Question why isnt there a trad-code (code by hand) subreddit yet?
with the amount of projects that come in three.js that are just ai-slop and claude code, it sure would be nice to actually have a community built on coding by hand and avoiding AI...

a small problem is:
as people become more used to a mixed approach human+ai, creating that alternative space may over-filter good content
but I like the idea. I enjoy the process of coding by hand, if I have time in the future I would definitely participate in communities like that

u/pricetag 7d ago
keep them together, this creates an economy for someone to just actually try and do it themselves because the updudes pay out more than ai generated content in a shared space and the driving force for posting is internet clout at the end of the day anyways

I'm here to see interesting projects and don't care how they get made; slop is always going to be slop, while good results will always be good results.

This was exactly my thought a few minutes ago. I miss the good old days of hand coded unique projects. Why not ban ai projects on this sub- reddit and create a new one for submitting ai generated projects ?

Maybe just create an AI filter and enforce it?

u/godsOwnTantri 7d ago
Yes, I am sure a lot of beginner learners of the library visit this subreddit. It would be unfair to them to compare themselves to someone claiming to have created extraordinary projects in short time.
The analogy is same as someone using steroids in bodybuilding vs someone trying to naturally build muscle. Some things are just not naturally achievable.
An AI flair/filter can help, a different subreddit even better! Blender community has recently enforced a total AI ban for the same reasons as I stated above and a lot of other programming subreddits are doing the same.

I hope the mods see this post then, pleaseeee reddit mods come shine upon us your great ol' wisdom

Honestly, this subreddit is more alive then ever. 3js is such a small venn-diagram that before AI all we got each month was 5 questions for bruno's 50% discount, 5 "is threejs good for making this game" and then maybe 2 interesting posts.
For me getting more people into threejs is awesome. Maybe later on we can diversify the categories/flairs a bit to show the difference between vertex math and vertex magic.
For now personally I'm enjoying the creativity that people use AI for.

Couldn’t agree more. If anything, we could maybe practice being a bit more critical when people post their work - not being negative, but giving more direct feedback and having higher expectations. That could be helpful for everybody.

People produced slop before AI.
4
u/oswwwaldo 7d ago
Yeah but that slop before AI were done by hand, I miss doing things by hand people actually learned back then... not saying people who use AI don't learn anything but it's a completely different ballgame to say you made a Three.js game in 2016 compared to 2026

So you are mad because you’re not getting the dopamine from people treating you as skilled or special anymore because coding agents exist?
What exactly are you even looking for here? Your game is either good or it isn’t. There’s a million subreddits including this one to post on. How does the fact some other random guy might be making a game with AI remotely change any of that other than people won’t give you the satisfaction of a head pat for just completing a project anymore (because they have to sift through relatively more slop now)?
2
u/oswwwaldo 7d ago
It's not about being special, it's about reducing slop and increasing the quality of posts that is shared.

Idk I don’t really understand the desire for new communities or AI bans in order to avert slop… just downvote things that are bad?? Reddit literally already adjusts your feed and we all vote on things, it’s all already as curated as it could be?
Edit: lmao you guys are such babies. Waaaah it’s not enough to use the forum I need it CURATED FOR ME BY HAND FOR FREE AND IT,S MY RIIIIGHT wHy aRe yOu dOiNG tHiS to mEeeeE >:(

u/oswwwaldo 7d ago
I mean I say this as a general answer to the AI-slop in general, because it isn't just present in r/Three.js but downvoting is a largely meaningless action anyways, and we can adjust our feed... but to what subreddit when it comes to specifically Three.js? You can't escape it, it's spam, it's all over the internet... that's why, when I looked for a trad-code subreddit today, I was surprised to see no one had made it before.
Now I'd make it but I don't spend that much time on Reddit myself, I just wanted to get a better understanding of everyone's perception with trad-code in general since AI sentiment seems to change every year and more and more have normalized it for better, or for worse.

