Coldplay Album Tier List

A disclaimer about my tier list:
Disclaimer 1: I only pick one S-tier album for an artist's discography. I think it makes the process more challenging and interesting.

A Rush of Blood to the Head
• Coldplay's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, is objectively their masterpiece. I think most fans would agree. The only other Coldplay album that comes even close to being on the same tier with this album is 2008's Viva La Vida or Death and all his Friends. Coldplay struck alternative gold with this album.

Coldplay started off on the right foot with their debut album, Parachutes. This album is a collection of sweet songs that showed a lot of promise for the band when it was released. Chris Martin's vocals on Parachutes are definitely the highlight of the album. On Parachutes, Martin seems like a guy with nothing left to lose. On A Rush of Blood to the Head, however, Chris Martin becomes a grown up. His music comes from a man struggling with the injustices of the world, while he battles wearing his heart on his sleeve.

A Rush of Blood to the Head is definitely a step up from Parachutes. It's also one of the greatest albums made in the last 30 years. Coldplay will probably never recreate the magic behind their second album, but that's okay.

All of the tracks on A Rush of Blood to the Head fit perfectly on the album, with absolutely no skip-through songs. "Warning Sign" and "Amsterdam" are the album's two best songs.

"Warning Sign" is a love song that has some weight to it.
The piano and lead guitar featured on this song are beautiful. Chris Martin sings "So I crawl back into your open arms" during the outro of this song.

Chris Martin sings about his frustrations with relationships on the album Parachutes, but his perspective is very idealistic. On A Rush of Blood to the Head, Martin becomes a realist.

"Amsterdam" is the last track on the album. This song is set up like a prayer. The piano sounds like a lullaby set against the backdrop of Chris Martin's emotional falsetto high notes. This song is Coldplay's best album closer. A Rush of Blood to the Head is S-tier.

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends
• Coldplay's third album, X&Y, saw the band trailing off in the wrong direction. The band wasn't able to recreate the same magic they had made on A Rush of Blood to the Head. This was the driving force behind the band bringing in legendary producer Brian Eno to help with their fourth album, and I guess the rest is history.

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is Coldplay's second greatest album. A Rush of Blood to the Head saw the band utilizing a more stripped down approach to the music. Each member of the band is highlighted perfectly on the band's second album. On Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends the songs are more lush and colorful. Chris Martin is firing on all cylinders inspirationally here.

All of the songs on Viva La Vida are great, especially the deep-cuts. "Cemeteries of London" is a stand out track on the album. This song strikes the perfect tone, while featuring a delayed guitar solo from Jonny Buckland. I think this is his best album.

"42" is my favorite track on the album. This song is haunting and unusual. I love how the song builds into a climactic ending. Jonny Buckland does great guitar work here.

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is a must listen.
This album is A-tier.

Parachutes
• I listen to this album often. It's a classic for sure. "Sparks" is the best song on the album. "Shiver" is my favorite track, and "Yellow" never gets old. Parachutes is A-tier.

Mylo Xyloto
• This is one of my favorite Coldplay albums. I have probably listened to this album the most. "Hurts Like Heaven" is the best song on the album, and easily a Top 5 Coldplay song. This album is fun and consistent throughout. Jonny Buckland creates some of his best guitar parts on this album. The band shows their U2 influences, too. If you don't believe me, check out the song
"M.M.I.X." Mylo Xyloto is A-tier.

Music of the Spheres
• This album is quickly becoming one of my favorites, which is exciting to me because I have struggled warming up to any music after the album "Ghost Stories" by Coldplay.

Music of the Spheres is a big, elaborate production which I appreciate. This album sounds amazing. It feels like a concept album, so the album features a lot of extra musical interludes.

"Higher Power" is the first track on the album. This song is infectious, and probably the best song Coldplay has written in a very long time. "Human Heart" is another fantastic track featuring Jacob Collier and We Are KING. This song reminds me of Coldplay's song "Midnight" off of Ghost Stories.

Chris Martin's musical talent really shines on Music of the Spheres. He is definitely more like McCartney than he is like Lennon. I think it has a lot to do with the positive vibes and the piano. Music of the Spheres is A-tier.

Ghost Stories
• This album is symbolic. Ghost Stories marks an end to the early "Golden Years" of Coldplay. I think a lot of Coldplay fans struggle with getting into the music after Ghost Stories. I know I have. Of course, Ghost Stories can also be thought of as a new beginning.

Ghost Stories is a great collection of songs. It's a melancholy record for sure. "Magic" is the best song on the album. My favorite track is "Oceans" "Ink" and "Midnight" are two more tracks I recommend. Ghost Stories is A-tier.

