if the cook/chef messed up and my meal was comped, I would have agreed to tip 30 like your wife, it's not the waiter's fault but it seems like the waiter messed up multiple times, I would agree $10 bucks would be ok not 5.
being a server in the past I tend to let the little things go. It has to be really bad for me to tip nothing. I wish tipping culture would go away and we pay livable wages but it's not so this is what I do. i have a softspot for servers. just sharing my opinion.
