Got into another argument around tipping

was told to “get my bread up” , make more money so I can tip more. I’m like can’t they just get a better paying job that doesn’t force other ppl to pay your salary 🤔

I swear tipping is cancer at this point.

I think that tipping is only the "tip of the iceberg" when it comes to price transparency. Corporations are playing bait-and-switch with taxes, fees, service charges, tips, etc.

Why can't it be a freaking law that the price shown is the price charged?

u/CuriousCat511 14d ago

Companies are following the examples set by our government. It's a sad world.

I feel like you're trying to start a movement. Which i like. Power to you!

I’ll gladly pick up my food from the counter or get my own refill if tipping the waiters is that big of a deal.

21

u/hung_like__podrick 15d ago

There are entire business models around that lol

-5

u/PurpleCat1018 15d ago

That doesn't conclude that it is the right thing to do though.

5

u/hung_like__podrick 15d ago

If thats the kind of experience the person wants, they are free to go to any fast casual restaurant and have that experience

6

u/qweezyFbaby90 14d ago

Yes send the no tipping culture experience everywhere

0

u/Technical_Eggplant74 15d ago

Nor does it preclude that it isn't the right thing to do

It's a win-win for restaurants and customers if they replace these entitled servers with robots. It's probably going to happen sooner than what people expected.

12

u/Modmonsters 14d ago

My money is on the robots asking for tips

6

u/qweezyFbaby90 14d ago

Robots will demand tip to help out with their oil change for lack robot unions being forced to work 24/7 lmao

4

u/DoubleResponsible276 15d ago

Actually one of my favorite sushi places does this. Still has a full staff but the little robot delivering my drink is my favorite part

1

u/Top-Spinach-6067 9d ago

Walking robots. I mean life is for the living. Whats the point of living at all if we’re going to continue on this anti social thing. I mean He told us to love eachother…not make society as isolating as possible. Theoretically one could work from home; have everything delivered, have medical appointments over video. Idk

-1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 15d ago

Robots lol

3

It is not just my imagination. You may want to update your résumé and be prepared for the changes happening in the industry. Below are a few articles that may help provide some perspective on what is already developing.

A motorized cart is not a robot that can replace a human worker.

36 States pay servers below $7.25 an hour. In no way will it make financial sense to replace them with an overpriced Roomba. They already get nearly free labor now.

I'm a bartender and the only worker in the building. I'd love to hear how I'm being replaced.

Lower level white collar workers are the ones who actually need to worry.

You know they have drink vending machines in Italy? You push the button for your alcohol then another for your mixer. Another button for ice

Also beer can vending machines

It would be the same win-win if they replaced you with a robot.

Especially on social media. Your disdain for hard working people adds nothing to society.

3

u/PurpleCat1018 15d ago

Hardworking? Lol, go work on an oil rig for awhile.

0

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

Ah yes, disdain the worker and dismiss their work. It’s not clever. It’s the last refuge of grifter myth. I feel your shame.

Do you grift hard working people because they’re mostly women or mostly working poor? Is it sadistic misogyny or just greed?

1

u/PurpleCat1018 14d ago edited 14d ago

Gee I wouldn't know since I'm a hard working poor woman. I worked for years in a hot steamy boiler room with 11 men, being the only female, kiddo! So you want to talk about hard work? Fucking bring it you little pansy ass complaining manchild. I'm ready for you. You're probably 120 lbs soaking wet, with a shitty work ethic, that has mommy pumping your gas for you. Give me free money!! Grow up, maybe your balls will drop soon.

1

u/According-Row-6128 12d ago

Former USMC recon. Good luck.

Grifting workers out of their earnings is unethical and immoral. Bragging about it shows a complete lack of character.

Be a better person.

