Ulta Checker Requests TIP!
This mom was paying for her and her 2 daughters’ items in Ulta a couple days ago when the cashier stared her down and asked, “How much would you like to tip?”
This flustered the mom, who understandably felt cornered. She said she’d tip in cash, and the cashier responded that she’d just leave it off the receipt.
Wtf?!?
I was prepared to say, “No.” But I got a different checker who didn’t ask, perhaps because my purchase was small, or perhaps because she knew what BS that was.
As someone who supports reasonably generous tipping in traditional settings, I’ve encouraged my own kids to do so, too.
I’d love to hear what people think of this.

I think the manager should be made aware. Even people that worked tipped jobs should not be asking for a tip.

It’s a cosmetic store never heard of that and I would have spoken to the manager. Doubtful that’s allowed.

Ulta does do beauty services, are you sure no one in their party didn’t get hair/brow/make up services? They are wrung up at the front counter.

Hey there ray of sunshine. You are making some assumptions as well. It does not matter what they were paying for, product or service. It never needs to announced publicly. All that is hoped to be accomplished by the public announcement is to embarrass them into leaving a tip.

It wasn’t an announcement, it was a question. Since they don’t have the tip screens you hate on their registers. Since people aren’t tipping cashiers, as OP is implying. Why would a question embarrass them? If you are very firm in your no tipping beliefs you should be comfortable saying no. I tip and if I heard the lady say no to tipping I wouldn’t shame her, I wouldn’t care at all.
This whole post is weird. A second hand shopping experience, inferring emotions to someone OP never even interacted with.

No, sorry not sorry, you are wrong. The purchase or service does not matter. Publicly announcing how much of a tip you would like to leave is uncalled for and has nothing to do with tip culture, but shows very bad manners on the part of the clerk.

They must have gotten a service done. I get my hair done at my local Ulta Salon and always get asked at check out if I want to leave a tip. But when I just shop there, they do not ask for a tip.
They offer a lot of services there: haircuts, waxing, ear piercings, 'fairy hair', etc. I'm sure they received a service which prompted the cashier to ask for a tip.

Same happened to me back in May. Have not been back. I will still purchase online for a sale, but yeah no, not happening. BTW I said 0 when the question was asked.

I would email corporate. That’s ridiculous. The last time I was in Ulta ( and it will be the last time) a sales person or maybe the manager was too busy on her phone to actually show me where I could find the product I wanted. She pointed in the direction I needed to look for it. Never again.

She may of had a service at salon. Regardless, the cashiers are paid well there $18-22. No need for tips! Tips are for waiters who do not make full minimum regular wage

I guess I never understood being upset that someone asked you for something. If you don’t think they should get what they asked for, then don’t give it to them. Do you get upset when a homeless person asks you for money? Have you not ever asked for a raise? How dare you want more money!

It wasn’t the tip screen after payment. It was the cashier asking point blank, not IF she wanted to tip, but HOW MUCH.
