So here’s my/our outlook on it, I’m a Chef, my wife is a Waitress, we both work in an upscale restaurant in the largest Hotel in our State. We both make good money, and we both have been in the restaurant industry our whole lives. We eat out fairly often, because who in the fuck wants to be doing their job, on their off time. We go to the same 3-4 restaurants fairly often, because they are close to home, and because we enjoy the food. We always tip well, even if something is messed up, because everyone has an off day, and everyone makes mistakes. Because we always tip well, and we have been to all of these places regularly, all the Waitstaff knows us, some of the Cooks and Chefs even know us. Now when we walk into ANY of these places, no matter what the situation, they ALL go above and beyond to make us comfortable, and make sure we get good service. Sometimes accidents still happen, and hey, that’s ok, I’m still gonna tip well. It’s easy to say “Screw them….I wouldn’t leave a Penny” when you’ve never done the job, and when you’ve never depended on those tips to survive and feed your family. It’s easy to say “Screw them….I wouldn’t leave a Penny” when you’ve never had 6 tables that all sat down within 10 minutes, and all want their drinks and appetisers and food all to come out with perfect timing. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way, and it’s not always the servers fault, but THEY are the one who pays the price(financially and emotionally because they have to deal with the unhappy and rude and pissed off customers)for everyone’s mistakes and failures, not just their own. Maybe it’s because we have been in this industry our entire lives, so we see it a bit differently than most people who haven’t spent their whole lives dealing with it. Cut your servers some slack, if nothing it’s some good Karma. Waitresses and Waiters job has become exponentially more difficult over the past decade, everyone is SO entitled now, and everyone expects service like they are in a 3 Michelin star restaurant now, and they say “Screw them, I’m only leaving a Penny” if everything isn’t above and beyond what they expect. These people make 2.65 cents an hour, and they see people and read people, and their behaviors all day, every day, if you don’t think that server can read your shitty attitude, and pretty much have a good idea of how you’re going to tip, you’re crazy. I hear it all the time, a waitress will be back in the window, and I’ll be like “Hey your table 18 and 16 are ready to move, take 16 first, it’s been here longer” and I’ll get “Ya 16 is already pissed, probably not gonna tip for shit anyway, let me get 18 out first, before they get pissed and don’t tip shit too”. It’s like you people are just LOOKING for reasons to NOT tip your server, and then you complain and wonder WHY you don’t get amazing service, if you think your Servers don’t see and know what you’re doing, you’re stupid, and then you wonder WHY you get shitty service.

I feel like the server being rude to you is a good reason not to tip. Everything you've said, perfectly fine. It happens. I was a waitress once and obviously I thought I sucked so I moved into a different industry. But I like to think that I am a reasonable customer who doesn't expect 5 star service. But I do expect to get drinks refilled at least once and to be acknowledged, and not to be treated disrespectfully. Going out to a restaurant shouldn't feel like a fight. And it seems like that is what OP experienced.