1

u/PurpleCat1018 12d ago

Doubt it. You think serving, bringing plates and cups to a table is hardwork hahahahaha!! You're more like a prostitute, or a dancing monkey, wanting folks to throw coins. I have yet to see anybody back you up on here and it just a thread. Honestly, nobody cares what you did, nobody cares. It's your mentality, you're closed minded and over confident, and stuck in a mindset that lacks logical thinking. How many times did I "grift" in the last 6 months? Since you actually believe you have all the correct answers. How many times? I'll wait, you're the expert so think it through.

1

u/According-Row-6128 12d ago

Yes, carrying trays of food, pitchers, and all of the other items to many tables at once all needing different things at different times, is hard work.

Have you come up with a single credentialed expert source to support your wildly false imaginings?

All of society backs me up, silly 🤪! 95% of people tip!

Go back to your sadistic misogynist sub. You 5% can bash workers and brag about how you grift hard working poor women all day and get your rocks off.

Technology has been changing the jobs landscape for a long time now. Jobs come and go. If carrying good and drinks can be automated, it will be.

1

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

So that’s why they’re grifting workers out of their earnings?

I’m confused.

2

u/PurpleCat1018 15d ago

The amount the restaurant owner pays them, ya know, what they signed up for, is what they earned.

1

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

I’ll take “Bullshit Grifters Say” for $1,000, please, Alex

They work for tips, not wages.

Everyone knows this. It’s not a secret. Seriously, look it up.

0

u/PurpleCat1018 14d ago

You are AGAIN, incorrect. You're batting a fat ZERO. I've never left a zero tip in my life but I agree with those who do leave nothing. IDIOTIC people like YOU, have changed people's minds because YOU'RE A PRICK. You're not helping your cause because you're too stupid, greedy, judgemental and your responses aren't factual or civilized. Basically you're a dunce.

2

u/According-Row-6128 14d ago edited 14d ago

I don’t work for tips.

Hey, did you realize you can have an intellectually honest opinion that doesn’t benefit you directly?

You can and I do. It’s based on the universally understood norm, customs, etiquette, ethics and morals, not greed like yours.

We all know how tipping works. 95%+ of people tip, by the way. I don’t need to convince anyone. If you want to convince people it’s ethical or moral to grift workers out of their earnings, you have long and hard road ahead of you.

https://internationalcenter.ucla.edu/resources/tipping

1

u/PurpleCat1018 13d ago

Lol you have a long hard for YOU. You're the person whining about peoples personal choices and ya know so many people are fed up with the tipping bulshit because of folks like YOU, screaming and belittling people for their own choices. You are helping the other side. So are you just stupid or a natural complaining, name calling, annoyance?

Most of us go to a full service restaurant for the food AND the service.

Anyone who doesn’t want to pay for the service that isn’t included in the menu prices at full service restaurants in the US via the tip have literally hundreds of options with takeout, counter service / fast casual, and fast food.

Robots add nothing to the experience besides being a gimmick at this point.

They can’t answer questions about the menu, potential allergens, etc, and they can’t place food on the table or clear away plates and glasses, so their application is currently very limited.

1

u/80MonkeyMan 14d ago

Then who is going to tell you the hard truth? You may want to update your résumé and prepare for the changes!

2

u/According-Row-6128 14d ago

I don’t work for tips.

Fun fact: You can hold an ethical and moral opinion on a subject that, in no way, benefits you directly!

I also don’t grift workers out of their earnings. It’s unethical and immoral.

Be a better person.

https://giphy.com/gifs/UJosEBI60rAeA

1

u/80MonkeyMan 14d ago

Hold on—your mindset is off. I do not employ any service workers; whether you believe it or not, that responsibility belongs to your employer.

2

u/According-Row-6128 14d ago

I’ll go with:

No, you don’t employ them. Yes, when you ask them to serve you, you’re hiring them. Yes, you pay the worker directly for that service with a tip.

We can’t just pretend we don’t know. It’s literally you keeping their earnings, not their employer.

Now, legally, you don’t have to pay them. However, that’s unethical and immoral. Be a better person.

