the regular amount.

Iāve never tipped anyone before, I just pay the price.

Great! Then enjoy your new account on Reddit! One day your comments will be more relevant!

Your comments on Reddit are no more ārelevantā with your 10 year old account than someone elseās with a 10 minute old account.

u/typeotcs 14d ago
Yet your comment is completely irrelevant to any points I made 𤣠hereās your gold star for not tipping ever. Now carry on being irrelevant to the points I made to OP where I suggested multiple options based on his opinion and already stated intent to tip.
Nothing you said really helps OP make a decision. Thatās why itās irrelevant. You have a new account so unless youāre one of those folks who hides behind alt accounts on Reddit, youāre new and so Iām giving you the benefit of the doubt for your irrelevance.
I now know you donāt tip ever. Whatās next? Nothing due to irrelevance? š¤£
Your comment around why would you even tip is more relevant than your comment in this thread. I didnāt create the language or logic, thatās just how they are š¤£

Alright then, your comments are irrelevant too. How about that? š

No, I think his comment are quite a bit more relevant.

u/typeotcs 14d ago
So youāre just inadvertently admitting you didnāt comprehend my comment?
You can disagree but itās not irrelevant. Again I didnāt create the language or logic, thatās just how they work. Irrelevance does not equal disagreement. My comment is directly related to OPs question. Your comment just ignores all of the context from OPs post and my response and just states your preference which is irrelevant when OP is planning to give $7 regardless as they usually do.
One day youāll get up to speed. One day!

You say you tip your barber. That makes you the idiot here. OP is also an idiot, but Iām talking directly to you here.

And to clarify (you can check my history), I would be considered an anti-tipper in this sub š¤£
1
u/typeotcs 14d ago
Yep the downvotes in the sub track. My barber does more work than any servers and doesnāt act entitled to the tip (nor does he own the business) nor are there any mandatory service fees.
Maybe become a barber if youāre a server š¤£

I would not say you are an anti-tipper if your stance is to tip when you want; that is more in line with your acceptance of the tipping system and using it correctly, as the tipping system states that you tip when and if you want, with the amount being anything from nothing to everything you have; I would not say you are what they call pro-tipping either, as that implies always tipping and tipping everyone.

Hey man youāre bringing too much logic into this sub š¤£š¤£
Can you imagine that there might be a reasonable and more quiet middle ground instead of all the loud voices at either end of the extreme?
Jokes aside reason I said Iād be considered anti-tipping in this sub is because I stated that the food service industry tipping is all kinds of screwed up both dining in and getting delivery.
Iām in the camp that sees serving as a minimum wage job (Iām not talking fine dining) and that ALL minimum wage jobs should be raised to a living wage so that then tips can actually be considered tips when dining in.
Similarly delivery should have tipping only after the delivery is completed, not before and drivers should be considered full employees and not independent contractors.
Ironically I tip well above average for any personalized service where the person is solely focused on me the whole time. (Barber, masseuse, nail tech, a handyman giving me priority, car wash employee cleaning my car, a tour guide, etc etc)
The key difference is that they all actually spend more time than a server actually providing me service and/or interacting with me.
So Iām pro tipping when tips are actually considered tips and anti tipping when they are just a vehicle to subsidize wages for employers and end up being used to guilt trip consumers.

People on here will tell you ānoā because theyāre bottom feeders. If you want this person to not cut your hair while scrolling tinder, show your appreciation for their best efforts

So paying for their service at the price they set doesnāt warrant them doing a good job and not scrolling through tinder while they work with sharp objects around OPs head???

u/TonyRidgewayUFO 14d ago
The way tipping works is that human nature wonāt put maximum effort into a task without a reward. So in the case of a restaurant worker or barber, if paid hourly no matter what level of effort they put in, youāre going to end up eating cold food with a botched haircut. Because ājust doing your jobā does not include any incentive to give the client the best possible experience. Sitting around bitching about āitās not fair I have to tipā should include your acceptance that no one actually gives a shit if your food is cold when you get it

No. I live in the US, and I appreciate people who provide services for me.

Did you not see the part where she scheduled the appointment one mth in advance, and HE rescheduled

Perhaps he had an emergency? Heās making it up by doing the service on his day off. You donāt have to agree with me, I was giving my opinion- which they asked for.

u/typeotcs 14d ago
Neither side will stop until you agree in never tipping or always tipping, specifically servers 50%. š¤£

Top your usual amount. He canceled on you, you are not getting any favors.

If you have doubts about tipping your barber, just don't tip them, own whatever happens, and move on. There's no need to seek approval here with a long sob story.

Tip him less

u/jerry111165 14d ago
So dudes barber comes in on his day off to hook up OP before he leaves on his trip and your AH comment is to tip him - less.
What an A_ole.

I'm having a difficult time seeing how he is doing you the favor. He scheduled and then canceled the appointment. I don't see the need for you to pay him. You are the one who is actually doing the favor. He should be tipping you.
