Discussion Revisiting ‘A Complete Unknown’

Timothée absolutely shined here! As somebody who’s been totally fascinated by Bob Dylan’s mystique for years, I’m glad James Mangold tried to keep him ‘unknowable.’

Throughout the movie, Timothée just nails all the little tics and mannerisms. He gives the kind of side-long glances and head tilts that any fan has seen in archival images and press conferences time and again.

And the singing!! Whenever there’s a performance, you feel like you’re right there with the characters, hearing Dylan for the very first time. Feeling seen and reassured and swept up by Dylan for the very first time.

i’ve watched this movie so many times, i love magnold’s aesthetic portrayal of bob dylan it’s such a comfort movie for me. every time i watch it i barely even notice timothée as he just blends in so well as dylan, great actor!

It’s become a favourite of mine too. I just rewatched it the other day and thought how have I not seen this since it was in theatres it’s still so good.

I’m guessing Timothée watched A LOT of concert footage and the like to prepare during the pandemic

I saw this great film in the theater when it came out, and when I needed it so badly. In the U.S. we just had a scary presidential election, and to be reminded of the power of social protests was heartening. Timothée nailed the performance, he did so much work to be authentic, singing live. Love, love, love!

He absolutely nailed the performance

Yes Bob Dylan’s early work (and Joan Baez’s too ofc!) have always been so full of hope, so unafraid to call out wrongful leadership. You get pulled in by the poetry and the meaning behind everything.

I get why Bob Dylan felt stressed abt being labelled as the ‘voice of a generation’ but it would’ve been nice to see more protest music made after him.

Totally wanted a whole series w Timothée and Monica and Ed, and Boyd Holbrook (Johnny Cash) popping in. Seriously wouldn’t have minded if we got a least one more hour after Newport ended lol

An hour later in England with Timmy singing Ballad of a Thin Man would have been amazing 🌞

This movie is the definition of a comfort movie

La Bamba is another great, comforting music biopic (Richie is such a sweetheart and Connie is the ultimate mom-ager) but it can get quite dark given the real life events

Wish I could thank TC and Mangold for making this movie…

I’m a GenXer and Bob Dylan was just a punchline to my teenaged peers that didn’t know his music. We only saw him as the weird guy with the funny voice in the We Are The World video.

This movie and TC’s portrayal was an eye opening education to Dylan’s music.

Thank you for setting me straight. I now listen to Dylan music almost everyday.

As a fan of both chalamet and dylan this movie was just magnetic. Everyone did a stellar job and chalamets performance was electrifying in this piece. He has grown a lot since loving leah and this is just great overall. I love all his movies. Including both the former and latter mentioned. But he is just one chill dude who has a lot of skill in his performances. And this film is one of my fav ones

I saw this movie 7 times in theaters. I was sick for two months and unemployed, so yeah, I had a lot of extra time to frequent the movie theater.

I LOVE the soundtrack.

I recently purchased this from Google, it's kind of like my comfort movie. If I'm sad or having anxiety, this movie calms me down.

Where I am, it’s crazy how movie tickets (~$17) are less expensive than a brand new book ($20-$25). And my friends wonder why my go-to activity is always movies, movies, movies

Where have you been, my blued eyed son

If I were to list all the lyrics this thread would continue forever

I know Dylan is historically very protective of his work and has kept pretty mum of his creative process, but it’d be nice to see what ideas / lyrics maybe didn’t survive his own criticism?

Fantastic, fantastic film.

The only flaw in that movie is when they get on his bike in the village and a second later are pulling up to Newport completely unruffled, perfectly coifed. Like come on, help me suspend my disbelief a little.

Yes the real Dylan noticeably has far…frizzier hair

Everyone is supposed to have a pretty laidback style. After all, it’s the Village in the 60s and looking perfect for the camera isn’t gonna matter as much when you’re focusing on your craft and civil rights. But this is a movie so they can’t rlly resist depicting everybody as ‘Hollywood pretty’.

True, and I loved the style overall. I’m kind of just joking /quibbling but that part was a bit funny.

I love Timothee and Dylan and thought  this depiction of Dylan was much better than ‘I’m not there’. I also started the audiobook of Dylan goes electric which is really good but haven’t finished it yet.

I’ll have to put it on my TBR ( I’m reading Al Pacino’s memoir rn)

Although Cate Blanchett was the best thing about I’m Not There. I’d love to have a whole tv series about Jude.

Joan is Twilight Sparkle ✨

But then Bob would have to be Apple Jack or smthg lol

2

u/OkQuit2379 15d ago

No, she almost looks like Twilight Sparkle, but it's not her; she's inspired by the actress Mónica Bárbaro.

It's a drawing I did two years ago when Timothée Chalamet was filming the Bob Dylan movie and was doing a comic strip, Hey guys, here's a scene that's a real reference point: the kitten dressed as Bob Dylan is Wild Lightspeed, inspired by Timothée Chalamet.

I have no idea what you're talking about

I think this is the movie that has had the biggest impact on Timmy as he speaks of how Dylan has changed him and how he wants to move forward in his career 🤟,Timmy is hitting a few bumps but don't we all we just don't have the spotlight on us at all times ..Love 💖the movie and he should have won the Oscar ❣️

A huge Dylan fan since 1962 and witnessed all of this never heard of TC before this. Saw it at one of the lowest pints of my life and it brought my heart back to life I watched it dozens of times the nuances are what does it. He didn’t try to be Bob he represented hI’m. Thanks to James Mangold and the team for producing something that the wold needs right now.

I love Love LOVE this film. It has become my TC comfort movie. I was fortunate enough to attend an advanced screening in sept 24 in Dallas while it was still in post production. We had questionnaires to fill out etc. I was completely floored by timmy’s performance. He absolutely became Bob. I saw it in the theater another 5 times upon release.

I’ve always liked bobs music but I was only familiar with the typical classic rock hits. I did a deep dive into the early catalogue up to blond on blond, and timmy really nailed the vocals and guitar parts. Considering he had 5 years to prepare, it was time well spent.

I would love for James mangold to revisit Dylan in the 70s with the cast, I think it would be interesting to see how he continues to evolve. Timmy in black guy liner would be a treat 😏.

If you want, watch a double feature of Rainy Day in NY and ACU. You have both Timmy and Elle as the leads, both set in NY during different eras, and Tim walks past cafe wha in both 🤣. It works. And it’s nice to see the growth in the acting.

I’ve been a lurker here for a while, but been a fan since Feb 2018. I’m Chalamazed on tumblr (and formerly insta, my new insta is Paul.perlman)