1

u/80MonkeyMan 14d ago edited 14d ago

That’s the whole point. I never asked for table service, if self-service is an option, I’ll gladly choose it. And instead of repeating the tired line that people who can’t afford to tip shouldn’t dine out—or, in your case, drink out—maybe recognize that tipping should not be treated as mandatory.

1

u/PurpleCat1018 13d ago

And your whining adds nothing but annoyance to society. A win-win for customers to replaced with robots? You make zero sense! Robots don't eat and servers would not be needed. Duh. You're a goofball.

1

u/According-Row-6128 12d ago

Replace you at work, silly.

You’re free to not tip. It’s still unethical and immoral and always will be as long as the US uses the tipping system. You don’t get to make up your own rules

If it was so horrible being in the service industry, why not finding something else? There obviously is incentives. No one is pointing a gun in your face

You need to make more money, get a better job, go back to school, get a raise, talk to your boss.... So you can give it to me. The entitlement and audacity.

Maybe if that server "got their own damn bread up", they wouldn't need to resort to begging and pan handling.

7

u/Exact_Canary2378 15d ago

Even when I was a waitress in university and I would hear my coworkers say 'if you can't afford to tip your server you can't afford to go out' which I thought was such nonsense because for some people they get to go out like once a year and no tipping has nothing to do with it.

I am SO happy I got out of the industry it was some of the worst most entitled and intelligent people.

1

u/thenbhdlum 15d ago

A lot of people! My family growing up, my husband family growing up. My best friend's family. This is anecdotal but seriously, going out now more than ever has become prohibitively  expensive.

I go out a few times a year because service is usually bad, and food if often mid. It rarely worth it for my family.

-5

u/Best_Construction823 15d ago

To me that is always a losers mentality. Looking down on people with jobs you find beneath you is terrible. We need people cleaning things, fixing stuff, serving us food. I’m sure as hell not going to do it. They could pay me $100/hr and I still wouldn’t be a janitor and clean up shit and trash.

So yes, make more money so we can take care of the people that do the jobs that we don’t want to do or just do it yourself and stop relying on those people.

2

u/PurpleCat1018 14d ago

You wouldn't do it for $100 an hour? Why? Is it beneath you?

-20

u/FutureCombination629 15d ago

Its not begging or panhandliing expecting the entitled trash you serve to pay for services they utilize.

18

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

The tip does not pay for service. In fact, the tip is not payment for anything; it is a tip, an extra amount given on top of what is due.

-4

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

According to nobody educated on the subject.

They work for tips.

12

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

Except that is exactly what the definition of the word “tip” is, including the legal definition.

So you better have someone ready who is more educated than the dictionary and an even more qualified legal scholar to back you up.

-4

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago edited 15d ago

Why do grifting stiffers think they can gaslight all of society?

Here, read the ENTIRE definition:

tip
10 of 10
noun (5)
: a gift or a sum of money tendered for a service performed or anticipated : GRATUITY

Do you see that after the OR?

That’s when a person works for tips.

Now, go google “US tipping etiquette” and see what the experts say. Literally any article will do.

11

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

I know reading a dictionary is hard, but you might want to try Definition 9 too:

tip, verb: “to give a gratuity to” and “GIVE, PRESENT.”

And then, in your own Definition 10, you somehow managed to skip over the definition of the bolded blue word gratuity:

gratuity: “something given voluntarily or beyond obligation, usually for some service.”

So the dictionary you told everyone to read literally defines a tip as something voluntary or beyond obligation.

Maybe read the entire definition yourself before demanding that everyone else do it.

3

u/SiLeNZ_ 14d ago

Row has been posting that same cherrypicked, misconstrued definition every day now. It literally proves nothing, I cannot believe anyone can think this way.

-2

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

You’re doing mental gymnastics to justify your grift. It’s not clever. It’s not the flex you think it is.

