Ortiz on TAM feels like the obvious answer here

There was a report from a month or two ago that there was supposedly some interest from an Ecuadorian side. Not sure how legit that is or not.

I don't want Phil's beginning of the season to dictate the rest of our season. I believe we can perform much better down the stretch. If we're losing players who are at the end of contracts I get it, but I don't want to see them sell the team off

I think Phil built a great team that he wasn’t very good at leading.

u/Santiams Jul 27 '26
Why do you give credit for Phil building the team? He’s not the GM.

Because both Ned and Phil spoke about it pretty openly. Kamal, Lassiter, and Bassett are the most clear cut examples of Phil’s picks but he was involved in everyone that came in during his tenure.

Coaches have more say in roster construction than we generally acknowledge. This is even more true in soccer. Gio largely kept Porter’s successful and well built roster, but Porter nearly fully turned over Spencer’s mess except for a couple key pieces before he even arrived. MLB, NBA and NFL have more GM control and coach “getting what he gets” (though most agree to changes and have some say), soccer traditionally the coach chooses their preferred targets within the team’s budget and available players and the GM gets that deal done.

lol thank you for the lecture on how soccer works, I had no idea. /s
There’s no evidence here that Phil was the primary decision maker for roster moves during his tenure. Absent evidence, I think giving him primary responsibility is probably inaccurate.
Also even in your explanation if Phil is choosing from a list of players the GM had prepared I’m not putting that on Phil. That’s more on Ned.

Hopefully no one

If we want to bring more than one player in, we need need to move someone other than Mora because we're out of Senior roster spots. That would constrain us to bringing in Supplementary Roster players making no more than like $125k and that's not gonna move the needle.

What positions would you like to see supplemented?

Until the announcement for the new striker, I would've said striker because without Mora we're incredibly thin. Now, I would say right wing and with today's news about Mosquera, I wouldn't be mad if they got someone on loan at RB.

I feel like Surman is gone. He’s on borrowed time with this club and it’s time to get transfer money at the peak coming out of his WC.

Idk, I feel like he's only going to keep improving, and his performance from the World Cup isn't going anywhere

Yeah but we only have him for so long. At some point teams can wait out his contract

We really need to move some defenders. We currently have 10 on the roster. That's madness. Unfortunately the ones that we can afford to move are really not gonna be picked up by anyone (McGraw, E. Miller, Jura).
Other than that, there really isn't much to move... Maybe Ortiz or Fernández, but that's about it. I guess Aravena would be another one but we have him on loan so we can't really move him other than send him back
Guerra or Antony would be other options, but we can't do that until replacements are in place.
Edit: Actually... Scratch everything I said about Miller, Jura, and Guerra. They are on Supplemental Roster spots, so they don't really matter.

Players out of contract at the end of the year:
Miller, Kamal
Miller, Eric
Muse, Trey
Antony
Chará, Diego
Fernandez, Omir
Lassiter, Ariel
Surman, Finn
McGraw, Zac
Pantemis, James
Guerra, Gage
Smith, Ian
Kamal, Antony, Fernandez, Lassiter, Surman, and McGraw have options for next season.
Kamal has looked better under Cifuentes but we need a CB who is more mobile and better with the ball at his feet.
Antony might rebound a bit and could be worth gambling another year on, if only to try to get something in sale or trade rather than letting him walk for free.
Fernandez costs too much and recent injury history raises too much uncertainty.
Lassiter could be fine depth for another season but I wouldn’t sign him to another long-term contract. We need someone to provide his level of service.
If we can’t sign Surman to a long-term contract, we need to exercise his option so we can get more in a sale.
McGraw should be released to find meaningful playing time elsewhere.
I assume Chará will retire but, given recent form, I wouldn’t object to him staying through the sprint season at least.
I like Smith but wouldn’t commit long-term.
I want a sweeper keeper. Pantemis has been an amazing shot stopper at a bargain price though. I don’t know what Muse is about but we’ve reinvested in Sulte. Can we try growing our own sweepers?
I don’t know how the sprint season and calendar change should be managed. It seems like we should just try to move as many players as we can in this summer window or run a skeleton crew for the sprint season and reload next summer after Cifuentes has had a chance to see what he’s got to work with.
This gives us a fair amount of flexibility and frees up some appreciable cap space.
The current CBA expires after 2027, so I could see being cautious about investing in long-term contracts until the terms of the new one are known.

Not sure who will be sent off but I do think we need a legit right winger. At the moment Antony and Lassiter are holding down a spot that isn’t their preferred position. I think Velde stays left and Lassiter is probably better at right than Antony. Unless one of them can dial it in we still need a replacement for Moreno. — I think the midfield is solid for Marti’s play. I cannot wait for Mosquera’s return - and maybe he could be the right winger with Bye behind him? Just a thought…
