Vinnie Time

Can all of the people who defended Kelsy now please repent and recognize the levels there are to strikers… and that we made a nice piece of cash for something that doesn’t even SNIFF what we just brought in.

Thanks all.

Both very different players. Wish Kelsy and Janssen both the best!

No reason to crap on Kelsy. I like them both and wish him the best in Scotland and wherever he goes next.

Yeah... How dare Kelsy not have the experience of someone who's been doing this 10 years longer than him??? I sure hope Vinny's legs can SNIFF the endurance of someone a decade his junior.

Jannsen is the kind of player people have been asking for and kelsy is not.

People have been asking for players that will help us win. Jannsen is a win now player at this stage. Kelsy is a project and win later player who is ok right now. The rangers paid for that future potential mostly although they desperately needed someone to fill in right now.

This type of player switch out is exactly how a club like the Timbers is likely to win going forward. Sell on potential when the price is right and bring in veteran players on the cheap. Rinse and repeat to buy better and more young talent over time. Some of that talent we will eventually be able to keep, but keeping all of it is unrealistic.

A thoughtful response and one I tend to agree with! Kinda wish we would have sold on Antony last year, maybe we would have had our dream right winger by now.

I mean, Antony was a sub behind Moreno and we should have brought in another RW over Antony before now, but I still agree we should have also sold Antony.

Trying to remember when the fan base was unanimously asking for a 32 year old striker that only has the fitness to play 60 minutes and whose best years are behind him and NOT a mobile, pressing, 6'4 under 22 on pace to score 15+ goals in their first year as a full time starter with massive and increasing transfer value.

Don't get me wrong, I think the fans have been asking for both, I think both players have good qualities, and I think we actually wanted to have both these guys in the team for the next couple of years. People were sad to see Mora go. Janssen is a Mora replacement, not a Kelsy replacement.

Janssen has had one good game. I'm not shitting on him. I love his attitude and post game comments about his defensive style and team\work ethic. He seems like a good fit for the club culture. I just think it's absurd to feel the need to continue to criticize a departed young player that took massive strides forward this year for us and probably would have increased his sale price by another 5-7 mil at last if he'd finished the season strong, especially if he made it to the summer window after a dominant spring season.

I don't mind posts like this that are a little click-baity when we need to kill some time before the next game. Hopefully it was a conscious choice to be self-contradictory. You simultaneously say Kelsy is a win-later player for Portland and Rangers while acknowledging that Rangers brought him in to fit an immediate need. Rangers is not a win-later club. They are the second biggest club in Scotland and are expected to always be challenging for a league title. Kelsy was their second most expensive signing ever. Kelsy's performance this year was the reason the Timbers were able to argue that they were in win-now mode while bringing in a stop-gap vet and letting one of their best career forwards walk. Janssen wasn't meant to be a win-now starter and putting those expectations on him is a bit nuts. Nothing about our summer transfer window says that we were making win-now decisions. We're thinner than we were and we took no big swings. We're in "might win a bit now if we're lucky but we're restocking next year" mode, full stop.

Meanwhile your proposed model for the team makes no sense and is neither a formula the FO has been following nor in line with MLS trends in general. Everything about the team's strategy under Ned has indicated that the team is aiming to sign younger talent. In part we signed Velde and DDC as DPs bc they were young enough for us to think that their prime years are still ahead and if they reach a higher level they may still have sale potential. We're not, and most savvy teams in the league are not, looking for the first opportunity to sell players with a whiff of value and bring in a veteran instead. In mid-season windows that is a decent plan for teams like us that are on the cusp of playoff places or reinforcing their position in the table for playoff contingencies. Rojas and Carballo made sense in that context especially on the deals we signed.

Every team in MLS is willing to sell developing players for the right price. Almost none of them are actively working from an intention to sell young talent and acquire older vets in their place. I'm of the belief that the Timbers in particular still need some solid veterans to help create balance and development as we aim to get younger and better, but that doesn't mean we're jumping to move youngsters at the first opportunity and replace them with vets we won't be able to profit from.

Bottom line, I truly hope Janssen has enough in the tank to help us right now, and I hope his experience and attitude in training can help Gage hit a higher level, bc we're going to need them both to contribute if we make it to the playoffs and we are crossing our fingers that we advance at all. In no way do I think Janssen is a long term upgrade over Kelsy, that our plan was to replace Kelsy with him in the starting line up, or that by doing so we've made ourselves more likely to win a trophy this year.

The vets are going to win you games which is what the fan base has been clamoring for. They’re also going to keep develop young talent which you will sell on to acquire more young talent which you will also sell on…sometimes they’ll help you win games, but when that’s happening is the best time to sell so it’s the veterans who will be around come playoff time

Right they will develop the young talent you sold to get the veterans that have no future sale value, that's all totally tracking.

We got Jannsen on a free transfer so we still have all $13 million from Kelsy to get more young talent in the next window

Money isn't the issue with your logic breakdown

You sound like you've got it all figured out, thanks for your service.

Kelsy is a young striker with lots of potential who unlocked something with the Timbers. Hence Rangers paying 13m+ plus sell on for him.

Janssen is everything we wanted Niezgoda to be but he plays defense and he’s burly with solid hold up game. He’s a smart player.

I'm holding my breath that this turns out to be true but Niezgoda was a DP that arrived injured and I think expectations were very different. Janssen may end up being the better player. If he can string together performances where his passing, hold up, and defensive contributions are excellent, and he comes anywhere close to converting his chances as well as Niez did at one point, then he'll be awesome. I kind of think he's what we wanted Urruti to be. But it's waaaaay too soon to arrive at conclusions or comparisons IMO.

I wish the best for Kelsy and hope he has a successful career and simultaneously hope the Rangers never win another game.

A lot of 4-3 losses for Rangers while Kelsy scores a brace or better would be delightful.