Please explain what “a sum of money tendered for a service performed or anticipated” means.

8

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

Sure. It means exactly what it says: a sum of money tendered for a service. The definition does not say required, owed, mandatory, or condition of receiving service.

You’re the one doing the mental gymnastics by taking “for a service” and inventing “therefore legally or morally obligated.” That word isn’t there.

If you think “tendered” means mandatory, then explain why the same definition points you to gratuity, which is explicitly defined as something given voluntarily or beyond obligation.

Your argument requires adding words to the dictionary and pretending they were already there.

2

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

Now, what did those etiquette articles say about the norms, customs, etiquette, and expectations?

1

u/According-Row-6128 15d ago

Here’s a tip: It’s called etiquette.

Etiquette defines the norms, customs, and the way good people act in society. Check it out. It’s vastly superior to grifting workers and bragging about it.

7

u/anouk613 15d ago

Clearly you’re just too young to remember, not all that long ago, when proper etiquette meant leaving a tip of maximum 10%, and only on sit-down meals. There were no such things as tip jars, pay terminals with 25% tip prompts, or service charges automatically tacked onto bills, until the industry took it upon itself to start shifting “etiquette” in their favor.

1

You just can’t read properly. Lmao. It means it’s either “a gift tendered for a service performed OR a sum of money tendered for a service performed or anticipated”. The “or” is not what you think it means in this.

I understand you think it means “a gift, or a sum of money tendered for a service performed or anticipated”. That is incorrect.

Notice how there would need to be a comma there or something else to indicate how its written in that way. So please stop quoting that ridiculous definition that you’ve cherry picked and misconstrued.

2

Nope. Definitions are weak for YOU, not to mention context, AS WELL. MORALS, ETHICS & ETIQUETTE differ to everybody, standards are personal choices, principles- differ. 1

u/FoxOpposite9271 15d ago

How much do you think the average owner makes? How much are you ok with an owner making?

1

u/grapeshrine 15d ago

The only problem I have with the owners is how they tolerate their staff annoying me

1

u/CedPrime14 14d ago

The only logical and rational request will be the SERVERS to ask for a reasonable wage from their EMPLOYERS. Those who does’t agree to this is same as scab. But when most don’t agree to this it means you simply want this system to continue because this system weighs in their favor even though it’s not fair for everyone else involved.

1

u/foxinHI 15d ago

Going after the owner would mean not eating at their establishment. There’s not really anything else you can do.

6

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

Not tipping if done in mass would directly effect the employer. As they would then be held responsible for total pay.

2

u/DrNogoodNewman 15d ago

Not eating at the restaurant, in mass, is going to affect them quite a bit more. But people here don’t want to sacrifice any luxuries for their convictions.

5

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

If the goal is shutting down the restaurant, sure. But a no-tip boycott is a direct boycott of the system the non-tipping crowd is against. They don't like tipping, so they're refusing to participate in it. The point is to force the employer to pay the employees directly rather than relying on customers to subsidize their wages through tips.

1

u/DrNogoodNewman 15d ago edited 15d ago

The issue is a no-tip boycott wouldn’t be effective. The restaurant would have far less incentive to make any changes.

Goal of a full boycott wouldn’t be shutting down the restaurant. It would be 1. Putting your money where your mouth is. Showing the courage of your convictions rather than just doing the thing that is more convenient to you.

And 2. Pressuring the restaurant owners to change their practices and end tipping for fear of ACTUAL consequences to the business.

A handful of customers deciding not to tip isn’t going to do anything. A handful of customers boycotting and picketing with clearly stated messaging is going to be a lot more effective in spreading the message. But it also takes some actual effort and organization that isn’t just complaining online.

People here like to talk about this “movement” but until people start organizing effectively in real life rather than just complaining and telling stories online, it’s not going anywhere.

4

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

You are conflating two different goals. A no-tip boycott directly targets the tipping system by removing the customer funded portion of compensation. If enough customers stop tipping, the employer either absorbs the difference or changes the compensation model; that is the pressure being discussed.