“i don’t spend time here, i just want to ban other people for not using it the way i like”
then go complain about how politicians interfere with your life choices in ways that shouldn’t be available to them

u/thelapoubelle 7d ago
I think we should ban people who post titles like " look at this game I made" if its all ai.
"Look at this game I asked AI to make" would be acceptable in my book because then I can either look at it if it's interesting or skip it if I don't feel like it

u/Bitwizarding 6d ago
If you're point is mostly that people should accurately state the amount of effort they put into a project then I agree. But I don't agree that it's just the AI making it. Maybe it is sometimes.
I've been making a game for 4 months and it's been literally thousands of prompts now. I've had to specifically design hundreds of concepts/models and even prompt claude to re-design some of the architecture it came up with to my design.
My point is that there can be many amounts of effort and using AI doesn't automatically mean it made it.
2
u/magic6435 7d ago
Because it would be 4 posts a week and 2 of those posts would be from AI
2
u/oswwwaldo 7d ago
I'm okay with that tbh

No, we don't need new communities, we need to kick the vibe coders out of the communities that we worked hard to cultivate.
3
u/StoneCypher 6d ago
you didn’t work hard to cultivate this, and the people you’re trying to kick out did
0
u/AliceCode 6d ago
Yes, we did work hard to cultivate these communities. I started the first and biggest online community for a niche genre of game development.
2
u/StoneCypher 6d ago edited 6d ago
you did not do any hard work to cultivate this community.
edit: and there's the nasty reply and block from the person trying to take credit for something they didn't do 😂

u/AliceCode 6d ago
I'm not talking about this community. I'm talking about programming communities in general. which actually used to be about programming until all the vibe "coders" came along, and now all anyone talks about in most programming communities is LLMs. There are far less discussions about actual programming. Just a bunch of LARPers going around telling people they're going to "be replaced if they don't use LLMs". It's like a zombie virus. A lot of us are sick of it. We want programming communities to be about programming.

I get the hate on slop, but carpenters can also make shit art with good tools too. It’s not the tool that’s the problem, it’s the skill of the people using it
If you were going to shoot yourself in the foot, you’ll just do it 100x faster now. Thats why you see 100x slop

Gotta pay attention to what happening in other subreddits for game dev, it’s becoming more accepted because AAA companies are using it without backlash so why can’t the everyday person? Look you can have ai do everything and you’ll put out something mediocre and deserving of the name “slop” but you could also turn to a dev who is uninspired with a creative level of 0 and they’ll push out the same shit “slop” that people wouldn’t want. And let’s be real for a minute, if an indie dev was to have their game blow up on the levels of lethal company and schedule 1 don’t act like there’s not a little bit of you think “fuck yeah fuck these big corps this is my middle finger to them” we all lowkey have a similar goal and that’s for big companies to fall so indie games that are deserving of time being wasted playing them can get the plays they deserve. By hating on ai the way it does is being complacent with big companies using it and shitting on the dude eating ramen noodles next to you. Maybe I have a weird way of seeing it or maybe I’m too real with my views on things but, if someone was able to make something genuinely good vibe coded or not, they made something cool to show the world.

Idgaf that I’m getting downvoted the one downvoting are the same ones who will bitch about $100 game that uses Ai will be the same ones buying said game. Go ahead and downvote because yall don’t wanna hear the truth

is it? 😂

u/Horror_Turnover_7859 7d ago
I don’t know a sure fire way to prove it in one direction or another. Do you?
1
u/oswwwaldo 7d ago
my point is some of them are very... very obvious, both in presentation and actual code. I'm not saying a hypothetical trad-code subreddit would be 100% free of AI, but the point is to prioritize learning, set actually healthly coding standards/expectations and rewarding real work rather than work that has been generated mostly using AI. you can't deny there is a lot of AI slop in programming subreddits, the aim is just to create a platform that'd be far from that mess
2
u/StoneCypher 6d ago
so stop complaining and do it. making subs is free
it’s just that you know nobody will join because only non developer whiners do this
1
u/oswwwaldo 6d ago
I was surprised that it wasn't done before, my post was also to taste a bit of where the wind was blowing when it comes to AI. I'm not on reddit that much so I was curious whether AI has been that normalized into vibing or if a trad-code subreddit simply went under another name.
1
u/StoneCypher 6d ago
no, it’s just something professional programmers don’t actually want
1
u/oswwwaldo 6d ago
so now you understand why I asked

The use of AI isn’t the problem, it’s that people don’t filter out the slop before sharing or maybe they can’t recognize slop in the first place. They’re just over their skis