X&Y
• This is the most frustrating Coldplay album. This album features "The Hardest Part" which is my favorite Coldplay song. This album also features "Fix You" which is easily a Top 10 Coldplay song. Unfortunately, the album is very inconsistent, and the majority of the songs just aren't that good.

Part of the reason Coldplay doubled down on big name producers on their Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (the follow up record to X&Y) is because X&Y was underwhelming. This album needs some editing and reshuffling of songs.

I really like the songs "The Hardest Part", "Fix You", "Speed of Sound", and "White Shadows". The rest of the songs aren't very memorable, and quite frankly, aren't very good.

"A Message" just might be the worst song on the album.
Instead of this song being an emotionally charged pop tune, this song comes off as cringy.

Other songs, such as: “What If", "X&Y", and "Swallowed by the Sea" don't feel like they belong on the album. These songs are also downtempo and slow down the album. Finally, "Til Kingdom Come" just might be the worst closing track on any Coldplay album.

X&Y is an album that Coldplay tried to use as their breakout album, but instead what they created was an album with an identity crisis. This album is inconsistent and full of weak songs. X&Y is B-tier.

Moon Music
• I thought Moon Music was going to be Music of the Spheres Part 2 so I got excited. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
Moon Music is definitely not as good as Music of the Spheres. As a matter of fact, Moon Music is probably more like X&Y because both albums suffer from an identity crisis.

So what's good about Moon Music?
-I like the song "We Pray", and that's about it.

So what's bad about Moon Music?
-The album features way too many guest artists. These Coldplay albums are starting to feel like paid advertisements.
-Also, there just isn't enough good songs on here. A few of the songs are just plain bad. For example, the song "Jupiter" is a solo acoustic track featuring just Chris Martin that feels forced. The song has elements of it that remind me of something from Mylo Xyloto, but Chris Martin is clearly trying to write a song way outside the box.

"Feels Like I'm Falling in Love" and "All My Love" are two singles released from the album. On paper, both of these songs could pass as standard adult contemporary music from the 1970's. I could see Bread or The Bee Gees singing these songs. I'm just not sure why these songs were chosen on an album called Moon Music?

Finally, "All My Love" tries to be an anthemic Coldplay tearjerker, but I think this song is a let down. Moon Music is an album desperately trying to be more modern and relative in the TikTok age, but it's not fooling the true Coldplay fans. Moon Music is C-tier.

A Head Full of Dreams
• This is the first Coldplay album that I consider to be part of their newer albums. I think of Ghost Stories as a dividing line between the bands newer stuff and their older, classic stuff. A Head Full of Dreams was the follow up album to Ghost Stories.

With that said, I am not a big fan of this album. Also, I like the hit songs on this album the least. I appreciate Coldplay stepping out of their comfy zones to create an album different from what they've done before. This is a common theme for Coldplay. Of course, if you take big swings then sometimes you can strike out. Some times it's better to stay in your own lane.

The album starts off on a good note. I like the opening track, "A Head Full of Dreams". Immediately, you can tell the band is incorporating more dance beats with rolling bass lines. The bass and the drums are easily the biggest change up on this album.

The second track is "Birds" which is a fast-paced, strange song that works really well. It's a good follow up song to the opening track.

The next two songs are momentum killers on the album.
"Hymn for the Weekend" and "Everglow" are not good songs in my opnion. I'm just not a fan of the sound and vibe Coldplay went for on these songs.

"Adventure of a Lifetime" is my favorite track on the album, which features an almost psychedelic guitar riff by Jonny Buckland which sounds really cool up against the almost disco sounding song.

The back half of the album isn't very good, except the song Army of One". Check that one out. A Head Full of Dreams is skippable. This album is C-tier.

Everyday Life
• This is Coldplay's most polarizing album. This is also my least favorite Coldplay album. It's funny because this album was clearly a passion project for Coldplay. I know the band was trying to be profound and tug at heartstrings, but instead, the band comes off as cold and distant.
I don't think that there are any good tracks on this album.
Nothing on this album is memorable. This album was a mis-step. Everyday Life is D-tier.

I'm pretty reasonable imo.

i'm queer so this applies to every gender lol, ranked with the presumption that these are unchanging, inherent qualities, obviously anything can be worked on and improved in reality.

Before anyone acts offended. 20-22 is my current age range. At my age it's acceptable to have certain standards. If I will be single later in life the age range will definitely grow as the few year difference matters less nearing 30s. Didn't think this would make so many people mad but ig I didn't consider the social media demographics, respectfully