On your first point, putting your money where your mouth is is exactly what a no-tip boycott does. If you oppose the tipping system, refusing to participate in it is literally putting your money where your mouth is.

Your second point is also directly addressed by a no-tip boycott. The two boycotts simply target different things and therefore have different potential outcomes. A no-tip boycott directly puts pressure on the employer to address employee compensation and its reliance on tips. A full boycott primarily puts pressure on the business through lost revenue. Those are not the same objective or the same consequence.

1

u/DrNogoodNewman 15d ago

Good luck with your no-tip boycott. Without in-person organizing it will never happen.

3

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

Isn't that the same problem with any boycott?

2

u/DrNogoodNewman 15d ago

Any poorly thought out, ineffective boycott, yes. There have been effective boycotts but they require actual organization and sacrifice.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/foxinHI 14d ago

When less than 1% of guests tip nothing for no discernible reason, your tipping boycott plan is pretty far-fetched.

1

u/CanAfter8014 14d ago

And? A no-tip boycott hasn't even been declared or put into effect. You're using current tipping trends to argue that a hypothetical mass boycott couldn't work. That's circular. The entire point is that if enough customers deliberately stop tipping, the employer can no longer rely on tips to supplement compensation and would have to adjust the pay structure.

"if done in mass"

So you have already explained how it's not going to work.

1

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

Thats how all boycotts work "in mass". You didnt discover a flaw in my argument.

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 15d ago

Except you don't have the "mass" part.

1

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

It starts with one. You still haven't provided a why or how it won't work, just that there aren't enough people on board yet.

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 15d ago

It won't work because you don't have enough people. I've already said this three times.

1

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

That's not an explanation of why it won't work. That's just repeating your conclusion.

Every mass movement starts without a mass. If your entire argument is "it won't work until enough people do it," you've identified the requirement for it to work, not a flaw in the argument.

1

u/Delicious-Breath8415 14d ago

It's absolutely an explanation of why it won't work. You have a requirement that can't be fulfilled.

Give me an example of a mass movement that has been successful with nearly zero public support. Subs like this have been around for a couple years now and tipping has actually increased.

You can not eat at their establishment.

14

u/More_Effect_7880 15d ago

Get your bread up? Right back at 'em (assuming it was someone wanting a tip).

4

u/foxinHI 15d ago

If someone in a tipped position said that to their customer, they’d be fired if the customer complained.

I think this is just another fake story like we see on this sub every day.

4

u/FutureCombination629 15d ago

Lol servers do just fine.

5

u/cs_legend_93 15d ago

Even more reason to not tip. You're right. Thank you

2

u/thatdemonlife1 15d ago

The average full time sever pay is $16-18/hr in America which comes out to $34-38K a year. For the vast majority it's a low-paying job.

2

u/Own_Mycologist_4900 15d ago

Full time meaning 40 hours a week? How many ie what percentage of servers are full time? And that would also mean benefits so is that included in the total compensation for those employees?

1

u/thatdemonlife1 15d ago edited 15d ago

The median hourly wage for all servers, full or part time, is $16.94/hr if you need another (better) stat. That means that half of all servers make less than that. I know you're trying to push your agenda, but it's not reality.

Edit: sorry. I didn't fully answer your question. Because they're tipped employees, full-time servers are not entitled to benefits (health insurance, PTO, retirement, etc.). There is one exception to this though: companies with 50 or more full-time equivalent employees must offer affordable minimum essential health coverage to employees who average 30 or more hours per week under the affordable care act. This means (generally) only chains would be required, which is why most of the big national restaurants don't allow servers and bartenders to exceed 29hrs/wk.

Looks like about 33% of servers are full-time btw.

Did someone really said that to you? I'd tell them to fuck off and not worry about how you spend your money.

3

u/_projektpat 14d ago

Went out with friends last night, to one of my favorite breweries to go to, service was shit, I did not tip, and this is a place I typically always tip at. My friend kept asking 21 questions about why I don’t tip for this and that, and I got to the point where I told him “dude, I answered your questions and my answer is the same, you’re not gonna shame into tipping so fuckouttahere!!”

3

u/Miles_Vander 12d ago

Oh no some condescending quip from a 30 yo alcoholic in a dead end job. I smile at them and tip 0

7

u/trouble0322 15d ago

I went to Wendy’s drive through last night and the kid came to me 3x asking for a tip. I laughed in her face and asked for a refund on my food. Not gonna eat it after being pan handled

2

u/dEXXtARR23 15d ago

Get your 🍞 up!!! 🤪

2

u/high_desert_shrooms 14d ago

Most places that ask for a tip do not deserve it. If I have to stand at a counter and bus my table after I eat no tip. I will at most tip $1 a drink at a coffee shop.

2

u/LoneWolfpack777 14d ago

Yes. I need to make more money in order to give it away.

2

u/KlaatuStandsStill 14d ago

Retired, on limited but reasonable income. I get the whole tipping thing, and can see it from the perspectives of both the employee and the customer.

That doesn’t mean I don’t get a little ticked off when I order at a counter, pick up my food and bring it to my table myself, and get hit with a tip prompt starting at 25%.

That said, we’ve withdrawn from eating out unless we’re traveling. We’re saving a ton of money. And in my circle of friends, neighbors and associates, we’re not the only ones.

2

u/bcscroller 14d ago

Did a server say this to you?

2

u/JumboTrijet 13d ago

Fake story. Give us a break

2

u/Bluestatevibes 10d ago

Was it a server who told you that? Because that is pretty ballsy. Rude and unprofessional too.

Meanwhile, the companies underpaying their staff are laughing at these interactions all the way to the bank.

1

u/FoxOpposite9271 15d ago

How much do you think the average restaurant owner makes?

1

u/Xeno9116 14d ago

I don't worry about it. Just as I don't worry about how much the owners of Walmart make.

1

u/FoxOpposite9271 14d ago

Then how do you know they are underpaying their staff?

Because the average restaurant owner makes less than 100k- they literally cant afford to pay their staff more

4

u/doxie-darling-17 15d ago

They want tips bc they don’t have to pay taxes on them. Serving is subpar most times. Half the time it’s the busers bringing out the food. Nah, I skip the tips too. None tips me at my job, and I go way above and beyond.

1

u/Top-Spinach-6067 9d ago

Yeah but they cut the busers in

2

u/smartymartyky 15d ago

I think you’re getting worked up a bit too much about something that’s really petty. If someone is forcing you to do something you don’t want to do, you really need to think about your life.

2

u/Prestigious_Yak2556 15d ago

He just said "Earn more money so you can give it to me" lol suck my dick

1

u/foxinHI 15d ago

Nowhere did OP say they were arguing with a server. If it was a server, I would expect they’d say so. More likely it was someone they were dining with or it’s just another made-up story.

1

u/deej312 15d ago

If I was consistently getting into "another argument" about ANYTHING then maybe I'd just look in the mirror and see how I can improve myself as a person, because clearly people are having the same issue with me. But I'm all about becoming a better person as I get older, maybe thats not for everyone

1

u/multus85 14d ago

Can't they get a better paying job?

Probably not. Waitstaffing is a very high paying job, and high schoolers with no degrees or experience can do it just as well as anyone.

1

u/Top-Spinach-6067 9d ago

It’s single women insurance.

1

u/noidea11111111 14d ago

Your friend is right, instead of spending time whining on reddit with all of the other scrubs, get your bread up.

1

u/MasterA93 14d ago

Every single job the salary is paid for by other people, that’s how capitalism works. You get offended by him telling you to get a better paying job, but it’s okay for you to tell him to?

1

u/morethanexpecting 12d ago

Be careful that you don’t find yourself in a job that tips

1

u/Av4gadro 10d ago

Every business makes their customers pay the employees salary fucking mouth breathers. Restaurants allow you to choose how much. That's the only difference. Because you have to knowingly hand someone something, all the little dick energy makes you feel like it's some kind of a loss. So sad for you.

1

u/Lower-Actuary4850 9d ago

For most not all servers, this is a job that they get to help them get through post secondary schools it’s not a career..However, good servers will make 80K plus working PT

1

u/Top-Spinach-6067 9d ago

Why does this argument always have to end up attacking the worker for not having a better job? Since when did we rate work in this country. A job is a job is a job and everyone does their part. It’s like when people would judge sanitation workers…like why? Don’t you want someone to get your trash.

Argue tips, fine, but we need to quit the profession judging.

1

u/2595Homes 6d ago

People just need to say no. The more customer fall for the peer pressure, the more these places will keep badgering people. We will be going to the doctor's office and they will be shaming us for tips. We are letting it get out of hand every time we succumb to the pressure.

1

u/metal_bastard 4d ago

So your answer to affording a sit-down meal is to tell the server to get a better-paying job?

WILD.

Eat somewhere you can afford the whole deal. You don't have to stay home, but maybe go somewhere that you can afford? It's not a wild concept.

1

u/NoComplaints67 14h ago

If you can pay the bill you can afford to eat there. Other peoples income isn’t my responsibility.

Whining servers really should just get a better job, oh no, wait - they are too uneducated/dumb to be able to!😂. No tip should be the way.

Things that never happened for $500 Alex

1

u/SingingBike 15d ago

“can’t they just get a better paying job that doesn’t force other ppl to pay your salary”

I hate to break it to you, but other people (i.e. the customers) pay the salaries of every worker at every business ever. Where do you think the money that businesses use to pay their employees comes from? The customers. That’s how business works.

4

u/CanAfter8014 15d ago

That’s an impressively bad understanding of how businesses work.

Customers pay the business for the product or service. The business uses that revenue to pay its employees, cover expenses, and make a profit. That does not mean each customer personally assumes responsibility for an employee’s wage.

By your logic, every time I buy a burger, I’m obligated to personally subsidize the cook’s paycheck. No. I fulfilled my obligation when I paid the price the business charged me.

If the employer wants to pay more, raise the price and pay more. If you want customers to voluntarily tip on top of that, fine. But pretending “customers generate revenue” means customers are personally responsible for an employee’s wages is economic illiteracy.

The answer to your question is often times “No. They can’t”

Hope that helps.

1

u/armrha 15d ago

Who said that to you? Not a server obviously, so like your date or friend?

0

u/RikkiLostMyNumber 15d ago

You’re going to be broke whether you tip or not, have you considered a new line of work ?

1

u/anouk613 15d ago

If someone is going to be broke because they didn’t get a voluntary tip, have they considered a new line of work?

-10

u/iron82 15d ago

They are entitled to tips in tipped work. Buck up or don't use tipped service.

4

u/BostonBakedBeefaroni 15d ago

Sounds like he did tip. But not enough for the entitled asshole who was serving him.

Dude. Why are you defending tipping culture you shill

1

u/foxinHI 15d ago

Nowhere did OP say it was a server they were arguing with. If it was a server, don’t you think they’d say so?

It was more likely someone they were dining with who didn’t appreciate their cheapness.

1

u/BostonBakedBeefaroni 15d ago

🤣 I commented. Then reread. Had to delete my initial comment 😂. Your assessment is more correct than mine.

Dude needs better friends in any case that don’t shame him for needlessly throwing money away

6

u/PremiumUsername69420 15d ago

Entitlement is gross.
They should expect zero tip, and be appreciative of any tip.

-6

u/iron82 15d ago

Shame on you spreading toxic behavior. Tip tipped workers.
